Political leaders, in Oregon and in Congress, have taken notice. Many plan to introduce legislation, or launch programs, aimed at helping those hardest hit:
The governor's proposed budget, so far, includes money to replicate a previously successful job training program.
Oregon legislators will be urged to place a measure on the 2013 ballot asking voters to create a permanent state fund providing financial aid to college students.
New student loan options that recently took effect will lower some payments and provide more debt forgiveness.
A state agency will conduct a limited test of a program to buy back and refinance underwater mortgages. The slide began in December 2007 -- yep, it's been five years -- and the recession's stranglehold was complete by the next fall. Programs like these are actually rare in Washington State, due to the initiative process and limitations on new taxes. There’s also a contingent of dems who are fiscally conservative. But WA has other problems (e.g. homo marriage).

By the way I liked the ID “Entropy” because it was one term I never clearly understood during my engineering college years. The 12 stands for the lowest golf handicap I achieved.
Oregonians are clueless. I remember in the 90s when Portland schools hired a committee of private sector CFOs to analyze the use of the latest tax levy increase that was supposed to fund new teachers. What they found was that NO NET NEW TEACHERS were hired and the money went entirely to existing teacher salaries. And yet the sheeple there just follow orders. Oregon will never change.
These days the Leftists want us into increasing debt until they think they can take over the country. The only problem is that when the communists/socialists take over they often purge (IE eliminate) the useful idiots.

The answer lies in my tagline.
The law of “supply and demand” does not apply to the educational industry, only how much they can charge based upon how much “free money” they can get from the government to pay for a “piss poor” education and have unlimited funds thanks to the government.
If the educational industry had to stand on it’s own two feet and operate like a standard business, college tuition would probably be about 1/10th of what it is today.

However, we can all plan 4 years in the future when it comes to our enslavement by the communists.
How about a simple ‘Plan B’?
That is, states attack the higher education bubble to make a college education more affordable. How do they do this?
1) Assert that the purpose of subsidized education is so that graduates will be able to get better jobs benefiting all the people in the state.
2) Compare majors offered by state universities to job placement of graduates of those majors *in their field* within six months after graduation. If a major does not result in a job placement in that field, it no longer should be subsidized by the state government.
3) Curricula are currently “puffed” with “elective” subjects not associated with job performance after graduation. Thus the vast majority of these elective subjects should also not be subsidized, nor required for graduation.
4) Any courses not subsidized that students are willing to pay for out of pocket should continue to exist, but there should be strict limits on the use of student loans to pay for them.
In that doing these four things would reduce both the cost to the state and the expense to students by perhaps half the amount currently paid by both for a college education, they should be implemented first, before any alternative scheme in the context of the current higher education bubble is considered.
