Senators have doubts about universal background checks for gun transfers
Washington Times ^ | March 31, 2013 | David Sherfinski

Posted on 04/02/2013 4:41:18 PM PDT by neverdem

Senators from both parties signaled Sunday that universal background checks could be the next gun measure to get shoved toward the legislative scrap heap or significantly watered down.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, whose bill to expand background checks to cover virtually all gun transactions, including private sales, has cleared the Judiciary Committee, said he is nevertheless hunting for a compromise on the issue.

“I’m working very hard with both Democrats and Republicans, pro-NRA and anti-NRA people, to come up with a background check bill that will be acceptable to 60 senators and be very strong and get the job done,” the New York Democrat said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “It’s very hard. We’re working hard, and I’m very hopeful that we can get this passed.”

Two Republican senators who are backing legislation to clarify the definition of people adjudicated mentally ill who are not allowed to own or purchase guns appeared skeptical that Mr. Schumer’s measure could pass the Senate as written.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona called universal checks “a bridge too far for most of us.”

“Well, the paperwork requirements alone would be significant, and even if there are exemptions for a father passing on a gun to his son or daughter, you’d still have issues with people in a private setting transferring or loaning a gun for somebody,” Mr. Flake said later on the program.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that out of about 80,000 people who failed background checks last year, just 66 were prosecuted.

“Why in the world would you expand that system if you’re not enforcing the law that exists today to include private transfers?” Mr. Graham said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “So I think that legislation is going nowhere...”

The bills which the states are passing, are 10-50x worse than SlimeSwine-Scummer’s ‘compromise’ bill ever would be. NY, CT, MD, CO etc are doing all the heavy-lifting for the gun-grabber cabal.

Here it is. From As Views Shift on Guns, Reid Corrals Senate, this post:

"Was listening to Rush on the way home from work when he took an obscene profits timeout. What followed was a commercial with some guy talking about how he hunts and has taught his kids to hunt blah blah blah. He ended by saying he supports the 2A but to keep guns out of the hands of criminals or mental deficients we need to have expanded background checks. Then he said he was Dan Coats, Senator from Indiana and call his number to show support for enhanced background checks.

"Another RINO who will vote in Reid/ Obama camp

Oh...the "why" makes an interesting additional q & a...

May that never happen here.

I didn't even realize that I changed the 'when' to 'why.'
Makes more sense that way doesn't it? lol

Yes, it does, really added an extra dimension to the thought!

I was thinking, “Yeah, WHY?” As in, “Hey, YEAH! We have a CHOICE in this! Why on earth would we allow it?!”

Thanks for your posts. “Democide” had the desired effect in me. I haven’t been able to watch it since viewing it several times when it first came out, though, it’s that chilling.

I have several guns that were purchased anywhere from 1890 to 1957. Somehow, I seem to have misplaced the bills of sale. Under some scenarios, I would have to declare these before I could ever sell them. This could then become a requirement for registration without ever a sale.

They are relying on the “interstate commerce clause” as justification for universal background checks. Tell me this; how does one private citizen selling a gun to another private citizen within a state constitute “interstate commerce”?

We can’t count on the NY RNC to field a candidate that will beat him. He needs to go. If he can’t be impeached or beaten in an election we need to find another way. Schumer is dangerous for this country.

He is upset that Obama didn't move faster to get something passed.

Didn't move fast enough?

Damn, he was on TV nationwide in about 5 hours flat.

It doesn't get any faster than that.

They are mad that Obama had Biden do that study rather than he demand an immediate bill get written and passed as polls surge with these shootings then they drop again as viewers lose interest.

Not saying their expectations are realistic.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WHERE TO HIDE YOUR GUNS AND AMMO SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT START CONFISCATION?

THINK “FARADAY SHIELD” OR IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND A PLACE THAT THE CHANCE OF A SEARCH OF MY HOUSE AND PROPERTY -AND- WOULD NOT SHOW UP MY HIDDEN WEAPONS OR COULD BE DETECTED BY METAL DETECTORS.

I FOUND MY PLACE. YOU SHOULD PUT SOME THOUGHT INTO WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO.

Yeah, little bammy still has that bad habit of not yet being a total dictator and ordering Congress on how to "vote."

Soros and Jarrett will are not pleased but can not demand much more from him as the donks are already fed up with him.

Wait till he flunks Amnesty 101, he will have the illegals mad at him too!
