Ebert, 70, who reviewed movies for the Chicago Sun-Times for 46 years and on TV for 31 years, and who was without question the nation’s most prominent and influential film critic, died Thursday in Chicago. I never watched his show; But I was on tour with a band, stuck in a motel room, and a couple of guys turned on the TV and hollered, SISK AND EEB!

So I got stuck watching it. Don't even remember what movies they talked about.

“We have a long standing tradition. On obituary threads, unless the person was an absolute MONSTER (Like Ted Kennedy) we either say something nice, or if we cannot do that, we remain silent”

I think that ended on the Teddy Kennedy grease fire thread.

Only slightly off topic...These type of headlines are a pet peeve of mine. The word "dies" is a verb. A word that describes an action. Someone who is dead is not capable of action. The word "dead" is descriptive, an adjective.

"So and So, dead at 70" is the proper term.

"So and so dies at 70" is not improper. It's an example of the "historical present" tense, which is often used in headlines (and other situations - "A man walks into a bar . . ." is one example).

In our city, there was an abortionist who killed babies for more than 40 years, paid off the sheriff so the police would leave him alone before Roe v Wade, and even told a woman who had just aborted her baby, “Would you like to see your son now?” He died a few years ago of brain cancer. He was in a lot of pain. I know we are not supposed to be judgmental, but I felt he got just what he deserved. And besides, God gave him the cancer. I didn’t.

What I should have said was.....

How do you know he's in a better place?......Where do you think he's residing?

True, but where he is now is still an improvement (a bit hotter, though)...

I can't wait to see his reaction when he realizes Hell is just one long Adam Sandler Film Festival.

“The English Patient” is interesting in that the novel it’s based on was considered unfilmable, and they pulled it off.
Not everyone agrees ...

How is he in a better place now?

Well...what I meant to type was that he may be in a better place...or a worse place. Either way I'm sure his first few moments put a surprised look on his countenance...given his views on religion and the afterlife.

Would...."A dead man man walks into a bar" make much sense?

So you hated Schindler’s List, Citizen Kane and loved Tommy Boy and Pauly Shore films?

Tommy Boy was a classic - the pinnacle of Chris Farley's career!

Citizen Kane and Schindler's List pretty good too. But anything with Pauly Shore - or Tom Green - is a must miss!

Saw the Seven Samarai but liked Clint Eastwood's/Sergio Leone's version better.

The second I saw this I knew you have no idea what you are talking about.

The Seven Samurai was never remade by Sergio Leone. Yojimbo was, as Fistful of Dollars with Eastwood and again as Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis (directed by Walter Hill).

Samurai was remade as The Magnificent Seven, directed by John Sturges.

I may not have agreed with Roger on every film (he liked Popeye, a film I despise) and I could not care less about his politics. But you won't be catching me trying to give one the impression I know anything about movies when in fact I am quite ignorant and have no taste.
