A few more details have been released about the apparent suicide of Matthew Warren, the 27-year-old son of Pastor Rick Warren, the popular evangelical leader of the Saddleback Valley Community mega-church in Southern California.
The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner's Department has announced Matthew Warren was found dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his home in Mission Viejo, Calif.
The 59-year-old pastor is the author of "The Purpose Driven Life," which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, the church's website says --- making the book the bestselling hardback non-fiction book of all time and the second most-translated book in the world, after the Bible.

From what I’ve read, he suffrered with depression most of his life, even when he was a boy.
Sounded like they tried about everything to help him.
Very scary times, indeed.
MY SIL’s family has attended this congregation.
What you ask is 100% reasonable. I agree with with you. But heartless Mofo you aint. The truth is a beautiful thing.
God walks us out onto a plank and says jump.
We do not understand His purpose...
He demands our obedience... not our comprehension of his purpose for us.
I suggest a reading of Oswald Chambers to cleanse the palate of those who suggest we serve His purpose.
We did Purpose Driven LIfe study here in our home with a group of neighbors. It was through that study that our friend came to know The Lord.
I don’t argue with PDL...since then Warren has gone off the edge in dodging sin as sin....
But I really don’t think this is the thread to go theological.
For now, I sincerely pray for this distraught family and pray that God will use it somehow to His Glory...
Depression is messed up brain chemistry. The kid, his family—nobody would wish it upon anybody else.
People commit suicide from this condition. Medicine can treat, but cannot cure it.
My sister has sufferd from depression all her adult life. She does not drink, use drugs ever, at all.
When they get the prescription right, she is okay most of the time. But from time to time, the condition goes into a phase which must just be endured, waited out.
It is times like that when they cannot take it any longer, and off themselves. (NO, I don’t “approve” but I accept)
It has nothing to do with satan, or that ignorant line of nonsense.
Let's hang tough! Your friend.
Very sad situation. So terrible.
I so understand. I have a nephew and grandson both with it.
It is the most difficult illness to understand.
- His faith in Jesus wasn't strong enough and he didn't pray often enough.
- He was taking SSRIs, the tools of Satan, and it's a miracle he didn't kill his entire family.
- He was taking SNRIs, a scheme of Big Pharma to kill us all and take all our money.
- His family and friends should have seen the signs, and thus prevented it. They must not care about him.
- His family should have committed him to a mental hospital, and if that didn't help, put him in a straight-jacket and lock him in the basement.
- He wasn't loved as a child.
- He was loved too much as a child and was probably sick of being smothered.
- He was probably a liberal and wanted to help the gun-control freaks.
- I heard he was a freakin' fag. No wonder he offed himself. Good riddance.
- Oh, dear. Bless his heart. Well, I'll pray for his family but it's too late for him because he's burning in a lake of fire and brimstone.
- He wasn't sanctified, poor man, or else he would have been healed.
- His father strayed away from God, so this was his father's punishment.
What did I leave out?
I have to disagree. Not in all cases because humans are very different. Some struggle with depression and mental illness for years. They just cannot cope. My hubby and I use to help and volunteer to help run away young teens. It can be very complex at times. Nothing will reach some. I think it's a wrong decision to do but some people you cannot reach before it's too late. Though, some cases will choose this for attention making it spiral to a situation they cannot/will not control. I always wonder why they don't love themselves since we all are special temple of God though I realize we are all different. Sad way to end one's life by their own hand.
“We do not understand His purpose..”
Some people understand His purpose.
As more and more news outlets report the tragic death of Pastor Rick Warrens son, its clear that no one knows anything beyond what Warren revealed in an email to staff announcing the suicide. Were certain that even Warren, who wrote that son Matthew decided to take his own life in spite of Americas best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, is asking why such a tragedy had to happen. While some are simply asking the questions that anyone might ask, many ghouls are laying blame at the feet of Warren himself.
Blogger Sooper Mexican did his best to compile some of the most offensive remarks before they were deleted, but sadly, we dont imagine there will be a shortage of new ones any time soon as long as Christians are involved.
Purpose driven projectile. Tragic.
May he RIP and may his family be consoled by their Christian beliefs.
Interesting perspective. Mine is somewhat different. Here’s what I just posted on another thread (I’m repeating myself.) We were discussing slow suicide, that is wholly approved by the yawning, indifferent society (listen to Eleanor Rigby, which explains it sufficiently well), versus a quick suicide. Here’s my famous quote:
Those who do it the quick method dont deserve our condemnation. It is not they who are selfish (as if the dead could be selfish!), it is we, poor things (selfish), who blame the suicides for hurting our precious feelings, when it was ultimately we who failed them!
