A distraught mother came to News 4 after her 20-year-old daughter was fired after missing work for training duties with the Missouri National Guard.

Morgan Johnson was sworn in to the Missouri National Guard on April 18 and told her boss at the Crystal City Subway she would miss work to train with her unit that next weekend.

She was fired the following Monday even though a federal law protects her from losing her job over military service.

Let’s see now. She was sworn in on the 18th of this month and this weekend she’ll be performing her National Guard training?

A 20-year-old’s contribution to the state’s NG is negligible. The time frame here would indicate that she really doesn’t give a damn about her submarine sandwich making job.

her “distraught” mother contacted the news? I have experience about what makes someone “distraught” . Waaaa.

Maybe this warrior should have chosen ... wisely....
between serving her country and serving subs, signing on with an employer that requires weekend shift work that someone else has to cover. But no, we want our “rights” and we want it all, and you owe me.

Or Ima get all “distraught” about my victimhood.

When I joined the military I quit my menial job(s) so someone else could handle it. Whatta dumshit, maybe I should go back and demand they reinstate me.

Ask not what your country owes you

How many people here mocked Kerry or Gore for their service?

“I just bet she “told her boss” and didn’t “ask her boss” to rearrange the work schedule”

Guess what, stupid, she doesn’t “ask” when it comes to orders the military gives her to show. “Sorry, my boss says you military guys must rearrange your schedule. I have to work that evening.”

This is why we had to make a law that protects people that receive orders to serve; to protect them from morons like you that think a boss is a god of sorts.

Can’t defend your post, so you come back and choose one poster to puff your chest at and throw gorilla dust to?

The law says, “Your job must give you time off for drill.”
Period.
And instead of going, “Oh, okay.” you come back with this lame post.

Thanks for letting us know.
Hey gang, check out post 22 for all you need to know about silverleaf.

“Maybe you can move up the ladder and get her job”

Oh, come on, we all know he’s the temporary associate assistant weekend shift supervisor at Subway.

“When I joined the military I “

I call bullsh*t. If you were ever in the military then you know you don’t “ask” a civilian if you can go when ordered.

“How many people here mocked Kerry or Gore for their service?”

We didn’t mocked their service, we mocked them and how they conducted their service; from Gore that was never allowed to do the dangerous missions others were asked to do because his daddy was a Senator to Kerry that lied to get medals and then dishonorably threw them away, not to mention Kerry got a formal reprimand from the Navy.

Why? Actually being in VietNam, is not as patriotic as being in the NG?

Uh, Kerry LIED his butt off to get medals.
Al Gore didn’t do sheepdip besides have a bodyguard.
He shirked duty because he was a senators son.
That’s why.
If you’re going to claim it, actually BE it.

Not knowing the law isn’t an excuse for breaking it.

Back around 1978, my stamping plant in Detroit sold off its wheel and brake division, laying off several hundred employees. Most of them had low seniority so they had recall rights of 3 years. Meaning, they remained on layoff status until the 3 years expired then they were terminated.

One of those employees subsequently joined the Army for 4 years. Following his discharge, he returned to the plant to try and start work again. Since his job no longer existed and his 3 year recall rights had expired, we had no choice but to tell him he had been terminated. Technically we were correct because that was the language in the UAW contract and the plant UAW bargaining committee agreed with us.

Well, he appealed it to I don’t remember who but ultimately it ended up in the hands of an Arbitrator who ruled that the company was wrong in terminating him and ordered us to reinstate him to layoff status and recommence the 3 year recall right clause effective with his date of military discharge.

He was then able to sign up for the “layoff pool” and was placed in another department when an opening became available.

This was a very unusual case because the law ultimately superseded the company’s bargaining agreement and granted this guy super seniority over everyone else he got laid off with who ultimately were terminated.

Ironically enough, the guy was fired within four months for excessive absenteeism. (Knowing the guy's employment record before he got laid off, I knew that was coming...)

If I had a business there, I’d hire her in a minute. Subway needs to fire that boss immediately.

I bet once this story aired that young girl was bombarded with job offers.

Many employers would and SHOULD embrace someone that signed up to defend this country. I think this girl will end up with a better job although there’s nothing wrong with working fast food.

Again, that’s not how it works.
You swear in and if the unit you are assigned to has their next drill tomorrow, you’d better darn well be there.
Even if you’re in civvies, they will expect you there.
The boss is in the wrong.

Subway seriously needs to shake-up it’s Marketing Department.

First the foot-long fiasco and now this.

I’ve just decided there are other places I can buy my lunch when I’m out and about.

You are correct, I did not watch the video at the time I posted the comments. I did base my perceptions on the written article.

However, after reviewing the video, there is NOTHING in the video that does away with the possibility of ignorance on the part of the manager.
