Officials in Belize say a construction company has destroyed one of the country's largest Mayan pyramids, reports.

Head of the Belizean Institute of Archaeology Jaime Awe said the Noh Mul temple was leveled by a road-building company seeking gravel for road filler.

I believe what you’re seeing is the remnants of the pyramid after it was destroyed. It’s a shame because these pyramids are magnificent. Belize is open about letting travelers explore them. Probably will start locking them down now, like everywhere else.

Was the name of the owner of the company obama by any chance?

No, but he is a politician.

"The heavy equipment responsible for the damage was labeled “D-Mar Construction,” a company owned by a local politician Denny Grijalva.

I keep hearing lots of commercials about
"Retire to Belize!"
Cheap and Good Life in Tropical Paradise!"
"Friendly, Colorful, Quaint Natives!"

Well before you go, FRiends, know that this place is inhabited by the meanest bunch of shiftless assholes in the whole Caribbean. They, especially their utes, are indolent, violent druggies, who make Jamaicans look like industrial dynamos.

Besides a hopelessly corrupt government and venal petty officials, they have a really bad attitude after listening to years of commieprop from Cuba (in English or their idea of it). This country should be re-colonized immediately ... which I assure you the CHICOM are working on.

Belize? Think Detroit with Palm Trees.

I’ve been to the Mayan pyramids in Yucatan. They are larger and higher. They are still intact. Some may not be and are more crumbling. This photo has full overgrowth on top and its not that high.

There’s no before and after for this. I looked to see if there were any photos of this pyramid, but there doesn’t seem to be.

Not that I’m saying they ought to have removed gravel from even what is more akin to ruins of a Mayan structure.

I suggest looking on the good side......

Now we know, all of us, even those of us here on Free Republic, what’s on the inside of a Mayan Pyramid.

Sounds like you’ve been there, I have seen thugs follow building materials to a construction site and threaten the contractor / owner if they don’t get paid to unload the truck, or else NO one unloads the truck.
Its a nightmare trying to work there...

With few exceptions, the Caribbean is truly a sewer

Tourist Council of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has the rotten luck to be in a very bad neighborhood, stuck between the Scroto-Publics of Nicaragua and Panama. Can you spell "Border Problems?"

However, of all the rag-tag and bobtail outfits in Central America it is the most like a for-real country. Can't last!

If they had sewers in Belize, they wouldn't work.

Yeah, imagine people who have an abundance of ruins, temples, green stuff, etc. but not an abundance of $, opportunity, etc --suddenly see opportunity for those things and they don't really have a concern for saving the ruins, temples, etc.

That's why environmentalism is a cause for wealthy nations. Or preserving ruins, rainforests, etc. etc.

This is a good argument for turning historical sites into tourist traps. When they just sit there with nobody but the occasional archeologist people that don’t know what they are do dumb things. As a tourist trap it would have a fence and a gate and a bunch of people taking pictures and buying t-shirts.

Please do not bother me with negative posts about Belize.

I am frightfully busy with my IRS-Certified 501-C3, "Hoodies for Belizeans," which is equipping Belizean Utes with warm fleece-lined "Trayvon Hoodies"(copyright)and airline tickets to come to Chicago to study Flash Mob Dynamics.

Our POTUS has said that if he weren't gay, Belizean thugs could be his sons and daughters. At any rate, I has seed the error of my ways and is doing my best to assure that the reputation of the friendly, quaint, and darn colorful natives of Belize is not blackened by exaggerated press reports.

In more upbeat news, 6 of 10 tourists from the US in Belize report that they were not mugged, assaulted, raped, or robbed within their first 24 hours in Belize. A search is presently underway for tourists who survived their first 36 hours.
