The Bright Side of Amnesty
American Thinker ^ | June 18, 2013 | Selwyn Duke

Saying there's a bright side to amnesty may seem much like talk of the advantages of malignant cancer. But this won't be a pie-in-the-sky article about the "economic benefits" of new workers, expanding the tax base or the wonders of "diversity." There is no Ayotte-Rubio flip-flop here; in fact, for those who don't know me, I've long called for a halt to even legal immigration. And understanding why is necessary to put amnesty's "bright side" in perspective.

It is an inconvenient and ignored truth that the main problems posed by illegal migration are essentially the same problems of legal immigration. Are you concerned about an influx of low-skilled workers driving down wages and competing with native Americans? Legal immigration also floods the nation with low-skilled workers. Do you worry that amnesty will grow Democrat voter rolls? A vast majority of legal immigrants also vote Democrat. Most significantly, do you fret that millions of unassimilable foreigners with values contrary to Western ideals are transforming our culture into something distinctly non-Western? Legal immigrants are essentially of the same demographic, with 1965's Immigration Reform Act ensuring that 85 percent of them hail from the Third World and Asia...

--snip--

And along with the other ways that power is causing the left to stir the pot - the IRS abuses, ObamaCare, the anti-traditionalist rhetoric and violence - amnesty may help do just that. It may help wake people up to our descent into Third World autocracy.

It may also have an unintended by-product. What might that be? Well, there are those in our nation who've concluded that if you have a severely gangrenous limb, you don't entertain the fancy that the infection won't spread if you simply label necrotic tissue healthy.

You cut your losses.

This is what is fueling the secessionist movement...

The nativists said the same thing in the 19th and early 20th centuries about the waves of immigration by Irish, Italians, Poles, Russians and (especially) Jews. As the grandchild of four Eastern European Jewish immigrants, I happily welcome all legal immigrants to the U.S.

Legal immigration is based on Ted Kennedy’s idea of what it should be. It is based on what the courts interpret it as. Any chance to reform it would need a supermajority of conservatives.

“Our illegal population alone exceeds the all the Irish, Jewish and British immigrants who came. Each year, we catch more people breaking in at the border than all the Swedes and Norwegians who came to America in 200 years. Half a million illegal aliens succeed in breaking in every year, more than all the Greeks or Poles who came legally from the Revolution to 1960.”

The same could be said about the numbers of low wage immigrants that legally immigrate each decade.

Plenty of unskilled Somalians are legal immigrants. Obama’s Aunt is now a legal immigrant based on fear of persecution. Chain immigration means that people immigrate based on reunion. Only 10% of immigration is now based on skills.

The legal immigration process they had in the past was better. They actually reduced immigration at times to allow assimilation

This guy hits the nail on the head.

There should be NO immigration (illegal OR LEGAL) until we can get this monstosity under control, deport those that shouldn’t be here, then get in place a sane policy to allows in only small numbers of people really needed here, not every welfare prospect and jihadist who wants to come here.

The problem isn’t immigration. It is TYRANNY. “Fixing immigration” is like getting a new car cuz the plumbing leaks...

Back during LBJ's presidency Congress eliminated national origin immigration quotas. That was where any new immigration was to reflect the existing body of people in the US according to ethnic group.

The substitute never really worked out all that well. The addition of 'family reunification' to the mix just made it worse.

However, the current legislation before the Senate is, in fact, a return to the old national origin system. Here a single nation, Mexico, will get 80% of the new immigration slots.

The rest of the world will share a mere 20%.

The idea is little different than the system that gave England x%, Germany y%, France z%, and so on.

There's an equity problem in this transformation ~ that is that Mexico was already a nation of immigration. People chose to go there. That they made a mistake is inescapable, but only in respect to the far better conditions in the United Staes. Still, Mexico is the 8th wealthiest nation on the planet and is well situated to improve the lot of its population. Those people are hardly hopeless, helpless, stateless refugees. They are all documented as citizens of Mexico.

The other 20% are a mixed bag. Some actually are refugees of a sort, but many are just rich people by their own nation's standards who came here on an expensive airplane ride from the other end of the world, and then overstayed their visas!

They are, in fact, TOURISTS. I have difficulty feeling sorry for them! Best bet is to make sure they get back home.

Show us the government documents in those languages. Today immigration has devolved into a discussion about hispancs and no one else. Tell us how they plan to assimilate if they aren’t required to do so.

Which welfare program did they get when they arrived? Did government conduct official business in their native tongue? Was muliticulturalism taught to them and their children as superior to Americanism?

The nativists were right. These immigrants became huge, reliable voting blocks for Marxist Democrats and began the transformatin of America from its roots in Western Civilization to Socialism.

Re: “I happily welcome all legal immigrants to the U.S.”

Let’s have this discussion again after they help Democrats tax away your property and seize your guns, after they compel you to entrust your health care to unionized government employees, after affirmative action immigrants take away the college and job openings that should have gone to your children, and after the Black-Hispanic-Asian majority refuses to pay your Social Security and Medicare.

Re: “As the grandchild of four Eastern European Jewish immigrants.”

Just saw the results of an Anti-Defamation League poll and analysis.....

42% of foreign born Hispanics are anti-Semites.

20% of American born Hispanics are anti-Semites.

Good luck to you and your family when those guys are the majority.

By the way, how long will Israel survive after American Conservatives lose all political power?

It took a century for the Irish to assimilate, because of their grievances. Less time for the Irish. And I would argue that most American Jews have never assimilated to Ameirca. They "assimilated" to an urban counter-culture at war with America. No one who votes for the parties of socialism and cultural Marxism are assimilated.
