A Modest Proposal to Bomb Both Sides in Syria
The Nation ^ | September 5, 2013 | Jon Wiener

Posted on 09/08/2013 12:42:42 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

The dilemma: how can we punish Assad for his violations of international law, when his opponents are also in violation—in this case, killing prisoners?

The Times called this a "foreign policy puzzle." But there’s a solution to this puzzle. Some have suggested the solution is: don’t bomb Assad. Those people are spineless and unprincipled. The obvious solution is simple: bomb both sides.

The principles enunciated by President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry are clear and uplifting: it’s our job to punish evildoers. It’s our job to send a message, so that others will not follow the example of evildoing. Those who oppose sending a message will be responsible for whatever evil follows.

Kerry made it clear that those who refuse to support American intervention against Assad will be responsible the next time the Syrian regime "gasses its citizens" -- and they will also be responsible "when North Korea or Iran attempts to use nuclear weapons." But of course the same argument applies to the other side: those against bombing the opposition with also be personally responsible if Iran attacks Israel with nuclear weapons...

As the president has said, “Assad must go.” Now we need to add, “And the opposition must go.” Who then should govern Syria? Again, the answer is simple: the United States of America.

Are some of these people the same ones who would criticize us for trying to be the world’s policeman, if the target was communist, or Al Qaeda?

I have a better and much more effective solution.....Impeach Obama!!! This incompetent, failed POTUS created this entire Middle East mess, from day one of his term as POTUS!!! Remove him, Obama, Biden and all their Obamabot failures!!! We need a POTUS that will lead...not lie!!! This evil human being, Obama, will gladly put American military folks in harm’s way to protect his butt and inflated ego!!! Impeach him....or send him, Obama, Biden and Kerry to Syria to care of Assad....rather then our precious military personnel!!! End of Story!!!

Rule One in politics: when your enemy is in the process of destroying himself, don’t intervene.

Rule Two is then equally clear: if you’re getting advice from The Nation, don’t accept it.

There are many flaws in Jon Wiener’s piece, but the key one is the conclusion. Acknowledging that by attacking one side in a civil war, you support the other, so in this case we would have to hit both, he leaves us in the position of having to rule the country ourselves after defeating both sides.

And everyone knows why we mustn’t do that.

Just don’t take the advice of The Nation. No matter how sensible some of the points are, when they add them all up to a final conclusion, it’s not going to be a good one.

I want someone in the media to ask this question of Obama:

"Mr. Obama, who are the Syrian Rebels? What groups make up these rebels?"

When Obama refuses to respond, tell him:

"The Syrian Rebels are made up of the muslim brotherhood, and al-Qaeda, sponsored and recruited by the muslim brotherhood to fight Bashir al-Assad. Mr. Obama - are you seriously proposing to arm al-Qaeda in Syria to fight against Bashir al-Assad?"

Because that's the reality: Obama wants to arm al-Qaeda in Syria to fight Assad. al-Qaeda is a declared ENEMY of the United States of America and is in fact, on the United States Terrorist Group list. Their leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri is on the United States Most Wanted List.

Therefore, Obama is actively an ACT OF TREASON against the People of the United States of America by ARMING, TRAINING and SUPPORTING the very terrorist organization that killed almost 3,000 people on Sept. 11th, 2001.

Why in the HELL isn't this Congress drafting up Articles of Impeachment against Obama at this very moment for TREASON against the United States of America?

Obama thinks Snowden's a traitor? Seriously, LOOK IN THE MIRROR Obama! You're Traitor #1.

Another idiot aptly named Weiner. What in the world would we do with Syria? No assets and all trouble. Take over Saudi Arabia - I could go with that one. Push the House of Saud into the desert where they belong and take over the oil fields. As far as Syria is concerned we have every strategic interest in keeping them fighting as long as possible to exhaust whoever is the winner or quarantining it and letting it burn itself out.

Kerry et al keep bragging that we will put no boots on the ground. Actually, they already have boots on the ground, and those boots are Al Qaeda. Which means, if you topple Assad, Al Qaeda and the Brothers inherit the chemical weapons this action is supposed to be about.

If you seriously want to change the equation (and protect the world from Assad’s chemical weapons) you have to do what Bush did in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is to commit to boots on the ground for a decade. Fight the guerrilla war that is guaranteed to happen to keep the Brothers and the old Baathists from taking power in the aftermath, hold new elections, and defend the new government until they are able to defend themselves.

If you aren’t prepared to do that, then this is guaranteed to hand Syria over to the jihadists, and probably sink Syria into another worse civil war.

So, either American boots for a decade, or stay out.

The obvious solution is simple: bomb both sides.

Even more obvious: let them sort it out themselves.

They will never accept a solution imposed by outsiders, anyway. They will just unite long enough to rid themselves of the interlopers.

I do not understand why I do not yet hear other Conservatives or Constitutionalists asking this same question: Why isn't Congress IMPEACHING and REMOVING Barack Hussein Obama from office for committing an act of TREASON by backing al-Qaeda in Syria?

HELLOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

The oil speculators at the root of all this are in a big hurry to map out Syria. Whatever it takes, regime chance, invasion, they will not wait.

“The oil speculators at the root of all this are in a big hurry to map out Syria. Whatever it takes, regime chance, invasion, they will not wait.”

Actually, no. Speculators even out the cost to producers. Without them, the price would be all over the map.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait want to build a pipeline through Jordan and Syria. But Assad said no. Without that pipeline all those countries will eventually become vassals of Iran when Iran goes nuclear. That’s because once they go nuclear they can do whatever the heck they want to the Straits of Hormuz without fear from anybody. (Note. We don’t even know if North Korea has the bomb and they can sink warships with impunity. Still think Iran won’t set up a gate and keep raising the exit price on tankers?)

When oil and gas are involved, and Russia is dealt in, the proper word is hegemony.

Much of Europe gets its natural gas from Russia. It is in Russia's national interest to keep it that way.
