On Jan. 16, Jagjeet Singh, 49, a long-haul truck driver from California on his way to pick up chickens for delivery in Texas, was pulled over for driving with a flat tire in Pike County, Miss.
Officers at a weigh station operated by the Department of Transportation demanded that Singh turn over his "kirpan," a 3-inch ceremonial blade carried by all Sikh men and frequently sewed into the waistband of their trousers, according to the ACLU.
"Contending, wrongly, that his kirpan was illegal, the DOT officer demanded that Mr. Singh turn it over. Mr. Singh tried to explain that he was a Sikh and that the kirpan was a sacred religious article," the ACLU wrote in a letter of complaint to the DOT. "In response, however, the officer laughed at him and mocked his religious beliefs.
"One officer declared that all Sikhs are depraved and 'terrorists,'" the ACLU said in its letter. DOT officers then arrested Singh for "refusing to obey a command" when he would not turn over his kirpan to police, according to the ACLU.

Singh appeared in court on March 26, when, his lawyers said, he was further demeaned by Pike County Judge Aubrey Rimes.
"Court officers told him he had to leave because he was wearing a turban and the judge wanted it removed. He was intimidated and horrified," said the ACLU's Atwood.
Rimes allegedly called Singh's turban "that rag" and insisted he remove it or his case would be called last on the docket after everyone else in the courtroom had left. Singh refused to remove the turban and was called last.
According to the ACLU, Singh pleaded guilty to the charge of refusing to obey a command and paid a fine.

Of course, I have already been warned that I had better not attempt to open-carry, given some previously mentioned beliefs of the necessity of any "License". At least I get the staff and blade back usually. Sometimes just the staff though, I should mention.
You dwell in self-delusion if you believe the American judicial system works under the authority of divinity. A laughable delusion, in light of recent and past judgments coming out of the said system. There either is perfect justice, or isn’t. Your earlier post incorporates loopholes to exonerate the courts of their monumental failings, made possible only by thinking not unlike yours, that human-built institutions can somehow be fully trusted because of their supposed (imagined / hallucinated) ties to your flavour of divinity.
We should stand behind the 6 year old and the Sikh. They did no wrong.
What honour when there is no respect (for the judge or his judgments)? And if so, why the courtesies, when they are merely lies? Why support the hypocrisy?
Let no man bow before another man.
If only King George III used judges and the Founders had rolled over like lap-dogs to their "authority", the Union Jack would still be flying over America.
Until enough of us have had enough and remove ourselves from the tyrannical despots currently holding the power of life or death over us as our founders did so many years ago, we have no choice in the matter.
The judge lies when he addresses Me as "Sir", and refers to Me as a "person" in his rulings and notes. I, in turn, lie to him and call him one of "Honor". The formalities are observed, and we each go on our way. Show Me a place where I am no longer forced to abide by illegal mandates, rulings, and false law and gladly will I abide there. Until then;
"Render to Caesar what is Caesars."
They probably don't have eight feet of hair underneath their headgear.
The law was just being an ass. I think Sikhs are pretty good patriotic Americans.
Agreed. However, kind of having to put up with an idiot for a Zero in charge when you are in the military, unless you have total pelosi of the brain you learn that they have all the options and you have none. Suck it up or spend the rest of your days suffering.
I should note; of all the filthy, disgusting, menial, totally beneath My intelligence, dangerous and wasteful drains on My life of jobs I have ever had to do...
By far the WORST ones were in the military.
Typing too fast.
I understand your point, but there is something about perpetuating reinforcing behaviours, where the lack of opposition due to timid obedience perpetuates the problem.
Had the Founders not broken commandment and persisted in “render(ing) unto (their) Caesar” his due, there would be no America, today.
I should add to My previous post that along with Sikhs I spent a lot of time in the Philippines and for the most part they are a hardworking, godfearing, highly religious peoples whom I have been blessed to know. Most of the ones that decided to live in the USA are wonderful people -but I also know of several Filipino gangs that operate out of several communities. Just because most are good does not mean that there will be no arse'oles in them.
If the copper is being a complete Clymer; man up, play it how you have to until you can get out of the situation, and take off the helmet / ballcap / headscarf / whatever when told to do so. It's not a critical appendage for god'ssake, and it's not as if he's demanding you salute 'im. Remember at times to observe the necessities so you can laugh at him later.
"Bill Clinton, we have you surrounded!"
"Put down the cigar, step away from the intern..."
"-and come out, with your pants, UP!"
True, but there is a time and a place for all things.
It is most definitely NOT when surrounded by a gang all publicly flaunting their notorious gang colours, publicly displaying firearms and weapons not allowed to the general populace and unavailable legally to them, and wearing their traditional specific attire in a neighborhood under their control, as attempting to claim their actions are unreasonable and unjustified will only make them snort in contempt about you, who is not 'one of them'.
Even if that particular gang happens to be wearing badges and backup-summoning devices as well as claiming to be operating under the colour of law.
No.
I am saying the exact opposite.
The institution was established by God.
If one obeys the authority within that institution, one can enjoy the blessings of that institution, be they believers or unbelievers.
I have no doubt failure comes to anybody who attempts to substitute a counterfeit for what God provides.
It is far better to win with the Lord, than to win with an antichrist.
A quick check of your home page shows me what your problem is.....you live in the "People's Republic of California", and not the USA. Although I had thought that NCal was more conservative, I guess that doesn't apply to cops.
Actually, respect and etiquette are the reasons behind no headgear rules in courtrooms.
Exceptions are made though.
Removing head gear for identity purposes not necessary for Sikhs because they ALWAYS wear the head gear.
Would judges require a woman with turban from chemo treatments to remove hers? Most would not. It’s not necessary.
Religious exemptions are also made in courts all the time.
Jehova’s witnesses are not required to swear on the Bible are they?
I would love to hear the other side of this story though because the I never take the media’s word for anything.
This all does seem outrageous.
Probably the wisest sentiment on this thread. Check, check, double-check, re-check, and then still remain suspicious if "the media" is involved.
Maybe you might show some consideration to creatures created by God because God says so.
I don't think he was expecting people to change to the just like him. Why should he have to change to be just like them?
Old-school Freeperisms cluster detected.
Where I live at the moment is quite different from there for the most part, but some things are... 'understandably' different.
We do not have a City Police force here, we deal with Sheriff's Deputys instead. This is a very small town and if not outright neighbors then we know of each other (a lot of us, if not quite 80 percent) so things are generally dealt with on a semi-formal basis. We know the Deputies have to abide by the law, and they know that this is a very poor county and take that into consideration when they need to step in.
The CHiP(-pies) are still Clymers, since they answer to the state not the county, but even taking that into consideration life here is for the most part a far cry from what it is down in the Valley.
Granted, there are still some things I wish they would not focus so much on, but no place is perfect.
