Did Jesus have a crew-cut? Lifestyles of ancient Israel's rich and famous
Haaretz ^ | December 10, 2013 | Miriam Feinberg Vamosh

The city of Caesarea has been in the news recently, for the lavish lifestyle of certain contemporary residents. Yet the people of the seaside city also seem to have lived high on the hog in ancient history. Archaeologists have found surprisingly detailed records of sumptuous eating, drinking, dressing and housing customs of the wealthy – though it seems women only got to partake of the luxury within the home.

Rich then was like rich now – a matter of means. In a discussion on “who is rich” in the Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat (25b), Rabbi Meir simply said a truly wealthy person is satisfied with whatever he has. Unarguable, that. The famous Rabbi Akiva said wealth was having a pleasant wife (and he should know). But the more prosaic Rabbi Tarfon defined wealth as “100 vineyards, 100 fields and 100 servants.”

The practical Rabbi Yosi defined a rich person a “whoever has a toilet near his table.” At Sepphoris in the Galilee, archaeologists discovered just such a toilet near the dining hall of a wealthy Roman villa.

In fact the Jewish sages themselves were usually wealthy, which allowed them to ponder the fine points of Jewish law all day long....

I don’t recall Paul ever meeting Jesus? Did he?

Also, iirc, Jesus placed himself under the Nazarite Vow which, among other things, forbid the cutting of hair on head or face.

“Do the story of Samson ring a bell?”

Come on, do you really think it was his hair she cut?

“I am not one to delicately opine on fashion sense of the gentleman from Nazareth who ultimately was the cause of so many difficulties for the Jewish people.”

I believe that the people who persecuted Jews were deceived by the Father of Lies.

where in the world did you ever hear that? Because none of that is in the Bible, that’s for sure...

Genesis 6. Read it.

Paul said that long hair on a man is shameful.

Perhaps he persecuted Christians because of their hair.

I am not one to delicately opine on fashion sense of the gentleman from Nazareth who ultimately was the cause of so many difficulties for the Jewish people.

That sounds like those who blame conservatives for a rise in dissension due to them opposing liberals.

Or like atheists who absurdly blame the Bible for Hitler's and Stalin's atrocities (while absolving atheism for the atrocities of Godless Communism, with the political "religion" atheism can foster).

Jesus Christ was one of many Jewish prophets who caused difficulties for the Jewish people - who opposed their message of repentance, but the Christ went further, and thus met with the prophesied (Is. 53) antagonism. And which did bring Divine judgment, as it did in the past, and in which the heathen are often God's sword of chastisement. (Ps. 17:13).

But if you are making Jesus Christ to blame for Israel's suffering, then you are siding with the devil, who seeks the destruction of Israel, not its redemption, for which Christ died, and the apostle Paul was willing to be damned to achieve.

He met the post-crucifixion Jesus on the road to Damascus. He probably got a haircut by then.

genesis 6 says absolutely nothing about hair preventing women from demon posession, nor does it say anything about men with long hair being gay and angels posessing them for it 1 ¶ And it came to pass, when men <0120> began <02490> (8689) to multiply <07231> ( 8800) on <05921> the face <06440> of the earth <0127>, and daughters <01323> were born <03205> (8795) unto them, 2 That the sons <01121> of God <0430> saw <07200> (8799) the daughters <01323> of men <0120> that they <02007> were fair <02896>; and they took <03947> (8799) them wives <0802> of all which they chose <0977> (8804). 3 ¶ And the LORD <03068> said <0559> (8799), My spirit <07307> shall not always <05769> strive <01777> (8799) with man <0120>, for that he also <01571> (8677) <07683> (8800) is flesh <01320>: yet his days <03117> shall be an hundred <03967> and twenty <06242> years <08141>. 4 ¶ There were giants <05303> in the earth <0776> in those days <03117>; and also after <0310> that <03651>, when <0834> the sons <01121> of God <0430> came in < 0935> (8799) unto the daughters <01323> of men <0120>, and they bare <03205> (8804) children to them, the same <01992> became mighty men <01368> which were of old <05769>, men <0582> of renown <08034>. 5 And GOD <03068> saw <07200> (8799) that the wickedness <07451> of man <0120> was great <07227> in the earth <0776>, and that every imagination <03336> of the thoughts <04284> of his heart <03820> was only <07535> evil <07451> continually < 03117>.

to be an apostle, a person had to have been with Jesus and seen the risen savior

Paul would have at least seen Jesus during his ministry, but he SURELY met the risen savior on the damascus road

A woman should cover her head because of the fallen angels. In Genesis 6 we learn that the fallen angels found the daughters of Adam attractive and impregnated them. A woman can avoid this by covering her head with, not her hair, but with the knowledge of Jesus, to know to stay away from the fallen angels. For a man to have to cover his head to protect himself from the fallen angels means he is homosexual and the fallen angels find him attractive because of his ways.

Genesis 6. Read it.

That is simply an absurd interpretation of 1Cor. 11, even if Tertullian (who fell into the heresy of Montanism) at least partly held to it, which highly metaphorical manner of interpretation of practical teaching foster Gnosticism.

Paul is not engaging in story telling, or metaphorically applying Gn. 6, to the situation, but is literally teaching the need for a head covering, with "because of the angels" referring to angelical beings covering themselves in humble modestly before God, (Is. 6:1,2) and likewise Paul teaches that "women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness," (1Tim. 2:9)

Secondarily it could refer to angels recording all that occurs in the service, as they behold what we do (1Cor. 4:9;) and would be shocked by lack of covering which they engage in before their head.

You can argue about what this head covering literally was, hair or a veil, but Paul was not talking about keeping evil angels from lusting after shapely women. The issue here is signifying submission to headship, not lust.

No, it sounds like a Jewish person trying to be polite to his fellow Freepers who happen to be Christians in a theological discussion I was pinged to, and would not join otherwise, as Orthodox Jewish people have a profoundly different view regarding the Nazarine than you.

Would you please point to the scripture that teaches that?

I’ve wondered if a young (20ish) Paul was in Jerusalem when Jesus was crucified. Yes, Paul met Jesus on the Damascus road, but IMHO it was not Paul of Tarsus’ first encounter with the Carpenter of Nazareth.

Guess we’ll find out later.

Nazarite-no, Nazarene-yes. Otherwise there would not have been wine passed out at the Last Supper and I doubt if Jesus would have been making wine for a wedding if he was a Nazarite. Where did you get the “Jesus under the Nazarite” vow thing?
