The Congressman Who Went Off the Grid
politico ^ | Jan 3, 2014 | JASON KOEBLER

When Roscoe Bartlett was in Congress, he latched onto a particularly apocalyptic issue, one almost no one else ever seemed to talk about: America’s dangerously vulnerable power grid. In speech after late-night speech on the House floor, Bartlett hectored the nearly empty chamber: If the United States doesn’t do something to protect the grid, and soon, a terrorist or an act of nature will put an end to life as we know it.

What would EMP do to those nice solar panels?

Fry them, and anything else using solid state devices ("chips") to a crisp. This would include all methods of power transmission and voice and other types of communication and virtually all methods of transportation.

Even a lite EMP could devastate the country for six months at least. Imagine having no electric power for anthing. Think about what you'd lose for a few minutes and you'll realize the amount of havoc that would be wreaked.

Farnsworth in number seven above recommended the book "One Second After. Excellent!! Here's a link.

One good effect: an EMP would put the NSA out of business for a long time.

Well, I hope that somebody wipes off the table after they take those chairs down — the feet of the chairs on the table surface is highly unsanitary. He may be off the grid, but germs lurk on the floor. His family may have enough food and home generated electricy, but they’ll die of some disease if he does not improve his housekeeping standards! LOL

He’s smart. Thats what we are doing to the mountain retreat. We are going to keep the electric hooked up until the grid goes down then flip the switch and go on solar. All appliances on propane and 2 1000 gallon propane tanks. Wood stove for heat. The solar will run the ceiling fans in the summer. Might get a little sticky but you can acclimate.

thats a good idea, but meds have a shelf life. Do you do a rotation of some kind?

Roscoe Bartlett for President

This guy is a real American

Self sufficient, hard working, always on the move accomplishing things

Compare him to the worthless drug thug we have running his gangsta extortion games on the American public

Indeed I do. But most meds have a shelf life of much longer than the manufacturers recommendations.

Keep them in the fridge. The shelf life can be extended by an amazing amount if you keep it barely above freezing.

I do not recommend freezing most meds (especially not the liquid ones) since some will turn to powder as trace amounts of moisture in them will eventually destroy them, if not simply disintegrating some particular ones with certain compounds necessary for their proper useage.

Fridge also works quite well for battery shelf life, with the same caveats about not freezing them.

Keep your meds in a dark area away from UV rays. Cool temperatures will keep most meds for 10 or more years.

I know nothing about this gentleman's *off-the-grid* situation. From the few pix I found ....I wouldn't call having propane lights necessarily *off-the-grid* ...b/c *someone* has to come by and fill the propane tank in the yard.

To me, what *off-the-grid* means, is totally self-sufficient; that might mean no running water or propane. Even *someone* knows you are there.............the tax collector in the town. ;(

I consider what Dick Proenneke did/lived was *off-the-grid*. Not meaning to take anything away from the congressman.

“What would EMP do to those nice solar panels?”

Nothing. An EMP goes directly into a power line and anything connected to that line fries. Whatever isn’t plugged in isn’t damaged. He isn’t connected to the grid so his panels are fine.

“...he is but one of multi millions who could even afford to go off the grid and buy these things on a government salary.”

It’s a matter of how much money do you have to spend - not a matter of living off the grid. I use the grid because it works - if it stops, I can do without it and have a reasonable standard of living because I planned it that way.

...try “One Second After” by William R. Forstchen. While the story is fiction, it brought to mind, at least for me, things I hadn’t considered.

One of the most frightening books I've ever read. The daughter that needed insulin was heart breaking.
