Venice votes to split from Italy as 89% of the city's residents opt to form a new independent state

Venetians have voted overwhelmingly for their own sovereign state in a ‘referendum’ on independence from Italy.

Inspired by Scotland’s separatist ambitions, 89 per cent of the residents of the lagoon city and its surrounding area, opted to break away from Italy in an unofficial ballot.

The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The floating city has only been part of Italy for 150 years. The 1000 year–old democratic Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, was quashed by Napoleon and was subsumed into Italy in 1866.

Wealthy Venetians, under mounting financial pressure in the economic crisis, have rallied in their thousands, after growing tired of supporting Italy’s poor and crime ridden Mezzogiorno south, through high taxation.

Activists have been working closely with the SNP on their joint agendas, even travelling to Scotland alongside Catalonians and Basque separatists to take part in pro independence rallies.

As I remember, Italy has not been a country for any long period, they were all city states before. Venice is just going back to where it was before so could Florence, Rome and etc.

Well, if this goes through, your next question would be -— will Visas to Italy be honored by Venice?

The floating city has only been part of Italy for 150 years.

Actually it's 148 years.

So much for the Risorgimento. Mazzini, Garibaldi, Cavour, and Victor Emmanuel II must be spinning in their graves. (Not that they were nice people, mind you.)

Why God forbid Texas?! The conservative states should secede. It would be excellent to ditch the east and west coast.

We in America don’t think about this very much. But, there are distinct regions of America, such as Texas, in which people don’t feel they have much in common with people in Boston, Cambridge, Berkeley, Upper West Side of Manhattan, etc.

Even within states, Chicago is a different world from downstate Illinois, upstate New York is different from the New York City area, etc.

Stay tuned. This trend could come to America.

If we split into a liberal America and a conservative America, some major issues would go away. Because critical numbers of people in each area would agree about abortion, homosexual marriage, the role of government, the size and scope of government, school policies, tax policies, and other areas of disagreement between liberals and conservatives today.

I believe Catalonia also has the same issue with Spain.

The nationalism of Catalonia and the other regions of Spain is, like the Celtic varieties, hard Left wing.

Next is conservative rural districts seceding from liberal controlling cities.

But it is after all their country.

Let them foul their own nest as they please.

Why weren't there a similar percentage of independent-minded people in Los Angeles to vote to separate San Pedro, Echo Park, and the San Fernando Valley from Los Angeles?

Why weren't there a similar percentage of independent-minded people in Colorado to vote to separate the sensible parts from the Democrat-trending parts?

Even if majorities had voted for secession in these American cases there most likely would have been law suits, etc. to prevent the splits, but it would have sent a message to the idiots in charge.

Have Americans already become Euroweenies?

Would love to see that happen. We are no longer “united states”.

That’s been happening in Atlanta / Fulton County for the last few years. Several areas have seceded from the city because they were paying taxes used to buy votes in the poor areas.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession_in_New_York

There are or have been several movements regarding secession in the U.S. state of New York.

The most prominent amongst these have been for a state called Long Island, consisting of everything on the island outside New York City; a state called Niagara, the western counties of New York state; the northern counties of New York state called Upstate New York; making the city of New York a state; a proposal for a new Peconic County on eastern Long Island; and for the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn to secede from New York City.

Relatively conservative Northeast Philly has been trying to secede from Philadelphia for decades, now it’s too late. The section 8 housing has contaminated it and the smart ones have already moved out.
