Ready for Hillary’s Running Mate? (No, REally. Seriesly. Beelzabubba)

Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

The ideal candidate would be someone clearly equipped by experience to handle the presidency at a moment’s notice, and who was held in high esteem by the public; maybe even someone who exemplified a time when Americans felt better about their country’s prospects.

By that measure, there is at first glance one obvious choice: Bill Clinton.

He would be by far the most clearly qualified candidate for the job. More than two-thirds of Americans look on him favorably, and last year, 55 percent told Gallup they saw Clinton as an outstanding or above-average president.

Bubba can’t be vice president. His 2 terms as president disqualify him.

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Section 2. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states within seven years from the date of its submission to the states by the Congress.

He wouldn’t be elected President though, it says nothing about VP up there or coming into office other than an election. He wouldn’t be able to run again, but this could work no problem.

Rules? They don’t need no stinking rules. . . .

That’s the letter-of-the-law argument my college constitutional law professor used. I don’t like it, as one can clearly tell what the intent of the authors was, but I concede that they should’ve probably chosen their words more carefully when building the amendment.

That would appear to be conclusive proof that a clear majority of Americans don’t have the brains to pour water out of a boot if the directions were printed on the heel.

No, what it means is that people have a short memory. This is a guy who never hit the 50% mark in either of his presidential elections.

He wouldn’t be elected President though, it says nothing about VP up there or coming into office other than an election.

My non-lawyer reading of this is that Bill could be elected VP, and if Hillary! were to leave office before the end of her term, that Bill could take over as President for the remainder of the term, but not run for election to serve beyond that term.

Having said that, it wouldn't make sense. What Hillary! would need is a VP who is a buffoon who has never run anything, such as is the present VP, so that there would be a disincentive to remove her from office, just as the present VP is a disincentive to remove the present President from office. There are numerous options, any of which would have the added bonus of allowing Hillary! to look centrist by comparison: Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren, Mary Landrieu, Chuck Schumer all come to mind, though there would be other options of course. OTOH, there are quite a few people--not frequenters of here, of course--who, given the particular set of circumstances, would rather have Hillary! removed from office and replaced with "elder statesman" Bill, which would not be the case if the alternative were, e.g., Franken or Landrieu.

Doesn’t the Constitution also require that the President and the VP be from different States?
I’ll do some checking...

Not necessarily. Jimmy Carter has a healthier heart, and besides having been president and governor has gone on numerous peach missions and actually did real manual labor after his presidency!

Nope. Apparently not. Per Snopes, the requirement is that each Elector will vote for two candidates (one for each office), and at least one of them must be from a State other than the Elector’s own.

Cleared that up... Sorry for the confusion.

Amendment 12 – 1804 – "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States."

Sounds like a disqualifier to me.

I don’t think it would be legal for Billy to be VP. They would have to change the law. On the other hand Chelsea could run as VP. Wouldn’t that ge great?

It does not require that the President and Vice-President be from different states, however it requires the electors to vote for either a President or a Vice-President that is not from their state.
