RUNOFF? MCDANIEL, COCHRAN BOTH UNDER 50 PERCENT AS FINAL VOTES COUNTED [McDaniel leads]

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi —With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment.

"Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious,” McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt.

With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up nearly 3,000 votes at 49.6 percent to Cochran's 48.8 percent, according to the Associated Press.

The likely runoff follows an all-night nail-biter between Cochran and McDaniel that saw each candidate see-saw between winner and loser. McDaniel supporters at an event here were ecstatic, cheering loudly at the television whenever new results come in while a country rock band and bagpipe band take turns entertaining the crowd.

Actually as it stands, only 1 precinct in the state is left to count.

Mcdaniel is close enough to avoid the run off.

Not sure what the recount parameters are.

However, if the 50% + 1 is the standard, based on the current 99%, the total votes cast are 306,305.

50% of that is 153,152.5
McDaniel has 151,842
McDaniel would need to pick up 1,311 to zero pick ups for the other 2 to avoid a run-off.

Do they actually buy the crap sandwich that the GOP-E is selling them?

I have lots of family that live in MS. I will tell you two of the main problems that I have seen which have caused people to vote for Cochran.

1) Name recognition combined with indifference to politics: Most, not all, but most people in MS are just working, living and dieing. So, they just don't pay enough attention to the bigger picture; therefore, on election day they pull the lever for the name they recognize.

2) PORK: Just for the record, there are plenty of "conservatives" who love the dole as much as the liberals! And in MS, there is an over abundance of these types of "conservatives"! They want the Feds to send $$, but stay out of their lives. We try to explain to them that if you take the goodies, you gonna have to give up something in return. Unfortunately, lots of them don't care enough to worry about the loss of freedoms. Because in MS, most people are just working, living and dieing.

Hell, some of both of what I described (sad to say) are in my family!

The outcome is a surprise to me; I would have thought Cochran would have won with 53 percent but wouldn’t know why hardly anyone would be for him.

The Carey voters won’t bother to show up for the runoff. Neither will most of the Democrats who turned out for Cochran. Those who have done their civic duty will return to their daily lives and will only be vaguely aware that a runoff will occur. The passionate and committed will vote on June 24. That favors McDaniel.

I have a friend connected to Cochran who said he would have rather retired, but the good old boys establishment really pressured him, basically promising to do all the leg work for him. They would have put their own new candidate up had they known how Cochran felt earlier, but as it is, they didn’t have time. Hence the reason Cochran put forth zero effort. He’s old and tired. Just shows how desperate gop is to keep power

Does someone have to get over 50% to be declared a winner?

In some states, an absolute majority is required, otherwise the top two go to a run-off.

I wouldn't be too worried, the TEA Party has, as far as I can tell, won every run-off they've been in, and by large margins.

Precisely what I think as well. He made it known that he really wanted to retire. He’s 76 for pete’s sake.

I find it kind of telling that his campaign sent out Gregg Harper to talk to the troops last night. Was Cochran already in bed by then?

Unfortunately not. I think runoffs are stupid, but there are states that require a primary to have 50 percent. It’s irritating and idiotic, but what can you do...
