The billionaire owners of craft giant Hobby Lobby are under federal investigation for allegedly looting hundreds of ancient artifacts from the Middle East for use in their personal “Museum of the Bible,” according to a report.

The Green family has been under investigation since 2011, the Daily Beast reports, when Memphis customs seized nearly 300 clay tablets en route to the Hobby Lobby headquarters in Oklahoma City. …

What about the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City? Or the British Museum? Seems to me the same argument applies, but I don’t hear any complaints from the NYT.

I’m sure they can expect a fair, even handed investigation from the Justice Department.

If you follow the understory of Tablets, recent discoveries and the ramifications to the Religious Power Structures like my fave The Catholic “Church”....

Control of contra thought and ideas as we well know is tolerated only to a point...

Then it becomes...

Racist

Hit piece to discredit the Bible Museum. They should be praising the fact that this museum is built with private funds.

The government surely does not want the museum just a few blocks from the White Hut. The teachings of the Bible are just too much for them, how far away this government has strayed from doing the right things for people.

“The tablets, which the family described as “hand-crafted clay tiles” and told customs were worth about $300, are inscribed with cuneiform script, which emerged in present-day Iraq thousands of years ago.”

In order to build a better case, police and customs officials almost always inflate the value of merchandise that they seize, especially when there are political motivations.

I'm also willing to bet that the Green Family did much more research than the customs staff on the 300 clay tablets that Customs is claiming are thousands of years old. I trust the Green family to determine the value of these museum quality Biblical Artifacts.

Wrong. The fact that no government funds were used means they can’t force it to give equal time to Satan or to display the statue of Jesus posed like “The Thinker” sitting on the commode.

Based on the story it appears they lied to customs on the value of the artifacts. How does that equate to “looting” artifacts?

Those aren’t private collection. They follow a lot of rules for extracting things from their home country. And actually there’s been quite a bit of kerfuffle about stuff in British museums that were taken during the colonial period. There are legal ways to get artifacts out of a country, even if the destination is a private collection, but if you don’t follow the rules bad things happen.

This isn’t the first time the Feds have gone after Hobby Lobby. It probably won’t be the last. For sure if the Dems return to the White House, or if the next president doesn’t do a thorough cleaning at Justice, it won’t be the last.

Just remember that HL can afford lawyers. When they come after you or me or your local church, just the fight alone can bankrupt you even if in the end you manage to extricate yourself, because they can afford to string this thing out over years and years; their lawyers get paid by the taxpayer. Yours get paid by you and you can only take a second on your house and try to get more hours at work to pay them. The Feds don’t like HL and when this investigation has worn itself out, they’ll find something else to go after.

This is typical of what has happened to companies owned by “tea party” folk, who find themselves suddenly targeted by IRS, and OSHA, and Wildlife, and on and on, all the agencies suddenly turning up on their door. And when the judge throws it out, they just file again. They don’t care.

When Stalin does it, we understand what it is and why no one stands up to denounce it, they know whats coming if they do. Obama does it, and no one denounces it, because everyone knows they paint a bullseye on themselves and their own personal business the moment they do. With millions of pages of laws and finite funds for lawyers, no one wants to taunt the bull.

Lousy writing - Is the problem with the origin / possession (provenance) of the cuneiform tablets or is it with the declared value on US Custom forms? Perhaps, in defense of the writer, maybe the Government is also confused?

However, this paragraph is bad enough;
“The tablets, which the family described as “hand-crafted clay tiles” and told customs were worth about $300, are inscribed with cuneiform script, which emerged in present-day Iraq thousands of years ago.” [Sheesh, run-on sentence, confused tenses, failure to capitalize ‘C’ustoms, anachronistic terminology.]

However, it should be pointed out that the war in Iraq did open the country up to mass looting and any artifacts or antiquities coming from there should be closely checked. Buying such could be funneling money to a malignant force.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week upheld a 2014 ruling by a lower court that dismissed the claims of Pierre Konowaloff, who said the Dutch painter's "The Night Cafe" was stolen from his family during the Russian Revolution.

A 200 Million Dollar painting.
