Dale Bumpers, Liberal Stalwart of Arkansas Politics, Dies at 90
The New York Times ^ | January 2, 2016 | Adam Clymer

Posted on 01/02/2016 4:14:56 PM PST by EveningStar

Dale L. Bumpers, a liberal governor and four-term Democratic senator from Arkansas who came out of retirement in 1999 to make a passionate closing argument defending President Bill Clinton against removal from office in a Senate trial, died on Friday at his home in Little Rock, Ark. He was 90.

His death was confirmed by his granddaughter Linn Bumpers.

Mr. Bumpers was part of a generation of moderate Southern Democrats, among them President Jimmy Carter, who emerged in the late 1960s and the ’70s. He always said his proudest achievement had come early in his career when, as a small-town lawyer in the 1950s, he guided his native Charleston, Ark., to become the first community of the former Confederacy to integrate its public schools.

But he is remembered more for what he did in the twilight of his career.

Three weeks after retiring from the Senate, he returned on Jan. 21, 1999, to speak to his former colleagues on behalf of Mr. Clinton, a fellow former governor of Arkansas. The House had charged the president with perjury and obstruction of justice for lying under oath about his sexual affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.

He allowed that the affair was indefensible, outrageous, unforgivable, shameless, and that Mr. Clinton had not been forthcoming about it. But lying under oath about sex was not cause for impeachment, much less a conviction, he said: It was not a breach of the public trust, not a crime against society.

The hell it wasn't!

NYT needs an editor:

“Mr. Bumpers was part of a generation of moderate Southern Democrats, among them President Jimmy Carter”

should read:

“Mr. Bumpers was part of a generation of leftist Southern Democrats, among them President Jimmy Carter”

Let’s look at this one:

“he guided his native Charleston, Ark., to become the first community of the former Confederacy to integrate its public schools.”

Per ‘Great Schools’ Charleston Ark. High School is 95% White, 3% Hispanic, 1% two or more races, and 0% Black. I expect when he did his accomplishment, there weren’t that many Hispanics. http://www.greatschools.org/arkansas/charleston/268-Charleston-High-School/

If the rest of the “former Confederacy” had been 0% Black, integration would not have been a big deal anywhere.

Typical Democrat Politician.

Carter ran an infamous race-baiting campaign for Governor in 1970 against ex-Gov. Carl Sanders, accusing him of the egregious crime of shaking hands with Black sports players. Bumpers had the nerve to co-opt the agenda of GOP Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller and take credit for his racial politics. Both are/were creeps and phonies.

Hysterical. The whole Democrat operation until the 1960s/70s was keeping the jackboot planted firmly on the neck of the Negro. When Whites abandoned the party for the GOP, they changed it to attacking Republicans as being racists while still keeping the jackboot planted firmly on the neck of Blacks. Some things never change.

Paula Jones' suit regarding workplace sexual harassment was a crime against society. The issue of whether Bill Clinton had and continued to engage in workplace affairs was of relevance. His lying and enabling wife denied it had ever happened in their lives.

When my daughter graduated from the U of Arkansas, he was a guest speaker. When he walked up the isle I was tempted to put my leg out and trip him and watch him fall on his face.

Then he gave his speech. This was not long after the Columbine shootings and he gave one of the most Down speeches I ever heard.

One of the students graduating with my daughter said, about Bumpers’ speech. “Well I guess we all should just go out and kill ourselves!”
