Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts. Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!

Where did you get the idea you can’t eat elephants? Not an ounce is wasted.

They seem to think all of Africa cannot be trusted with their own affairs

Well, even if they are correct about that (and they probably are), the USA is not the colonial administrator in charge of looking out for the Africans.

1808 was a long time ago.

The PH is assigned an area to hunt. His crew will police it because it affects his livelihood. Look up a TV show by Ivan Carter (probably the best elephant PH in Africa) He has a show Ivan Carters WAR which is about his anti poaching efforts. Hunters love animals, and hate poachers. They often get shot on sight in Africa in the wilder areas. That stops poachers!

Good that he wants a review before any final action. He’ll get more knowledgeable less political voices from both sides.

Don’t African countries regulate their big game hunting?

Very much so and depending of the species, the permits are VERY expensive.........

It should be noted that these are poor countries and without the income from the heavily regulated hunts, they wouldn't be able to afford the soldiers whose sole job is to control poaching.

While I am totally opposed to trophy hunting, I'm not naive' enough to believe that it is not necessary for the preservation of these animals.....

Elephants are poached for their ivory, maybe a working solution would be to hunt down the tuskers and tranquilize them and cut off the tusks before the poachers get to them and kill them.

What soldiers ? They are dying at the hands of the secret police in Zimbabwe that is arming the poachers, which is the major reason the onslaught on wildlife and the environment in that country is only worsening.

Hopefully not. Lara Trump could actually be their secret weapon. She is a huge animal advocate that has so far refrained from commenting on her husband’s love of hunting but actively seems to be working on the other side.

I support elephant conservation (http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org) and have a book about elephants When Elephants Weep (https://www.amazon.com/When-Elephants-Weep-Emotional-Animals/dp/0385314280/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1511020821&sr=8-1&keywords=when+elephants+weep&dpID=61YzfhGXWRL&preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srchthat) describes how intelligent they are.

There must be a way to protect elephants other than killing them. I went on a safari...the locals made money and no animals were killed by me.

Well, if you find a way to protect them without making them economically viable, let me know. Guides policing their hunting area is the best there is.

Kenya has tried the camera safari thing, to the destruction of their wildlife by 70%.

First you have to understand nature, just because none are hunted, they will still all die, as will you and I.

The issue is how to increase the elephant population not how to protect them from starvation.

And lacking matriarchs—dominant females to lead groups of cows, calves and younger males cannot grow up normal. They don’t know how to form regular herds and don’t understand what to do when confronted by threats. Without mature bulls to teach them how to behave, the males became unpredictable and dangerous, even picking fights with rhinos, pursuing them and goring them to death. They are without a doubt one of the most intelligent, social and empathic animals around.

The ivory markets should be shut down in Asia.

Horns on an elephant? The locals eat it all. The carcasses with the ivory detached left lying are the ones the poachers shot!!

The PH’s always have a contact with the locals who show up and cut the whole thing into strips and hang it to dry...biltong.

Con’t confuse hunters with poachers.

It depends, locally some areas especially in Zim are overpopulated now. Just for information, the only cows that are ever shot are tuskless cows, as it is a genetic screwup that creates an ele that doesn’t have tusks to help them survive, so they basically bully the others and are notoriously aggressive. They shoot them to try to eliminate the gene as much as possible, there are tons of them in Zimbabwe.

Legal elephant hunting is keeping the elephant from extinction.

Legal elephant hunting is hastening elephant extinction by just adding to the body count run up by poachers. Eliminate them and then I'll accept your BS about legal hunting being helpful.

The HORNS I was talking about were rhino’s.......of course I know ivory comes from TUSKS and I know the difference between a hunter and a poacher. One is legal, though for the life of me I don’t understand why human beings go and kill these beautiful animals...is it self-gratification or because they’re lacking something below the belt? And that’s fine and dandy that they call the locals for the meat and I wish poachers and those who pay them the same fate as those animals they slaughter for the black market.
Sorry if I’m not making myself clear on how I feel about this subject......../s

So what about in Zimbabwe, for instance, where individuals associated with President Mugabe have seized lands in lucrative hunting areas ? And where the government is actively supporting or even arming poachers ?
