A false dilemma in the context in which Christian martyrs usually became such. For when the choice is either to compromise or stand firm for the right, then the loser is the compromiser (as in confessing Caesar is lord).
If Kim Davis went along with the system, then she would have been a loser. What you are advocating is escaping (Matthew 2:13) a situation, versus being placed in one in which one must give in to the system or stand. In the latter case it is "Dare to be a Daniel, Dare to stand alone, Dare to have a purpose firm, Dare to make it known."
Rachel Corrie was not a government official. Second Kim wasn’t risking her life in front of a bulldozer.
We need lesser magistrates to stand up for us. Especially when government passes immoral laws that punish Christians or reward and encourage immorality.
Its not your call to tell others what battles are good for them to fight or not. Everyone has their own red lines. You may think it wasn’t worth it. Others say it was. Kim decided it was.

I do respect Davis' decision to stand for her beliefs, since it demonstrated her commitment to her faith, and that deserves respect. It would have been most unfortunate for her if she had folded, staying in her job and issuing the license, because in the long run keeping one's integrity and faith outweighs keeping one's job.
Since she's been effectively neutered by being financially crushed, it will now fall to others to fight a battle another way, that perhaps can result in government getting out of the marriage business entirely... but it's 3AM and I can't get started on that tack tonight. :-)

Oh, I would not presume to "tell others", unless they sought my counsel, and even then I would only express my opinion of how I would proceed.
As you say, everyone has their own red line. I respect Kim's decision, and respect her keeping her faith. Having a different opinion of whether that was the wisest decision does not affect that respect. And in becoming a martyr, she provides inspiration to others of like mind. That also has value, whether in a moral or practical sense.
