An ambitious attempt to marry conservation with the commercial cattle business on the Matador Ranch in Phillips County has ended in divorce.
Two years ago, the Nature Conservancy of Montana bought the 60,000-acre spread and sold 16,600 acres to the Tranel ranching family of Roundup. Together, they would preserve the Matador's rich grasslands while working the ranch as a commercial cattle operation.

Allow me to translate:
'We thought we knew everything there was to know about "Sustainable Ranching." So we found some chump who would do it our way and killed the operation with the tyranny of our good ideas.
'We've got money. We can do whatever we want and say that it works.'
Folks, as much as I occasionally admire the scientific work done by TNC staff, this is a very dangerous operation. They have decided, up front, "how many cattle the ranch will support." Then they go about "proving" it. Then it turns up as Federal specifications for every ranch in America. They are also proving what will happen when those standards are adopted.
It's the socialist mantra:
If it doesn't work, make it so that everybody has to do it and then we'll be right!
Alan Savory has already proven how to run a profitable ranch and still take wonderful care of rangeland with his Holistic Management program. He'd be the first to tell you that he doesn't know very much and is still learning.
How could anyone in their right mind enter into a business relationship with something called the Conservancy, made up of leftist extremists, and not expect to get jacked around?
We need to make sure not one dime of our tax money goes to fund this nonsense.
Man, talk about your thread where every single poster doesn't have a clue and makes idiotic knee-jerk comments.
The Nature Conservancy is about the most moderate environmental group there is.
Notice THE NATURE CONSERVANCY BOUGHT THE LAND.
That's their modus operandi. They're not the Sierra Club, etc. etc. that wants the government to take other people's land or tell them what to do with it. The Nature Conservancy solicits contributions from its members and simply BUYS land they consider important environmentally or in preserving a certain species. They don't get government contributions to do so, as best I can tell.
If someone wants to buy a parcel of land from somebody build a massive shopping mall on the habitat of some rare butterfly, other environmental groups try to get the government to stop them from building the mall; the Nature Conservancy merely offers the property owner more $$$ than the guy who wants to build the shopping mall.
It's simple capitalism. It's unfortunate this particular deal didn't work out, but the rancher entered into it of his own free will and the Nature Conservancy owned the land.
If TNC goes to FedGov, and foists regulations that harrass ranchers into bankruptcy so that the property value of their land drops like a brick, and then shows up with a check to buy it at a reduced price, is that racketeering? If they turn around and sell off chunks to preferred developers when the former owner was prevented from doing that because of zoning laws preventing rampant development, is that preferential treatment? If FedGov turns around and buys the land from TNC at a fat profit, is that collusion or graft? If TNC develops its regulatory management theories using government grants what is that?
Just because you don't know how it works doesn't give you the entitlement to pass judgment. Who is the idiot here?
With this little bit in the article, I have to wonder if a lot of PETAs are controlling TNC: The Tranels said, for example, that the conservancy required them to move 520 cow-calf pairs three times in one week during last summer's breeding season to conserve grazing pastures. Such a move decreases cattle conception rates and boosts labor costs, the ranchers said.
This was no accident. Some economic enviral terrorists with PETA leanings or a PETA engineered these 3 moves in one week to decrease the conception of new calves. Than means less cattle eventually in the meat market! The goal of Peta.
I hate to break it to you, but American farmers no longer even feed America. We do sell a lot of subsidized grain, but we have now become a net food importer, especially meat.
Proud to be a Former Idiot or no longer a donating fool to the TNC subtle but anti farming/ranching control schemes!
When you have the credentials and ability to write an excellent book on how to correct the damage done by the enviralists like Carry Okie has, you might realize who the real idiot was re TNC!
Until then I will depend on Carry, the other Good Freepers and others who battle the Green Nazis to keep this previously former idiot informed of what is really going on. Not the phoney baloney publicity of todays enviralist organizations like TNC!
The County will do nothing because this plan subsidizes the airport.
It also destroys the property value of maintaing open space. That makes the entire area ripe for manipulation and corruption, ala TNC.

That Environmental Laws May Serve the Laws of Nature
