Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.

In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.

There's a word for this: .

Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.

Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I did not know this site catered to parties...I thought it was an awareness forum. That is, aware of Constitutional issues.

Parties aplenty have been planned here on FR; funny you weren't "aware" of the various chapter party threads, since they are often found in Breaking News.

This looks like it's turning into one of those fights my real family sometimes has around the holidays...you know, where someone states a minor annoyance, everyone gets offended & starts slinging more annoyances, then insults, and finally no one will speak to anyone else until a Christmas or two later?

Now this statement, on the other hand, is ludicris. In my opinion, the ability to flag other users attention to a post is what really makes FR's software stand out from other message board packages. I've thought to myself many times when posting on USENET groups that I frequent how nice it would be to have a "ping" feature there.

I find myself agreeing the most with your comments above.

Some forum software will email you when a reply is posted to a thread you have replied to, and I find that is a fairly good compromise- obviously, if you bother to post there, you have some sort of interest in the thing.

Yes, I find the lists annoying at times, but they are also very useful in calling a group to mass action or attention.

I find I get on lists where people notice I have an interest ...that is fine with me..I see threads I might miss had it not been for the ping..

We have a rule in our home..we are all grown ups..we do not HAVE to answer the phone just because it rings

I am back on FR after a year away, and find I'm already being put on ping lists. I appreciate the compliment and think it a generous gesture. However, I do not now have time for them. I don't have time to figure out which I would enjoy. I do not have the time to ask to be removed; I have freemail I haven't had time to answer. So my messages are backing up, and I suppose that's just how it has to be. If only it was possible to "flip a switch," say, on the profile page, so that you couldn't be included in long lists of people in the TO: field. That would fix this so easily, if it is workable, and with no hurt feelings.

Just my two cents...and this isn't the kind of problem so severe it warrants getting angry with other caring conservatives!
