A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

To Our FReeper FRiends: We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our spotlight on various FReepers. We thought we'd kick back on the weekends and simply review those who've been featured during the week. If you missed seeing them and want to say hello to them now, feel free to click on the link to that particular thread. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today and tomorrow, please feel free to do that also. One of us will always be around to see the welcome mat is still out, and maybe even put fresh flowers on the table. :)

Between your and Meekie's Industrial Strength Coffees - am I in danger of growing hair on my chest? I wanna know!!

CarlsbadCaveman/MeeknMing coffee is a special blend. It is of the hairless variety, UNLESS you want it grow hair on your chest.

SENIOR ABUSE HURTS

“I can’t drive my car any more. They have taken it. It’s supposed to be sold for $1000.”

I was talking long distance with a senior citizen friend of many, many years. She was alert, well balanced, and rather healthy for her octogenarian years of strong will.

“How did you ever allow that to happen?” I asked.

“It happened so fast. For the week after they took the car from me, I was very despondent. I have been deeply hurt—beyond words. I am still hurting.”

“I can imagine. Do you think that you made the right decision?” I inquired further.

“No, I don’t. Really, I didn’t have enough time to make any decision. It was pretty much made for me,” she lamented.

“I can hardly believe that. Lynn, I have never known you to be a pushover. But I think that this time you have been royally had.”

“I think you’re right. In fact, I know it.”

“What are you going to do about it?”

“I don’t know. I’m still stunned by it all. I know that one thing is for sure: If they try to put me in a home, they’re not going to get by with that. If they try to put one more thing over on me, it won’t happen.”

Lynn and her husband, Brant, live together in their own apartment. They have sound minds, being independent all their lives. They have traveled extensively, usually by plane, flitting across the country several times a year.

They go to church several times a week. “We never miss a service,” Lynn told me. And I knew that to be true for I have known these two committed churchgoers for over thirty years.

Yet her car was taken away quickly, supposedly consoling remarks surfacing to Lynn that it was for her best interests, and so on and so on.

I can understand that if there were genuinely medical problems such as vision, hearing and the like, Lynn giving up her driving privileges and automobile would make sense. But none of that is fact.

“I feel cooped up in this apartment. If I want to drive several blocks to the store, I am now dependent on someone else to take me. I don’t like that,” she confided. “I really am confined to these several rooms unless someone comes to the door to put me in another person’s car.”

I recall the same happening to another octogenarian friend who was whisked overnight out of her lovely three-room apartment. Relatives from out-of-state did not want the bother of seeing through detail of taking care of their spinster aunt, so off to the nursing home she was sped.

When my wife and I visited her in her new-to-her one room “housing” a week after she was moved, she was in tears.

“I want a lawyer!” she demanded to us.

“Well, get one. There is the phone book. Look up an attorney from the yellow pages. Call the senior citizens network in the state and ask for an advocate,” I strongly suggested.

She was nonplussed at what her clan had done to her. She had trusted them.

“But no more,” she insisted. “I did not ask for this. They sold my piano without me knowing it. They took away my furniture; the only thing I have left is this bed, dresser and a rocking chair. I don’t know what to do. I do have my music books that I’ve had for years; but I don’t have my piano.”

This sort of thing goes on too frequently today. And it is a travesty.

The three persons mentioned above are all believers. They have family members who regard themselves as believers. And yet this sort of abuse is going on in that so-called spiritual environs.

If there are seniors living with you, near you or under your soul care, please do not hurt them by trespassing upon their hearts, their rights. It is not fair. It is not Christian.

Think: Would I want this done to me? Would I want to make my own decisions about my present, my future? Would I want to be in control of my property? Would I want time to make major decisions regarding car, dwelling, bank accounts and contacts with doctors?

Someday you may be elderly. Someday someone may decide that you are not going to choose for yourself. Someday someone else may sweep from under your feet what you have held dear.

Will you permit that to happen?

Then will you permit that to happen now to someone near to you?

There are times when elderly persons need others to make their decisions; but those circumstances should be thought through to the depths in order not to abuse the very ones we claim to love.

If older ones around us honestly can make rational choices that are for their good, then take the high road. Let them lead their own futures.
