A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Tell us your Isabel war story here, if indeed you have electricity to do so.
|
|
 |
Well, it was not the prettiest radar image for weather.

Having spent the last week staring at loads of NOAA weather graphs, all my block has to show for the event is a tree right across from my house that basically aimed at my house but was too small to hit it. Two of my neighbors helped me saw it away and we opened up our street for business. I'm not certain, but it may well be illegal to clear a downed tree on public ground in this city!
 |
The winds around here never got too bad, their worst in DC was around midnight:
But that was strong enough to leave many homes without power, and I and many other volunteers worked our muscles sore after the storm distributing ice to powerless neighbors. My hurricane relief work will have to constitute my excuse for missing the DC Chapter's meeting Sunday, but rumor has it tgslTakoma was out of electricity and so cooked up a storm of food for the meeting!
Well, that hurricane behaved just like a Democrat, didn't it? Mindlessly destructive and noisy! Hmm, sounds like a top ten list. Share with us your hurricane war story and I'll share with you my hurricane top ten list.

Top Ten Reasons that Isabel was a Democrat
|
10. It was an expensive mess.
9. The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit didn't try to stop it.
8. It received an inordinate amount of press attention.
7. It harmed rich and poor alike.
6. It behaved irrationally.
5. It favored the East Coast of the U.S.
4. It gave federal government workers two days off for free.
3. Its statistics were overblown, inaccurate, and highly misleading.
2. It was mindlessly noisy.
|
and the number one reason why Isabel is a Democrat . . . . 1. It thrived on hot air.

Here's my working theory on why Hurricane Isabel was a Democrat
|
To: FreeTheHostages
My Isabel war story:
Saturday I was riding the Capitol Crescent Trail (Bethesda end clear, DC end disaster). Stopped at Fletcher's for water, and was asked by Pacifica Radio if I would like to do an interview. Having been to many freeps, and having been portrayed very negatively by Pacifica in the past, I was more than ready to answer their questions this time.
The hippie reporter asked me how Isabel had affected me. My witty reply was that I had been on my way to a "Re-Elect President Bush" rally on the mall, but that we'd had to postpone it a day.
Utter, complete shock on the hippie's face. That was it. End of interview!

Yeah, and don't worry about the Ninth Circuit -- I think they'll reverse the panel on the recall. We can be cool and have one of The Mayor's donuts.

My hurricane story is I spent a few days watching it on the radar, releived that it was going to miss this part of the country. And really, the area that was hit was fortunuate that the storm had weakened to a category 2 hurricane by the time it came ashore. Could have been much worse.
Glad you're OK Free!

It was *definitely* a Democrat. The fact that Pacifica Radio was covering it is another reason it was a Democrat.

Yes, I think the experience of Isabel for a lot of us is watching and reading a *lot* of weather graphs and news! They're interesting to watch. I remember staying up late at night watching Hugo come ashore on the Weather Channel some years back. That one didn't weaken, it was relentless....didn't see any weathermen standing outside in that one!

No damage at my house. But lots of destruction in my neighborhood. If I ever get power back at home I will post some pictures (of course I am NOT freeping from work).
A new storm system this morning knocked out power for an additional 15,000 customers. My neighborhood is always at the bottom of that food chain.
My son caught a glimpse of the President on his visit here yesterday. Bush said "let us know if we can help." I know he means well, but unless he's invitin' us over for a hot shower and some microwave popcorn there ain't much I need from him right now. He can focus on smackin' the UN.

Hello-
My Isabel story isn't as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. Mr. iceskater did a lot around the house to prepare before the storm hit. We lost power around 9pm on Thursday. We lost water Thursday night also. We got the water back on Saturday. Thank heavens we have a gas water heater so we could at least take warm showers. We just got our power back yesterday.
My house is surrounded by trees and we didn't lose one single tree. It really was a miracle. I fully expected to lose a few and not one came down! Lots of branches and leaves all over the place but no severe damage at all. In fact, there really weren't that many trees down in our neighborhood at all. Some people weren't so lucky - one neighbor had a tree fall across the driveway and took out both cars. But in general, it wasn't too bad. No injuries or deaths that I know about.
The power thing was the most frustrating. We will be investing in a generator (this isn't the first time we've lost power like this). I will be writing letters to Dominion Power, the State Corporation Commission and members of the legislature. I had to throw away almost all of my food in the fridge and freezer. That was so frustrating. We did some cook-outs and fed a bunch of people rather than have it all go totally to waste. But even with that, we threw away hundreds of dollars worth of food. I went to the grocery store last night - I've never seen the shelves so bare. Everyone is in the same boat.
My family was all ok. One sister and her family still don't have power but everyone else is back online.
We had a bad storm roll through this morning about 5am. The rain was torential and there were 2 tornados in the Richmond area. We had more mud from the rain this morning than from the hurricane. The poor guy across the street lost half of his driveway this morning.
But after it's all said and done, it really could've been so much worse. So, I can't complain too much. Hope everyone else is doing ok.
To: Pippin
Hi Pippin.. so sorry you are stil without "official" power.
Just listening to Glenn Beck & he said some of the places might be without for up to a month because they need to MAKE the transformers needed.
Nice to "see " you... and I LOVE your reason Issy is a republican..

Corin-
Call Va. Power EVERY day until you get your power back. Seriously, I think the squeaky wheel gets the grease in this case. We went around our neighborhood on Sunday telling everyone to call about the power. We got ours back yesterday morning. I don't know if our calling helped but it sure didn't hurt.
There is a way to call them and talk to an actual live person. Do that too.

To: iceskater
Yes, I know a lot of people who lost of $ on food. Around here, that's a big thing. I have to say, the Red Cross has been terrific about providing hot meals and FEMA has done a *great* job delivery wet ice. The utility company's dry ice deliveries were absurdly dismal: too little, poorly distributed in huge lines.
We pay for these utility companies to have standby crews to put the power on. One wonders where the $ is really going. I have expect to hear Dick Grasso is involved.
To: FreeTheHostages
Oh, don't even get me started on Dominion Power's dry ice distribution plan. They were supposed to provide free dry ice at their office that is within blocks of my house. Mr. ice went and waited in line for 4 hours only to be told that the shipment was delayed and come back at 7pm. What they failed to mention on their public service announcements was that they were limiting the amount of dry ice to 2 10"x10"x2" blocks. That's not worth 4 hours of standing in line. Ridiculous. Frankly, I'd rather they spend that energy on fixing the blankety-blank power lines.
To: DollyCali
Yes, I do all dads!
