Popcorn sounds good. Believe it or not, I really wasn't trying to 'stir the pot', I just thought it would be good to review and bookmark these for the forum. Can you give a good example from this list of a schism rather than a heresy or rather why it is one rather than the other?

No matter who you are, you're a heretic to somebody.

I agree. I think it would be interesting where the three main branches of Christianity agree on heresy (most likely the first four centuries) as well as where they disagree and why.

Or, if you prefer, there were no heresies until the council of Nicea defined Orthodoxy, and Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire.

It's funny that the apostle Paul was already writing about heresy in the NT. Hmmmm...

That was an offshoot of the Nestleorian heresy, I believe

Thanks Kolokotronis, I knew you'd come through. Do you know of a link to any similar lists from an Orthodox perspective?

Just remember cataloging, even if just meant for that, sometimes leads to inflamed feelings anyway...with every split, there's a lot of pain involved, and a lot of hurt, which sometimes gets passed down centuries.

"Do you know of a link to any similar lists from an Orthodox perspective?"

Actually, no, not one from after say 1054 and before that, save for the filioque, we were pretty much on the same page as you guys. We have great experience with heresy you know. Most of those old ones, which still seem to spring up from time to time, arose in the East, generally among our hierarchs. After the Great Schism, what little talk we have about heresy is usually found in hierarchial comments on Western theological innovations. Though there are those who presently claim it is heresy for Orthodoxy to "dialog" with the Latins or use the "New Calendar" as opposed to one set up by a pagan Roman, we've been surprisingly free, as a general proposition, from heresy since 1054 with the exception of a blip or two along the way which were quickly condemned and their proponents anathemized.

"Why don't you make a nifty acrostic with the term Heresy?
Or perhaps you you might use Luther: the L could stand for Lucifer. I will leave the rest to your imagination"

Right! The "L" for Luther, the "C" for Calvin! Thanks for the suggestion!

True enough. I hope that with time, all sides may gain some perspective. I also realize that human nature being what it is, there will be the inevitable knee-jerk reaction in defense of the team(whatever the denomination) but I am interested in the counter arguments and links to other perspectives on the heresies. Even the Catholic Church made room for an advocatus diablo.(sp?)

"Judism is a heresy of the Earth Mother-Sky Father religion."

When I was in college, one of my buddies, a Jewish guy, dated a girl called "Earth Mother", a large woman. I doubt she's the one you're referring to, though, as they never fought about religion, at least she never called him a heretic.

Sounds like a void that could be filled. Perhaps you could recommend a History of Christianity from an EO perspective.

Here's a link to the library of The Church of Greece. There's likely some stuff there:

You could say he was 'mooning' over her...
