Christians from political left and right sign 'Civility Covenant'
CNN ^ | March 25, 2010 | Dan Gilgoff

Posted on 03/26/2010 4:27:43 PM PDT by Colofornian

A group of more than 100 prominent Christians ranging from evangelical minister Jim Wallis on the political left to...Chuck Colson on the right released a document Thursday calling for an end to the fight club tone of the national political discourse.

...the "Civility Covenant"...says...churches have too often "reflected the political divisions of our culture rather than the unity we have in the body of Christ."

SNIP

...the covenant...has 114 signatories from a broad swath of Christian traditions, including the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the head of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God...

The list...includes...conservative Christian leaders like Harry Jackson -- who led the unsuccessful fight against gay marriage in Washington -- to Morna Murray, president of the progressive Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, which is close to the Obama White House.

SNIP

Quoting the New Testament, the new covenant urges Christians to "put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you."

"We owe a certain responsibility to each other as believers," said Colson, an influential evangelical Christian voice. "This doesn't mean I haven't challenged some people's theology. But the document says we're not going to challenge each other's motives or engage in ad hominem attacks."

SNIP

...Wallis organized a boycott of Beck's show but says the timing of the covenant's release is incidental.

Colson said the document "wouldn't apply to Glenn Beck because we're talking about the conversation in the family of believers ... Glenn Beck is a Mormon."

Many Christians don't consider Mormons...to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian...

“Christians from political left and right sign ‘Civility Covenant”

“Christians” from the political left do not exist, these are Socialists using Christianity as cover for their politics and I’ll not be “civil” to them in any way, shape, matter or form.

Many Christians don't consider Mormons -- members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian.

Yep. And lds consider everyone else (not lds) as "whores of Babylon".

“we’re not going to challenge each other’s motives”

This is called unilateral disarmament. The issue IS the motives of the left, which need to be exposed.

Jesus DID throw out the money chargers from the Temple.

Jesus, the apostle Paul (Acts 17-18), and Apollos (Acts 18) were all harshest on the religious legalists of that era 2,000 years ago. The apostle Paul treated the polytheistic pagans very well on Mars Hill (Acts 17), speaking sensitively to them.

Colson in his quote makes sure people understand that he wasn't referencing the religious legalists of our day -- best represented by the precept/commandment/ordinance monger Mormons. So apparently the document covers how one Christian treats another.

Jesus didn't define the legalistic Pharisees and teachers of the law as God's people; in fact, per John 8, He said their father was Satan.

I just found out recently that he was a Mormon. The few times I'd listened to him, he never made that an issue or commented on it so I didn't know.

I disagree with Glenn Beck's theology but that is all I disagree with him on and I am not going to boycott his show because of that. He's getting information out that needs to be heard.

Why do some people always apoint themselves as the voice of the people? That tends to infuriate me, you do not speak for me.

Ecumenism is ALWAYS deadly to the Truth.

From experience on the Religion Forum, I wholeheartedly agree.

I’m generally civil because I’m civil. Not because I sign something and not because I agree to be.

Exactly. And guys like Wallis will want to hold the right to a standard he and the left have no intent of holding themselves to.

I personally would never sign anything that has Jim Wallis’ signature.

Well, I would certainly agree that Wallis has raised mega red flags in his writings. But as Colson says, it doesn't mean we don't challenge Wallis. It means that as we do it, we keep our tones in check.

So, what's wrong with keeping our content challenges the same for people like Wallis, but exercising self-discipline of our tone???

“Many Christians don’t consider Mormons...to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian...”

Well, from what I can tell, the Mormons know a communist when they see one—and they know what to do with him!

ALL Christians had better wake up to the fact that your enemy is at the gate.

I know you can come up with more than a few scriptures detailing how you should let your would-be murderers in, for kindness’ sake.

But they will not reciprocate your kindness—they will destroy you.

Some "persons" are "evil".

I'm sorry, Christian theology does not say that we must bow down to the servants of Moloch and worship his image.

Letting the democrats pull their puppet strings.

EXACTALLY. This is NOT the same tactic Republicans Paul Weyrich, Howard Phillips, and DEM Jerry Falwell used when they formed the Conservative grassroots group The Moral Majority. They instead united ministers and those willing to fight for a common goal one of which Reagan wisely rose all the way to the White House. This is nothing more than an attempt to silence the churches & Pulpits at a time they should be screaming the loudest in outrage.

To those who are false, to those who think they are ENTILED to my labor for free, I will stand against them whether they CALL themselves Christian or not.

Leftist Christians is like virgin prostitutes.

Well, there's certainly got a be a "boundary" somewhere.

A "leftist" Christian in the 1940s would probably be deemed a "moderate" today -- and "conservative" on many social issues!

So as the culture has moved left, and if the "leftist" liberal "Christian" is...
...comparable to a flaming 1940s "liberal" non-Christian...
...and barely to the right or barely discernible from other cultural liberals in circa 2010...
...there'd have to be at least some recognition that at some point the further one moves left with the culture, calling oneself a "Christian" no longer correlates!

“Leftist Christians is like virgin prostitutes.”

Although I’m not the ultimate judge of their hearts, I was thinking the same thing. It seems to me to be kind of an oxymoron given the support for abortion on the left.
