WASHINGTON (CAP) - American Catholics this week, while generally happy with the newly elected Pope Francis, expressed disappointment that the new head of the Catholic Church insisted on espousing such Catholic views.
A new study out of the Pew Research Center said that while 74 percent of American Catholics approve of Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio's appointment as pontiff, almost 60 percent wished he held different views on abortion, premarital sex, contraception and same-sex marriage.
"Most respondents questioned why the pope has to be so darn Catholic, to use a phrase that came up over and over again," said Pew spokesman Dr. Francis Spitznagel. In addition to those issues mentioned above, most Catholics weren't thrilled with the new pope's views on adultery and "pretty much any of that sex stuff," said Spitznagel, again quoting the study.
"Just once I'd like to see a pope who didn't have a problem with premarital sex," said Carole Thomson, 29, who describes herself as a "devout Catholic" who nonetheless has never married and has had 19 sexual partners, some of them women.
"It seems kind of backward in this day and age to have the leader of the Catholic Church unwilling to bend on some of these things," she said, referring to the basic tenets of the Catholic religion that the pope is sworn to uphold.
Most Catholics did agree, though, that Pope Francis was an improvement over Pope Benedict, whose excuse for not stopping the church's child sex abuse scandal was that he was hard of hearing and thought the priests were actually "amusing" children.
"Also, we're pretty sure the new guy's not a Nazi, so there's that," said Thomson.
Sadly though, its true enough even if this particular article is parody.
PEW is a hard left group whose political action committie give regurarly to the Demoncrats and never a penny to the Repubs....
Thinly vieled propaganda pushed to influence the masses....
This is so thinly vieled that it reads like satire...
It is parody. Go to the site.
This almost seems like a “semi-satire” post, such is reality today.
I thought this was parody! It IS. Look at the other link in the article.
But answer me this:
Would anyone bat an eyelash at someone like the fictional "Carole" calling herself a "devout Presbyterian", or a "devout Episcopalian", or a "devout Methodist" or even a "devout Lutheran"?
Is not the attitude portrayed by the fictional "Carole" mainstream and officially accepted in the PCUSA, ECUSA, UMC and ELCA?
The fictional "Carole" (or a real person like her) is remarkable only because her (fictional) attitude is contradictory to her (fictional) claim to be Catholic.
It is . If you look at some of the other top "news stories" on the site, it shows it is a satire site.
No mention of birth control?
Oh yeah.. Who needs it if you can’t use after the fact birth control (abortion)
“....74 percent of American Catholics approve of Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s appointment as pontiff....
.
Wow, how pious.
Do the remaining 26% want to scrutinize the conclave’s ballots? Sorry, they went up in white smoke.
“whose excuse for not stopping the church’s child sex abuse scandal was that he was hard of hearing and thought the priests were actually “amusing” children.”
What Benedict actually said is that he dealt with many of the abusers. And he did!
If they can’t get this right, what are the odds their survey is correct. What trash.
That site looks like a satire news site similar to the Onion etc, and the article certainly reads like its poking fun at the so called Catholics who don’t practice yet seem to be qualified on commenting on Church matters that we always see in the regular media ;)
Where the Pope’s views line up with the Bible on these topics, what the people really are saying is they really wish the God’s Word wasn’t so “Biblical”.
Everyone has sins they are prone to, that appeal to them more than others. I do. We all have wished some of the sins we really like, that appeal to us personally, weren’t identified as such, and were considered acceptable behavior.
They forget it isn’t his book, it isn’t any Christian leader’s book. It’s not the pastor’s or priest’s book. It’s God’s book to us. We didn’t come up with the book. It’s not one man’s opinion, it’s not a number of men’s personal opinions. It was the inspired Word of God writing through various men across time. It is the actual instructive words of Jesus and his teaching during his ministry on earth.
if they have a beef, their beef is with God, wheresoever the Pope’s views align with God’s Word and trying to uphold them.
I see from your statement that you don’t have much faith in St. Nancy Aquinas.
It is a parody site, pretty good article on how Obama plans to Boost probabilty of ABBA reunion.
She should be excommunicated, along with Biden.
Being an american democrat AND a roman catholic may be an OXYMORON...
What Benedict actually said is that he dealt with many of the abusers. And he did! If they cant get this right, what are the odds their survey is correct. What trash.
JCB, I think you win the prize for beating the odds, by actually quoting the second-most satirical line in the article (top of the list was "we're pretty sure the new guy's not a Nazi") without actually recognizing that it's a satirical article.
Well it should be, anyway.
