Charlotte diocesan, school officials apologize for controversial presentation on homosexuality

Two weeks after a Nashville Dominican nun spoke to students at one of North Carolina’s largest Catholic schools and delivered a presentation critical of homosexuality, diocesan and school officials offered apologies at a meeting attended by an estimated 900 parents.

“Many said that” the first part of Sister Jane Dominic Laurel’s presentation at Charlotte Catholic High School “was excellent and fully in line with the Catholic faith,” said Father Roger Arnsparger, the Diocese of Charlotte’s vicar of education, as quoted on the diocesan newspaper’s website.

“There was unfortunately a misunderstanding about the content of the last part of the presentation,” he continued. “In that part, I understand that Sister used data from the Linacre Quarterly, a reputable journal, and from other sources. That data can be debated and, in fact, is debated back and forth by scholars who are researching the areas of human sexuality. Because of the ongoing debate, it would have been better if these studies and data were omitted from the presentation to the students.”

The school’s dean of students and two assistant principals apologized for not informing parents about the presentation beforehand. (The school’s principal was placed on leave in March amid reports of mishandling of funds.) “Parents should have been better informed,” said David Hains, spokesman for the Diocese of Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Observer.

At the parent meeting, “there were comments from parents who supported the school and the assembly, but most of the comments were critical,” the diocesan newspaper reported. “Many parents’ emotions boiled over, with arguments even carrying over into the school’s parking lot when the meeting ended after two hours.”

“Two observers called the meeting’s climate ‘disrespectful’ and ‘hate-filled,’” the report added. Parents who sought to defend the priest responsible for the nun’s speaking engagement “were shouted down by other people.”

The Charlotte Observer reported that the Nashville Dominicans have canceled Sister Laurel’s speaking engagement at the Diocese of Charlotte’s upcoming youth conference.

“They felt like this just wasn’t a good time for the sister to speak again in the diocese,” said Hains.

Mine attended Catholic schools all the way through University and yeah I’d say (all but one) were business establishments first and foremost.

The different one was a high school run by faithfilled parents not the Diocese.

Another sign of the season.

The great apostasy and rebellion is picking up speed and taking territory. Knock it back a step and it comes right back and takes two or three more.

Each day I better understand what my late father meant when watching television he would turn to mom and say "We don't fit any more."

Too bad we can't just fast forward to the happy ending instead of ridin' the storm out.

but my children attend Catholic school. If all the families with “Obama 2012” stickers on their cars ..."

It varies a lot depending on where you live. Never did I see a single Obama sticker in our school's parking lot. Never. I wouldn't want to live where you do.

The diocese and school officials are “choosing sides” in the Great Apostasy.

The apologies were a huge mistake.

This nation has fallen because the preachers turned from preaching God’s words to preaching comfortable sermons that never mention sin or its consequences. They don’t even preach much about all the positive benefits of clean living.

Yes, this is the time to celebrate evil, not condemn it.. /sarc

Unreal.

Many of these parents want all the Catholic school offers without the Catholic education.

I suspect vouchers are also a big contributor to Catholic schools becoming more secular-minded. Lots of those kids are not there because of faith but because they can now afford to attend.

In most part, I agree.

The German State Churches (Lutheran and Catholic) in Austria and Germany are pushing hard to recreate bad old days.

There are a few free churches, but they are in the minority.

***for controversial presentation on homosexuality****

Just tell the truth about them. That should repulse anyone from believing sodomites are normal.

Quote- So which is the “real” Catholic church in the USA?

The one nancy pelosi, joe biden, the kennedys and the cuomo’s and any other liberal democrat belongs to...

When you can’t discern the church from the secular humanist govt workers in it, time to get rid of the church or the secular humanist govt workers from the church...

These politicians have no choice to make. They get to be on both sides because of wealth and power.and that is the church in the USA.

That is a CINO school. Catholic in Name Only. No Bambi stickers at our school. Pro life stickers etc. Priests prior to the election spoke from the pulpit about our duty as Catholics to support Pro Life candidates. Did not name names but we got the idea.
As to being upset, if you child is in 9th grade expect to have the topic broached in a Catholic school. According to doctrine masturbation is a sin. Agree making you gay is pushing the envelope but you should have heard what the nuns in the 60’s had to say.
IMO these schools are in sore need of nuns to run the show. Old time D.I. nuns.

Quite the opposite where my kids go. Yeah, there are a few Obama voters, but the school is barely scraping by. Very Catholic education ... and challenging as well.

We can’t judge all Catholic schools only by the ones our kids attend(ed).

Will we be having the same discussion about bestiality and pedophilia in 10 years?

Yes, although I still think polygamy may be the next taboo to fall.

First of all, you are right.

Second of all, most churches in the US are being coopted to the liberal movement. This has been a decades long crawl, going back to the late 1800’s.

What do we do now?

Polygamy is already out. There is no barrier to it now. Go out west and visit some of the smaller towns over run with old school Mormons (bring some friends, they don’t like outsiders).

For instance, Colorado has a huge number of polygamous towns in the smaller counties. The counties can’t do much about it.

Sounds pretty darn accurate, to me. But, the truth can be controversial to those who are on the wrong side of it.

Polygamy is not yet a protected, celebrated life choice like homosex.

Again, go to the mountain west.

It is where homosexual marriage was less than ten years ago.
