I bought something there about a year ago and they debited my account immediately and gave me the voided check. That's why I haven't stepped into the store since, and never will againHold onto your checkbook - this will become law-of-the-land later this year. Our data processing center is already gearing up for it.

I made the mistake of writing a check at a VONS last year when I was back in the states. My, how things have changed. Not only did the cashier tolerate me like a bug, the customers started making snide comments 'bout "who writes checks anymore?".

Has anyone else ran into this situation at Kroger or other stores? Yep. Some of them are starting to fingerprint too.

Ok, I was just wondering if you had acquired your spare thumb the way the guy in one of his books did.

Their policy stinks.
You might consider a debit cart. I have one and it's very convenient

Likely a policy to stop someone fraudulent check writing. Don't blame Kroger. They would not put the policy in effect if they were not having a problem.
It is like some small towns where you can pay by check without showing ID - even an out of state check. They simply don't have a problem with people writing bad checks.
It is your neighborhood, not the store.

Kroger owns the Fred Meyer Chain of Stores in the Anti-Chain North West. This kind of policy wouldn't play well over here.
Alot of people over here don't like this tracking the customers stuff.

That debit card you like so much has none of the protections mandated by law that credit cards have. IOW, you are at the mercy of your bank as to fraud and they don't have to suspend the charges till AFTER their investigation is done. That could take 30-90 days and you would be out your money for that length of time.
Just something to think about.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
I guess I'll pay down my credit card and retire the debit card.

"I am limited to spending $300.00 a week at Kroger."
While the check cashing or 'check cashing not' is very irritating; and I have never encountered this yet in my shopping and I write checks often; but what really concerns me; is their input as to what you may spend in their store. ; a bit mind boggling.
What, where . . .how . . . as to how much you can spend; is noneoftheirbusiness. . .

Please don't. Number1..you won't save any money. Number2..you work for nothing. Number 3..More Americans will be unemployed. We need those jobs.
To: lowbridge
if you want to cash your payroll check at Kroger in Louisville, they require you show 2 forms of photo ID, pay a fee, and give a thumbprint. Jokes on them. I use someone elses thumb.
Click here for instructions on how to borrow somebody else's thumbprint.

Late last month my wife was in the hospital for a week; the local Krogers laid off two people.
