Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our proposed press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 21, 2004
Schwarzenegger Supporters to Confront John Kerry
at Streisand fundraiser (6/24)

Los Angeles -
Members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Free Republic Network (also known as the "Hollywood Resistance Force") plan to join other local supporters of President George Bush and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on THURSDAY, June 24 at 6 p.m., as they protest Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Billy Crystal and Willie Nelson outside a "ten thousand dollar per couple" fundraiser for John Kerry at the Walt Disney Concert Hall--which was originally scheduled for the week after President Reagan died.

Carrying large signs that say "OUR GOVERNOR can beat up YOUR CANDIDATE!" and "Reagan was The GIPPER, but Kerry is The FLIPPER!" they intend to contrast Kerry's irritating tendency to "flip flop" his positions on important national issues with Schwarzenegger's "tough guy" persona crafted from his roles in action-adventure movies like the "Terminator." "We support President Bush," says L.A. FRN Chapter Vice President Ron Smith. "And, we believe that Governor Schwarzenegger shares President Reagan's gift for energizing Californians with a clear vision that will help President Bush 'terminate' Kerry's political aspirations."

"If America had listened to John Kerry," he continues, "Saddam Hussein would still be in KUWAIT right now, rather than being in CAPTIVITY. Kerry even voted against the FIRST Gulf War." Carrying a sign that says "Only 'FOREIGN' Leaders (like SADDAM) like John Kerry!" and wearing a rubber Saddam mask, Smith adds, "These 'Stars for Kerry' may have MUSICAL talent, but POLITICALLY, they are dangerously naive. Unlike Streisand, Schwarzenegger (like Reagan before him) has had the courage to subject HIS political opinions to vigorous public debate--at the ballot box, not just at the box office." In the words of nationally-syndicated talk radio host Laura Ingraham's recent book, those who support Governor Schwarzenegger and President Bush believe that these misguided "Stars for Kerry" should just "Shut Up, and SING!"

By harnessing the power of the Internet, the Free Republic Forum (FreeRepublic.com) gave birth to a new level of grassroots activism that demonstrates how dedicated citizens can effect change by awakening and mobilizing the vast numbers of Americans who still support the rule of law. The Free Republic Network (FreeRepublic.net) organizes, educates, and supports grassroots activists and connects national organizations with grassroots groups and activists across the country that share their common goals and beliefs.

It will therefore be visited by many LURKERS, and "not-yet-FReepers."
So, please keep any NON-FReep-related posts on this thread to a minimum. ;o)

While I expect that doodlelady's version of IPWGOP's artwork will be the "star" of this FReep, I also still plan to wear my Saddam mask:

Kerry criticized for French connection [FReeper quoted]
Boston Globe ^ | 4/12/2004 | By Susan Milligan, Globe Staff
Posted on 04/12/2004 12:51:21 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

WASHINGTON -- As the presidential race gets tighter and nastier, the F-word has increasingly crept into attacks against presumptive Democratic nominee John F. Kerry.

It has made its way into comments by the House majority leader, onto Internet blogs, and onto the Republican National Committee's website. It has shown up on sweatshirts and T-shirts, and been thrown around in columns by nationally known conservative writers.

Kerry, his foes complain, might as well be French.

"The French believe John Kerry has `a certain elegance,' " sneers a contributor [aka Prime Choice] to the FreeRepublic.com website, over unflattering pictures of the Massachusetts senator playing ping-pong, catching a football, and throwing a baseball. "Of course, the French also think Jerry Lewis is a comic genius. Think about it," the satirical posting says...

By Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, who crooned the 1978 hit "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," will sing for John Kerry and the Democrats next month as a star-studded list of entertainers perform at two fund-raising concerts in New York and Los Angeles.

Streisand and Diamond will perform together for the first time in 24 years at the Los Angeles concert, the Democrats said.

Kerry event FReeped today outside Woodrow Wilson High School in East LA

First of all let me say thank you to all those who were present today for the FReeping; We did a GREAT job, considering we didn't have much time to prepare, and that today is a weekday. I must say, I was somewhat disapointed that "Mr. Kerry" didn't get to see us, but as I'm sure, RonDog, and other FReepers present will tell you, we still got noticed by everyone else.

The highlight of the FReeping was of course "FLIPPER" (the dolphin); This guy stood there in a dolphin suit for some two hours, and let me tell you, IT WAS VERY HOT, that poor guy... RonDog also had the GREAT idea of bringing some "flipper" balloons which got a lot of attention. We had a lot of home made signs, and a few Bush/Cheney signs and stickers provided by Mr.Oscar Gutierrez, who also did a great job talking to some of the media people who were present. The flip-flops were EVERYWHERE, From a Flip-Flop shaped sign, to a bag full of flip-flops for everyone on the back.

Nonsurprisingly, there was some people who were really angry about us "ruining their party", there was some yelling, and more middle fingers than I could count; at the same time, there were some who waved and honked horns, I never get tired of this.

GREAT JOB FReepers!!

P.S.: I will try to get you guys some pictures before the end of the day...

Note the guy dressed in a "FLIPPER" costume, and the helium-filled "DOLPHIN" balloons ($6/each, inflated - from your local "Party City" store)...
...plus note the effectiveness of the LARGE BLOCK LETTERS on the signs.

Also there is a pic from "Sacred Cow Burgers" showing George Bush roping and branding the DNC jackass. How hard would that be to turn into a poster? I'm going to try and make this FReep, as the 110 fwy has lights, and I think I can drive and not get lost going home ;-)

As I wrote in a recent e-mail blast:
Note: You do NOT have to be a "Schwarzenegger Supporter" to join us at this event. The benefits of the MEDIA coverage of the "Arnold vs. Kerry" theme of "OUR GOVERNOR can beat up YOUR CANDIDATE!" should outweigh any negatives from the "Arnold is not conservative enough" folks on OUR side, imho.

The original artwork was created by Cox & Forkum , but FReeper MeekOneGOP has a nice version of it hosted on his server:

I think that if you DOWNLOAD that .jpg file to a floppy disk...

"Save Target As" a file on your "A" drive)

How early should one get there?

The concert is scheduled to begin at 8 pm, so I would like to have the bulk of our forces in position outside the hall from 6 pm to about 8 pm.
Security for this event should be INTENSE...
...and "rush hour" traffic in the downtown area at that time of day should be MISERABLE.
So, plan to arrive as early as possible.
I understand that the parking lot under the Disney Concert Hall will be CLOSED to the public, for security reasons...
...but there are many OTHER (somewhat expensive, but SAFE) places to park nearby.
Perhaps some "downtown regulars" can post their advice here.

Materials:

SHOE: Can be cut out of foam or heavy cardboard (foam is best).

SHOE STRAPS: Can be cut out of heavy weight, durable plastic or paper and look great if they are one color, or two colors (example at left).

MASK: Best if printed on heavy weight index paper. It will take one - 8.5"x14" sheet or two  - 8.5"x11" sheets (taped/glued together at the hairline works well).

You will also need 1/4" thick elastic for a head band to keep the mask on. Of course, some folks like to staple it to a flat stick and use it as a masquerade ball mask, sans shoe -- quelle france, nez pais?

Sandal whappers serenade Kerry

Reporter's Notebook

By Gregory Korte and Cindi Andrews
The Cincinnati Enquirer

John Kerry had seen the tactic before - it emerged on the campaign trail last week - but few others seemed to understand what was going on.

Young Republicans wearing cheap sandals got in the front row and started clapping them together almost as soon as the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Sawyer Point on Tuesday.

Their message: that Kerry has flip-flopped on the issues...

Pathetic Kerry Condemns "Rude" GOP Protestors
April 7, 2004

-- snip --
Kerry's playbook is so old and he is so dishonest, it can be infuriating. But there's a simple way to listen to liberals without tearing your hair out, and that is this: everything liberals accuse Bush of, is what they do themselves. So when Kerry talks about the politics of lying, he's telling us what Democrats do. He's identifying his own tactics. As an example, consider Kerry's freak-out at a group of protestors waving flip-flop sandals at Kerry's Cincinnati speech.

As you can hear in the audio link below, this man who protested the Vietnam War and whose party has defined patriotism as requiring dissent, grumbled, "Obviously some young Republicans proving that they are very rude and they have no manners." Oh, the power, my friends! I am paralyzed here with how impressed I am by his retort. Why, what a way to shut them down! Not only calling them "rude" but "very rude!" This is so pathetic!

Thanks for the link and the graphic. My son is good at artwork, but he isn't here right now. I don't know if he could do that freehand. It would make a dandy tee shirt though.

I am concerned on where to park, though. I'm not familiar with that neck of the woods. Disney Concert Hall is ugly. Did the same guy who designed that, also design Roger Cardinal Mahoney's "bus station"?

The money goes to the DNC for the Kerry Victory Fund and will be used directly in the key "battleground" states so, even if you have "maxed" out at the $2,000/person level, this is a completely legal contribution. If you plan to attend call Ira Lechner at 858/864-2258...

...The concert begins at 8:30 pm. Dinner will be served across the street at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion at 6:30 (doors open at 5:30). Leave [San Diego] by limo at 2:30 and come back later that night with lots of champagne and great memories.

Tickets are $5K/person for the private dinner with Kerry and the "stars" before the concert...
Which means that Kerry, the "big money" donors, the "stars" (and, one hopes, the MEDIA) will all have to cross over First Street - somehow...
...from their dinner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion to the concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
This will require them to pass through our "GAUNTLET of protesters" some time around 8 pm. ;o)
As I posted previously...
...see also, from www.musiccenter.org/directions_wdch.html:
I propose that we meet at the corner of First and Grand - no later than 6 p.m.
I will (of course) arrive early, to check in with the Secret Service, and local authorities.

I am concerned on where to park, though.

I'm not familiar with that neck of the woods...

The "big money" RATs and the "stars" will probably all be parking...
...on the NORTH side of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
So, perhaps we should consider parking on the SOUTH side.
From www.grandperformances.org:

300-350 S. GRAND AVENUE
California Plaza garage parking
$8 after 5pm on weekdays

Garage is best accessed from Olive Street
between 1st and 4th Streets.

We suggest carpooling whenever possible.

Note: The Walt Disney Concert Hall is at the TOP (center) of this map...

...near First Street and Grand Avenue.

After-freep report: John F. Kerry visits Wheeling, W.Va.
Wheeing News-Register and personal account ^ | April 26, 2004 | mountaineer
Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:37 PM PDT by mountaineer

Wheeling's afternoon paper reported:

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry as he kicked off his "Jobs First Bus Tour" of four key election states...

--snip --

Okay, that's one account. Here's mine:

I arrived at Wheeling Park's White Palace around 8:30 a.m. and stood near the main driveway with my signs. One had photos of waffles and said, "Where do you stand today, John?" The other said, "John Kerry said, 'Our Democracy is a Farce,' Nov. 2, 1971 at Bethany College. Maybe he should run for president of China - or France?" I also had an old pair of flipflops, which I smacked together for effect.

Shortly after I set up, fellow freeper sonsofliberty2000 showed up with a fine sign with a drawing of flipflops and a related message. We stood in the cool, damp weather for a while before deciding to to closer to the building. We received a few rude remarks and middle digits (Democrat IQ readings).

After a little while, a woman approached and asked whether we'd seen the kids from the local Catholic high school, as they were going to bring pro-life signs. We said we hadn't, but it wasn't long before about two dozen fine young people arrived.

Also joining us were some Bush campaign people, including one young man dressed as the dolphin Flipper
(get it? Flip flop? Flipper?)
Some moms with small children also joined us a little later, and they made pro-life signs.

One of the guys had a bullhorn, and we regaled the assembled Dems (mostly union) with various chants. Kerry was at least 45 minutes late (emulating Bill Clinton), and we couldn't see him sneak in the back way. At our peak, we had about 40 on our side.

The event was supposed to last from 10:30 a.m. - noon, but it was well after noon before the attendees started leaving. Kerry was taking his time, even though he already was late for his next appearance in Washington, Pa.

Our GOP operatives told us that he's really getting upset at the protesters greeting him wherever he goes, so keep up the good work, freepers and others!

Here is a SHORT EXCERPT from www.pittsburghlive.com:

FLIPPING OUT. Democrats once used a person in a chicken costume to stalk former President George Bush during the 1992 campaign. Now, Pennsylvania Republicans are using someone in a dolphin costume to go after presumptive Democrat presidential nominee John Kerry.

The Capitolwire.com Internet site reported last week that Flipper made his first appearance during a recent Kerry rally at the University of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania GOP Committee Chairman Alan Novak promises Flipper will show up regularly at Kerry's Pennsylvania visits.

"John Kerry has flip-flopped his way through this campaign," Novak said. "He has a bad habit of saying one thing and then changing his opinion to appease one particular group or another. America needs a leader, not someone who lacks the conviction to take firm positions on the critical issues facing our nation."

And, HERE is a short excerpt from www.cbsnews.com:
One possible attendee at the Kerry speech is Flipper, a man dressed in a dolphin costume who accuses Kerry of being a "flip-flopper" on the issues. CBS News’ Steve Chaggaris notes that Flipper made an appearance during a Kerry event in Harrisburg, Pa., on Thursday. "Interestingly, Flipper, who first made an appearance in Palm Beach County on April 19, has his own press folks who sent out a release on his behalf Thursday. 'Flipper to Join Kerry at Harrisburg Visit,'" read the release adding, "(Pennsylvania) Republican State Committee Chairman Alan Novak warned residents of Central Pennsylvania to be on the lookout for a flip-flopping Presidential candidate from Massachusetts,'" Chaggaris reports.

A blessing, and a curse, for Kerry
By Ross K. Baker
Americans would appear to be smitten with celebrities. No longer are the performers of Hollywood and the music world simply stars, but instead "icons," "divas" and even "heroes."

What greater benefit could come to a candidate than to have the most famous and adored faces in America lining up to endorse you?

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., has managed, even before officially becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, to secure the support of some of the biggest names in screen acting and popular music. At a concert fundraiser tonight in Los Angeles, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Willie Nelson will offer their voices for Kerry's cause. Among other glitterati who plan to attend: Billy Crystal, Robert De Niro, Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio.

A New York gala two weeks later will include Whoopi Goldberg and Jon Bon Jovi, among others. The two concerts are expected to rake in at least $10 million for Kerry — critical funds in a political duel with President Bush that will shatter spending records.

But the alliance that Democratic candidates have long established with Hollywood has never been more necessary — or dangerous. Money is driving presidential politics more than at any time in history, and with an evenly divided electorate, a link to Hollywood — or big business, in the president's case — could cost a candidate in the eyes of critical "swing" voters.

No Democratic candidate since George McGovern in 1972 has been backed by such star power. Yet, Democrats should be concerned that Kerry, for all of the high-powered show-business talent, might encounter the same attacks made against McGovern. He'll have to defend himself against the accusation that he was the choice of "limousine liberals" and show-business whackos from La-La Land...
