Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

I don't know if anyone has covered this, but I have heard that New Orleans could be flooded for up to six months. My question is, what, if anything is done about underground fuel storage, chemical plants and such? Will the entire city just be a bowl of chemical soup?

That was Senator Mary Landrieu who thanked President Bush. At least, she's the one who I heard say that. I thought that was pretty decent of her and I wondered if he would get a similar thank you if this storm were hitting NY or CA?

Someone, I don't remember who, asked which senator thanked President Bush . . .

Louisiana's U.S. senators - Mary Landrieu and David Vitter - today sent a joint letter to President Bush, thanking him for his declaration of emergency in the state and his public comments urging residents to flee Hurricane Katrina.

They also urged the president "respectfully but in the strongest possible terms to tour the devastated area as soon as practical," a visit they said would reassure residents that federal agencies are focused on helping the area recover.
