How & Why to Re-focus Halloween as a "Fall Festival"

Re-focus Halloween!

If your school insists on having some kind of Halloween celebration, recommend that they steer away from the ghoulish and occult and, instead, focus on the event as a fall festival. ...

No, I don't mind it either.

Posting this thread is going overboard, for that matter.

Yep, she's a real piece of work alright. There a lot more I could tell. Just glad my son divorced her, and I say this as a catholic who doesn't believe in divorce. In this instance, I like to think God might have made an exception.

"How can you be a "godless" athiest? "

I adopted that tagline after some wag here on FR told me that I was "nothing but a godless atheist." I liked the redundancy of it, so it's been my tagline ever since.

"Grown-ups all dressed up in black robes, marching up the hill to the highest point in the city."

Sounds like a Roman Catholic monastery near my home. It is pretty wierd seeing all those grownups in black robes. Kinda scary, huh?

I'm glad that when I first signed on to FR that I met right away some of the kinds of fundamentalist Christians who are the "salt of the earth," some really nice folks. Otherwise, I'd have had a really bad impression of them by now, considering the off the wall, holier than thou things I see posted everyday. And "off the wall" is describing it mildly. Sometimes I really have to wonder.

No, Pete, that would be the Right Wing Christian GUN NUTS that run this country.

Was the event associating Columbine with Halloween at all?

indirectly. it was trying to point out the halloween was evil, and that the killers in columbine were evil. they were hinting that people who celebrate halloween are evil.

and the church is in MI, with one family that moved here that summer in attendance at that church.

also, this is no longer my church, my family left the church when one of the pastors developed a god complex, trying to convince my father that the only way to heaven was by going thru him to get to Jesus. then told my father that he should step down from his leadership position and he would be allowed back eventually if he were to tell people it was his idea.

1Thess 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

I don't think that imitating evil is pleasing to God.

Don't even START.

Last Halloween, some nutbag gave our daughter some of the most bigoted anti-Catholic Chick tracts. The pastor was most surprised when I called, made an appointment to meet with him in person, and gave them back, with the observation that they were unwelcome and inappropriate for a three-year-old. I didn't curse, I didn't even raise my voice -- nevertheless, this "worthy" made a point to tell me I was going to Hell.

I think Jack Chick is the leader of the pack when it comes to faux-Christions.

For the record, the tracts were "The Death Cookie," "Last Rites," and "Are Roman Catholics Christians?"

No need to try to put down Blurblogger just because you feel your special day is being threatened.

. And it is for Christ's sake that Christians really shouldn't participate. But for you pagans . . . party away!

Neither of you interpreted, correctly, my response to "Blurbloggers" Halloween Satanist Terror Alert. At the religious level, Christianity chased out the pagans, as a practiced religion, over a thousand years ago. You "Christians" have nothing to fear of the ancient superstition. As for it being my "special day", it's not. However, I do know the history of this cultural New Years that was practiced long before the Pope made New Years to be on January 1st. Before that, it was a celebration of the harvest, not the devil!

Since those of you who ventured to (gasp!) chance the sin of replying to my sarcasm regarding Blurbloggers ridiculous warning, I'll let you in on another heresy. I don't belive in the Devil, be it Satin, Ol' Nick or by what ever name you want to call the various mental handicaps and illnesses that plague mankind, from just plain ignorance, to the pathology of serial killers and mass murdering dictators. In other words, Stalin and Hitler are not on record as having engaged in the celebration of Halloween, but oh, I'll bet they stopped it in Russia and Germany had it been a holiday in their respective countries.

As I first said, for Christ's sake (and I do mean to the good health of Christianity), leave the little kids to their night of innocent, adult supervised fun. Let them experience that, with faith in their hearts, all these ghosts and goblins are nothing to be feared. I may not be afraid of the devil, but, OTOH, "Blurblogger" really does scare me.

"Instead of candy howzabout handing out those pink chewable tablets the dentist gives you to show where to brush?"

I absolultely loved those things as a kid. I wish they made candy in that same flavor. THanks, Koko, for the fond memory.

People need to realize that people who don't have a God to answer to don't have any reason to behave in a civilized manner instead of blaming every influence imaginable. Somehow I doubt that Doom and Marilyn Manson were triggering something in the Columbine murderers that wasn't already going to happen. If the show had had Dylan and Eric going to Hell, though, THAT would have been pretty cool.

Pagan "fall festivals" were replaced by the Christian Halloween, so I think Halloween would be preferable to some neo-Samhain celebration. At least, for those of the Christian bent.
