When the parents of 14 year-old Alycia Brown of La Crosse Wisconsin found out their daughter was sexually active, they did what the modern culture told them was the right thing to do; they put her on birth control, choosing the popular hormonal patch instead of the Pill. When on May 7, 2004, Alycia died suddenly of blood clots in her lower pelvis Michael and Lorie Brown decided to sue the deadly drug's manufacturer in the hopes of having it taken off the market.
The patch, which releases a dose of contraceptive hormones into a woman's blood stream through the skin, has been responsible for at least 17 deaths in women age 17 to 30 since its release in 2002, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.
In September 2004, a study by the FDA revealed 21 "life-threatening" conditions related to the patch such as blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. The Browns' lawsuit claims the company intentionally withheld information from its own clinical trials and Food and Drug Administration records suggesting the increased risks.
Thus far, Alycia is the youngest of the patch's victims. Her mother told the La Crosse Tribune that the suit is only partly about collecting damages. "More than anything, I want it taken off the market," she said.
"Maybe I'll be able to save a life, if people know what happened to her."
Earlier this month, Ortho-McNeil agreed to improve the warnings on the labels for the patch to include the information that it had possible fatal side effects. The company admitted that the patch exposes women to about 60 percent more estrogen than those using typical birth-control pills.

From what knowledge do you give this opinion?
Well, it is of course common knowledge. But let's be specific: they were one of the most monetized, vocal opponents to the recent ballot initiative in California requiring that parents be notified in advance if their minor children are receiving an abortion. Note that the idea that minors need permission isn't even being CONSIDERED. We're just talking about NOTIFICATION.

The girl was 14 an her parents decided the best thing to do was to let her keep having sex? Then they went out and got her contraceptives so as not to be inconvenienced by the result of her sexual behavior?
Yes, my comment was simplistic. So was the answer to their problem.
I'm not saying they did something illegal, although assisting a 14 year old in fornication might be regarded as child abuse, but they can live with their actions. Hedonism has consequences.

a) a 14 year old's decision to go out and F any one she wants to? and
b) her parents decision that the fact that their daughter was out F'n anyone she chose to was something that did have the potential to result in something unwanted.
Maybe they should have just kept her off the patch and simply aborted each unwanted child?
Fooling around with hormones is more dangerous than taking drugs. Especially when safer, passive alternatives are far easily available. Same thing goes for the pill too- avoid it.
If that were the case, you would not even be able to buy bottled water.

They get the young girls on birth control.....
..and try to imagine immature young girls, who can't remember to do their homework, or what their parents said to them 5 minutes ago...
..remembering to take their birth control pills like the directions said...(and of course, no parents to reference them because the parents haven't been told)
..then, surprise, they get pregnant.
Planned Parenthood is no dummy....they have this down to an artform.
When it began, I too thought the name Planned Parenthood meant a caring organization to help families plan their pregnancies and childbirth.
These organizations start out with innocuous names....but hidden agendas.

She is married and going to college. I just was afraid she would end up getting pregnant before graduation and not finishing. Plenty of time after graduation to have babies. She wants 4.
I know many people who take the doctor's word and never get a second opinion, question his methods, treatment options, etc. I never trust the word of them, they are human and can have bad days. I recently yelled at my son's doctor with the resident and 2 med students there. That is why I am thankful for the internet. I can tell you also that my MIL had breast cancer and signed the papers for a mastectomy. She got home and was thinking it was a lumpectomy. She couldn't believe it when the hubby told her about it. She was there and not hearing what the doctor said.
Ultimately the parents are responsible, unless she wants an abortion, according to the state. I have a one year old daughter, and I pray that when she is that age, I will have instilled enough morals and values into her that she wouldn't feel the need to do this. I also will do my best to teach her that her body is special, a covenant that is to be shared with her husband.
I also know a girl from highschool who, at her 40th reunion, will be known as back alley Sally. I will tell that to my daughter often. Kids don't realize what a small role highschool plays in their lives. People will barely recall the good things they did there, but they will always remember the bad.

I checked out your page after that comment and thought it was because if you were a single male, seeing all of the ugly, scary women's pictures you had on it would frighten any man away from marriage, possible women entirely. Then, as I scrolled down further, I didn't understand the comment either. Maybe it was cocktail hour for them? :)

I had a step-daughter that was a real problem. Every word, act, concept, element of time or effort of persuasion was relative to what she wanted. If you rule out illegal acts, there's no way to control their behavior or to communicate with such an animal, so you just try to protect them from the consequences of THEIR hedonism.
It is possible that the parents were doing just that. I'm not going to judge them, and I doubt that they wanted their daughter to engage in sex. They're faced with a sad loss. Personally, they should just take the loss and stop listening to lawyers.
My daughter's been taking hormone pills (i.e., birth control pills) since she was 13 or 14, because of "hormone problems" (debilitating cramps, extreme behavioral episodes). I'm sure she would agree with you.
I decided to take a look at the Full U.S. Prescribing Information (PDF) for the Ortho patch. The indications say, "ORTHO EVRA is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use a transdermal patch as a method of contraception." They don't define who "women" are, but further on they mention three clinical trials performed on 18-45 year olds. They leave it up to the physician to decide possible safety in younger or older women.
It prevents more fatalities than it causes. Isn't that socially responsible?
