report: HUNDREDS turned away as Ann Coulter ENERGIZES packed house at Loyola Marymount - PHOTOS!
Voice of controversy [ANN COULTER begins YAF tour @ Loyola L.A.: Coming soon to a college near YOU!] ^ | January 20, 2006 | RonDog [and FRiends]

FReepers and bloggers on hand to provide THEIR commentary (and PHOTOS!)
HUNDREDS turned away as
Ann Coulter ENERGIZES a "standing room only" crowd at LMU

(James Carville, not quite ready for prime time, also present; unsuccessfully tries out new material)
The following "Letter from the Editors" (printed in the program for last night's event) set the tone for the entire evening:
"...Many people say that this a politically apathetic campus.

They say that LMU students don't care don't care about worldly issues. The critics believe that this evening will be a failure. They think that students won't show up for this once in a lifetime event. They think that we wont't be mature enough to allow the speakers to express their views. They don't think that this university is ready to join the elites.

But on Thursday night, we the student body of LMU will once again prove our critics wrong.

The university is having an awakening, and this event will be an indication of what's to come.

We will greet two of the biggest names in politics with dignity and respect..."

Well, they certainly got THAT part right!
It must be a RELIGIOUS school thing. :o)
If last night's event was a test, LMU passed with flying colors! Not only did they prove that they had good manners, they turned out in MUCH LARGER numbers than the nay-sayers had predicted, completely overwhelming the tiny venue chosen this FIRST of what now may be MANY similar events.

Both Ann and the Serpenthead seem to have been surprised by the very different (i.e., thoughtful, and RESPECTFUL) kind of audience that they encountered last night during their "back-to-back" appearances at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles last night, which were part of "First Ammendment Week," sponsored by the LMU student newspaper, the Loyolan.

Not sure about Carville, but I understand that Ann generally encounters a MUCH DIFFERENT reception on a OTHER college campi -- where she has had to deal with pie-throwing goons, and disruptors blasting loud music through the PA system during her speech, to drown out her voice.

Our small group of FReepers (and FRiends of Ann) who were able to get inside saw virtually NO protestors outside, and only TWO (rather lame) attempts to heckle her inside...
More soon.

Want a good laugh, read what the losers at Dailykos dkospedia put in her bio.Ann Coulter is a controversial columnist and television personality known for her virulent attacks on Democratic politicians and on liberal voters. Ms. Coulter rose to prominence during the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals during the Clinton administration, during which she worked as one of Richard Scaife's "elves" — political operatives employed to spread negative information about Bill Clinton in the media. She refers to Time and Newsweek as part of "the lunatic left". Recently, Ms. Coulter has earned rebuking from comedian and political commentator Al Franken, who has scathingly criticized her in print and broadcast media. Much of Mr. Franken's criticism centers around Coulter's poor research and misrepresentation of facts. Somewhat more trivial or perhaps pruriently motivated critics have suggested that her positions amount to trolling and that because of her pronounced trachea due to her being extremely underweight, appears to have an Adam's apple and therefore might be a transvestite or transgendered person.

Thanks for the report. Good news.
But wait, there's more!

Since we were not able to meet Ann IN PERSON after the event -- and God knows, we TRIED! -- we went for the next best thing, and starting working the crowd for recruits to the LMU College Republican club, which we were told has been somewhat moribund since the last election.

There were a handful of LMU undergrads who were hanging out after Ann's speech with us -- until we found out that "she had left the building" (a la Elvis) -- and they expressed an interest for REVIVING the CRs on LMU!
Ann truly DID "energize the crowd" last night!
We exchanged contact information with some of them, and intend to support any future events that they chose to sponsor...
...just like we did with the CRs from Santa Monica College HERE:
"Welcome Back, W!" HUNDREDS rally near Santa Monica airport to support President Bush – new PHOTOS!
FREEP REPORT: FReepers defend America's honor from leftist scum in Santa Monica ^ | August 16, 2004 | RonDog [and FRiends]

Last Thursday afternoon, HUNDREDS of happy, smiling, flag-waving patriotic Americans gathered outside a "private, secret" fundraiser at the Santa Monica airport to welcome President Bush back to Los Angeles, for his first visit to southern California since March 2004.

Two very highly respected sources independently calculated that over FIFTEEN HUNDRED people overwhelmed the intersection of 31st Street and Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica, just north of the hanger in which President Bush, Laura Bush and Governor Schwarzenegger appeared at a private fundraiser which had not been widely publicized until a few days before the event -- with the crowd outside roughly divided into half pro-Bush and half anti-Bush.

On a Thursday afternoon.
In Santa Monica.

Carville is clearly mentally disordered...
LOL!

The crowd of (for the most part) clean-cut young men and women quite obviously HUNGERED for insightful political commentary, which they got in MASSIVE QUANTITIES from Ann, but only in "bumper sticker" sound bites from Carville, who at times seemed like a worn out old Vegas lounge act, unsuccessfully trying out new material -- apparently crafted for the yokels in some backwater hick town.

His opening monologue, for example, included jokes about his being drunk at his own college graduation ("I had a 4.0...pause...blood alcohol level") -- and his wishing that he could have participated in Jocelyn Elder's proposed masturbation curriculum, because he "would have enjoyed the homework."
His stock speech was completely inappropriate for this event, PARTICULARLY at a solidly Catholic university, founded by Jesuits, and STILL quite conservative.
And, it went down hill from there.
Even worse (for HIM) was the crowd's response to his attempts to throw them chunks of the kind of hard core left wing political "red meat," that might worked at a Michael Moore movie opening, but fell COMPLETELY flat in this respectful gathering.
LOTS of "crickets" -- awkward silences with everyone's eyes averted -- where the applause line was obviously intended to be.
The LMU students (and staff) often seemed to be "on their best behavior" -- (perhaps mindful of the recent boombox disaster at UCONN, which made the UNIVERSITY look like fools, not Ann) -- but even the handful of Carville supporters had a hard time getting fired up about his frequent references to the, wait for it:
"Mess in Mesopotamia!"

(Who WRITES his stuff, anyway?)

Carville's OTHER primary theme for the evening was that President Bush had instituted a "consumption-based" philosophy, based on his telling the country to "go shopping" after 9/11.
From THAT slim thread, he tried to weave a web of stale bromides about energy independence, global warming and congressional corruption.
Not a pretty sight. The audience was NOT going for such simplistic rhetoric.
If Carville was "field testing" material for the Hildabeast in 2008 campaign, they are in SERIOUS trouble!

PARTICULARLY at a solidly Catholic university

There is nothing particularly Catholic about Loyola. Those of us who remain faithful Catholics usually do it in spite of our Jesuit educations these days. I speak as an LMU alum.

Carville has been a very effective propagandist in the past.

It sounds as if he's burned out.

Perhaps.

Or maybe he just had a bad day. :o)

And MISERABLE "advance recon" -- to have missed the mark so widely in his message.
While the audience remained relatively quiet during Carville’s speech –- uncomfortably self-conscious about his ineffective, inappropriate remarks -- their reaction to Ann was also somewhat muted, but for a MUCH DIFFERENT reason, IMHO.
They were hanging on her every word, too afraid to clap or even laugh too much –- for fear of missing her NEXT thought-provoking zinger.
And, they were not quite prepared for her rapid fire delivery, with a message that assumes a VERY HIGH level of awareness of current events.
Plus, her microphone was not quite loud enough to allow ALL of her words to be heard effectively.
