Hijacking the Hijacking The problem with the United 93 films.
By Ron Rosenbaum
... Why is this the third film made about Flight 93? I've watched them all...
When the controversy over the trailer for the new film erupted recently, the question was, "Is it too soon?" I wonder if the question should be, "Are there too many?"
Could it be that the three films are a symptom of our addiction to fables of redemptive uplift that shield us from the true dimensions of the tragedy? Redemptive uplift: It's the official religion of the media, anyway. There must be a silver lining; it's always darkest before the dawn; the human spirit will triumph over evil; there must be a pony.
That's always been the subtextual spiritual narrative of media catastrophe coverage: terrible human tragedy, but something good always can be found in it to affirm faith and hope and make us feel better. Plucky, ordinary human beings find a way to rise above the disaster. Man must prevail. The human spirit is resilient, unconquerable. Did I mention there must be a pony?
9/11 is no different. Flight 93 has become 9/11's pony. The conjectural response to the hijacking has become (even more than the courage of the rescuers in the rubble) the redemptive fable we cling to, the fragment we shore against our ruin. Or so it is as envisioned in The Flight That Fought Back and Flight 93 and now United 93. A film in which, we are told by its production notes, we see "the courage that was born from … the crucible" of 9/11. A story of "something much larger than the event itself," Greengrass tells us, a story in which "we … find wisdom." One almost hears the subtext: This is "the feel-good film about 9/11."....

Is the MSM presently helping us to understand it more thoroughly or is it helping to dull our understanding? Or is it hoping our memories will fade. It appears the main problem with Flight 93 films is that they help Americans see the face of the evil we face and why we must choose: convert to Islam, submit to Islam, or war with Islamists.
We have chosen to war. It appears that some people would have us choose otherwise.
They (the media) are simply attempting to PC us to death.
The "Greatest Generation" had whipped Japan and Germany at this point (time elapsed) after Pearl Harbor.
Deny
Deny
Deny
Deny.....
....until the lie becomes perception, which in turn, becomes truth
Of course Slate would dislike any film where the average American comes out the hero. We are supposed to believe that only the elite can be heroic and that we are blessed to have them to watch over our "uneducated" selves.
This guy has been drinking far too much liberal, Jim Jones kool-aid.
In addition, building on what the Flight 93 passengers did, as a people, despite the whiners and dommsayers amongst us, we have taken the war to the enemy and buit upon the legacy of not only foiling the enemy desires to repeat a 911...but also killing them by the tens of thousands in fly traps we have established in the heart of what has been considered their territory in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The more of them who are indoctrinated with their mid-evil ideology of hate and terror that want to be drawn to those parties, the better.
I live 7 miles from the crash site. Its hard to forget what happened. What bothers me is that there have been 3 movies made, but still no permanent memorial.
This is the same MSM that says replaying the events of 9/11 is forbidden, but replays the Abu Ghraib photos for weeks and invents stories about flushing korans down crappers. The same MSM that reports nothing from Iraq but casualties. The same MSM that when challenged to print the mohammed cartoons folds like a cheap suit. This is the same MSM that defends "piss Chirst" as provocative but runs away from any mention of "piss mohammed". The same MSM that finds a compelling story of valerie plame, but can't find a story in the fact that all credible intelligence agencies worldwide believed saddam had WMD programs. Is there not one MSM reporter with any gonads, are do they cut them off when they get hired? What a bunch of pussies - run away, its a rabbit, run away. I despise their self annointed superiority and their disgust for the common man and common decency. May they all receive a pink slip. Asshats.
Exactly...the epitomy of Hillary's "it takes a village"...because the underlying premise of that notion is that said village must also have the elite village "elders" (to which these people see themselves annoited) to guide the poor miscreants that live there.
WHo is suffering the most casualties in the fight against terror in Iraq
But indeed, I do find a "pony" in the 9/11 horror---lots of them, actually, above and beyond either the heroism of the passengers or the rescuers at Ground Zero:
George W. Bush, for the most part, responded as a heroic Churchill, not waiting for AQ to hit us with WMDs, but to do what needed to be done and risk having his entire presidential legacy put up to constant attack by the libs for doing the right thing.
The Afghan, then Iraqi, people for standing up to terrorists, risking their lives to vote in overwhelming numbers. People on this board who irrationally go off on "all Muslims-are-terrorists" should note that, as is posted today on FR, some 65% of all casualties fighting the terrorists in Iraq are . . . Iraqi military and police.
The U.S. military, for doing a very difficult job extremely well and with, by historical standards, a remarkably small level of casualties.
Tony Blair, Prime Minister Howard, and Silvio Berlesconi for not giving in to the peaceniks.
The "foot soldiers" of the Republican Party who, in two successive elections, turned back the Dems. Despite the GOP's egregious lapses on spending and border (non) control, there is no question that if the Dems had won either of those elections, our troops would be home, fighting the terrorists right here. And, yes, Virginia, we would have been hit again . . . big. Mr. Rosenbaum wants a "pony?" Try that one.
I don't know of any "fables" that resulting in saving the US Capitol (and a large section of downtown DC) from becoming a flaming fire pit. Nor do I know of any reason why Flt 93 failed to become an airborne terrorist weapon except for the "fabled" courage of its passengers to fight back.
Nor do I understand why a scorched but readable intact Bible (one of two recovered), and a burning aircraft tire, were the only recognizable pieces of wreckage discovered 25 feet from the firepit in Pennsylvania by the Flt 93 first responders.
Fable, huh? I wonder how he'd have felt being on that flight! Or had a relative on that flight.
Ron Rosenbaum just can't seem to get past the fact that even on the most tragic day in America some Americans still managed to fight back and win. His objectivity is a fable.
The key mythology is the Left's anti-american mythology. America is the second most hated nation on the earth and the Left is a full fledged participant in this hatred.
Slate and her readers find Flight 93 to be heresy. We are not United Americans-- we are shameful Americans who do nothing but harm to others. We richly deserve the rituals of terrorists.
This is a shallow beginning of an extensive effort to make sure this movie does not produce American pride. America's multicultural fundamentalists must remain in control and tell us mythic tales of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo. We must continue to bow to "true saints" like Cindy Sheehan and other coward paraded in front of us as appropriate PC victims.
I don't think I have ever read a more true post on FR. Very good job.
If Churchill had been Prime Minister of Britain in 1936 and launched a preemptive strike to topple Hitler's government and reconstruct Germany as a democracy, I'm not sure the historians would have forgiven him yet - or figured out how many lives he had saved by taking action.
I visited the Flt 93 temporary memorial after Easter. It was moving in its starkness.
Having no permanent memorial (yet) is far better than having the original proposed design.....the death scene "embraced" by an Islamic Crescent centered toward Mecca.
