How many do you have? Do you still have your childhood Teddy Bear? Did you ever wonder how Teddy Bears got their name? For any of you who didn't know - or don't remember the story behind the name of these squeezable, huggable little stuffed bears.......very briefly, it goes like this:

In November of 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th President, went on a hunting trip near Little Sunflower River in Mississippi. To make sure that the President had an easy target and wouldn't go home empty-handed, his hosts had captured and stunned a little bear cub and tied him to a tree. President Roosevelt, however, refused to shoot the defenseless cub and made them set it free.

The press who were covering Roosevelt's visit quickly heard of the incident, and the Washington Star's political cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon of the incident entitled Drawing the line at Mississippi. The cartoon, which emphasized the helplessness of the cub, was printed in all the papers, and Roosevelt's popularity soared as a result of his actions. For the rest of his political career President Roosevelt's mascot was 'Teddy's Bear', which Berryman continued to use in all his cartoons and which played a key part in the Presidents successful re-election campaign of 1905.

Although most of my teddy bears only come out at Christmas, I do have a couple that have a permanent spot in my house.   A soft, plain one sits in an old-fashioned highchair in the family room, but the one pictured below, which sits near me when I'm on the computer, is my very favorite grown-up teddy bear, because she's posable, and I love her hat and her granny glasses; but most of all, I love the voice that sings! (Chantal Kreviazuk, from the soundtrack of a TV show called "Providence", which is no longer on air)

How many Teddy Bears do we have??? I don't have any idea!

For instance, when we moved into our present home a few years ago, I made a big mistake and told my wife she could decorate our main bathroom in a Teddy Bear motif. The first clue I was in trouble was the appearance of a sign, in the hall, over the door to the bathroom that says 'I love Teddy Bears.' Inside there are 45 pairs of Teddy eyes watching you do your business. From Teddys painted on our shower curtain, Teddy decals on the walls, Teddy Bear handles on the cabinet doors all the way thru to 'Blossom' our bathroom attendant that holds up a plunger that holds the T.P.

Have you ever tried to do your business with 45 pairs of eyes watching you?

For years, my wife has made and dressed Teddy Bears to give away to family and friends, and sold many of them to others for gifts, etc. She has Teddy Bears all over the world.

A lot of the Bears seem to hang around the house. There is not a flat surface in the house that does not have at least one Teddy Bear on it Since March, 2005 she has dressed over twenty Teddy Bears to ship off to various destinations around the world. Since December of 2005 she has custom made over 14 real fur Teddy Bears using recycled fur coats. Mount St. Helens Syndrome

The longsuffering of our Lord is salvation. —2 Peter 3:15

On March 20, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington, a supposedly dormant volcano, began to quake and rumble. The local population was evacuated to a “safe” distance 8 miles away. Later, the side of the mountain began to bulge. Scientists were not alarmed because past research of volcanoes indicated that they never blew sideways.

Then on May 18 the side of Mount St. Helens exploded, shooting tons of debris downhill at the speed of 150 miles per hour. A minute later, the volcano exploded upward with the equivalent power of 500 atomic bombs! Two hundred thirty square miles of forest were devastated and 57 people lost their lives. The scientists had assumed that natural events would continue as before. But they were wrong.

The book of 2 Peter tells us of a future time when a similar misplaced confidence will be destroyed by the fiery end of our world (3:4-7). But the good news is that God will build “new heavens and a new earth” (v.13). He is “not willing that any should perish,” and He is patiently waiting so that more people will find true safety in His Son Jesus (v.9). They need only accept the salvation He offers.
