WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan formally denounced on Thursday the Tennessee Republican Party's use of Barack Obama's full name in a recent news release questioning the Illinois senator's commitment to Israel.
"The RNC rejects these kinds of campaign tactics," Duncan said in a statement. "We believe this election needs to be about the critical issues confronting our nation."
The statement in question, which was released Monday, said the state party is joining a "growing chorus of Americans concerned about the future of the nation of Israel ... if Sen. Barack Hussein Obama is elected president of the United States."
It also included a photograph of Obama from a 2006 trip to Kenya, in which he is dressed in traditional attire.
The news release was sparked by recent praise for the senator from Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made derogatory remarks about Judaism and has indicated his support for Obama.
At Tuesday night's MSNBC debate, Obama said he denounced those comments and did not seek Farrakhan's support.
On Wednesday night, the party removed both the photo and the reference of "Hussein" from the statement after Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander called to express his belief that using them had become a distraction, Tennessee GOP Communications Director Bill Hobbs said.

Actually, he wants the base to stay home so he can fight for the "moderate" vote with Barry Hussein and maybe pick off a few Democraps along the way.
Keep decrying etc etc and when the MSM reports it etc etc
It will insure that many more people find out
“Would Barack H*ssein Obama be acceptable?”
Or...
Barack “I’m not a terrorist” Obama
Barack “Not Saddam” Obama
Barack “H_______n” Obama
.....the possibilities are humorously endless.
>> McCain just wants to run a clean campaign on the issues
OK. We’ll see if he has the brains, balls and organization to meet Hussein forcefully, on the issues... or if he rolls over and exposes his soft underbelly at every “news cycle”, huddling with his PC consultants before his every move. So far, that’s what I’m seeing.
You probably think I’m gratuitously ripping on him, but I’m dead serious. I DO NOT want President Obama... but unless and until John McCain proves himself worthy of the nomination, support for him is NOT on “auto”.
I’m a conservative. Impress me, John. You have about two months. (Yes, there’s eight months until the election... but John, you need the money and buzz tap turned on well before that if you really want the job.)
BTW, this little anti-semite needs to be hit from all sides, including his middle name, his true commitment to Christianity and his previous drug use
There is plenty of evil to point out, in Barak Obama.
One needn’t dance on the line of racism.
>> McCains people and the GOP should have done all this quietly and behind the scenes.
Yes. THAT’S the point.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Common means of designating those individuals. But you better not use Osama's middle name, refer to him as a liberal, or question his non-flag waving brand of patriotism. That wouldn't be right.
“Hussein” racism? His name is what it is.
Is “Hussein” a race?
I am so sick of these wimpy Republicans ALWAYS apologizing to the Democrats ( their ‘’friends’’ across the aisle )
John ....these people are NOT our friends....
Wouldn’t it be great if we would have a candidate that would really go after the Socialist, Marxist Left-wing Democrat candidates who want to destroy OUR Country?
....This is a war John, a war for the future of OUR country....
I’m so damn sick and tired of people like McCain playing kissy face with our ENEMY...
McCain nees to hire Bob Dole to stir up the crowds!
And Kemp could always come out afterwards to apologize if Dole got too rough with the Dems
Now its politically incorrect to use a persons middle name?
The GOP gets sand kicked in its face by the bully on the beach and then, instead of taking the Charles Atlas course and getting stronger, apologizes. And so, my checkbook remains closed and unopened mailings from the RNC continue to fill up my trash can.
McCain is socialist lite thats why he wont fight he would be hurting his own !
That is a DAMNED good question!
That’s fine, but I just think that from a political standpoint, their response is best.
No, but making a big point of it in this case is pretty much racism -- trying to get people to think negatively about him by the racial and cultural heritage he was born of.
McCain has had frontpage coverage for two days in a row for his attacks on Obama's willingness to leave Iraq to Al Qaeda.
Did you miss it?
DO....NOT.....SEND....ANY!.....MONEY.....TO....THE....NATIONAL.....REPUBLICAN....PARTY....IN.....WASHINGTON.
Donate ONLY to local GOP or Conservative Third Party candidates whom are both conservative, and have your personal knowledge and trust to stay the course if they get elected. Then, tell the RNC THIS is where your money is going to go.
They will get the message.
Wusses.
