Gas Prices up, Production Down ($5.39 a gallon)

GORDA, Calif.- If you're going to be heading down the Big Sur Coastline anytime soon, you'll probably going to want to have a full tank before you leave with the price of crude oil skyrocketing. With gasoline following the same direction, the Americo gas station in Gorda, just south of Big Sur is selling premium unleaded gas for $5.39 a gallon. If you can do without premium regular's a relative bargain at $5.19.

Prices in many Bay Area cities remain above the statewide average with the price for a gallon of gas in Oakland at $3.51; San Francisco, $3.64; Salinas, $3.56; San Jose, $3.52; and Santa Cruz, $3.51. The average price for a gallon of gas in Santa Rosa sits just under the statewide average at $3.49 and in Vallejo a gallon is averaging $3.47, according to AAA. 03/05/08

BAY AREA, Calif.-The statewide average price for a gallon of gasoline has hit a all time high, AAA of Northern California announced Tuesday.

The average price throughout the state for one gallon of unleaded gas is $3.50, 1 cent more than the subsequent record for California, which was set in May of 2007.

"We're about 60 cents a gallon above where we were this time last year and last year was no bargain at the pump," said Sean Comey, AAA of Northern California spokesman, in a prepared statement.

"We may not have seen the worst of it yet," Comey said. "It's particularly troubling from the consumer's perspective that this is happening at this time of the year, when we often see prices that are relatively low."

OPEC will not put more oil on the global market, citing the stumbling U.S. economy as the reason for slackening demand in the near future.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries announced today that it decided not to pump more - or less - oil right now because crude supplies are plentiful and demand is expected to weaken in the second quarter.

Hold on just a minute. Our own government requires over a dozen unique formulations of gasoline depending upon local needs. It is a felony to cross sell without a waiver. Some formulations are only produced by a very few refineries, so there is little competition depending on market conditions, especially with refineries running flat out. Some product must be hauled hundreds of miles, and it costs over 10 cents to haul one gallon 100 miles. There are a lot of components that make up a high price. Government destruction of the free market is one of them.

The price of fuel will only come down when supply increases faster than demand increases. We can start fixing high prices by opening up ANWAR and the other hydrocarbon resources we have to production. It is just foolish to see China to explore for oil in the Gulf near where US-based companies are forbidden to explore.

A report produced by the Office of the Secretary of Defense shows the US has almost twice the hydrocarbon resources than does Arab OPEC.

We need refineries in the US- NOW. The brunt of the cost we pay is to refine the crude.

Help is, I hope, on the way. Currently in the zoning process is what will be a 15 Billion(!) dollar refinery here in SD, probably the largest in the world. If everything goes through, and we can keep our home-grown populists, and the requisite imported enviro-fascists at bay, it’s expected to come on-line as early as 2012. A pipeline from Canada is also on the way, and is scheduled for completion in time to serve the refinery.

Yep, I paid $3.19. Thankfully, the local grocery store gives a .10 off coupon if you shop in their store, and you can use two coupons at once.

If they can afford $750,000 for your average middle class house, they can afford $5 a gallon for gas. heh heh heh

Excellent! About time too. We need more refineries. Assuming it does all go well, the only thing you’d have to watch out for then is ELF. ;o)

I must say, I’m feeling pretty good right now about trading in the Tundra for a Corolla 2 years ago :)

I know that’s a common perception, but how much of an “oil man’ is Bush anyway? Not being cute, just don’t know.

I know he’s also owned a baseball team at some point, is he a big defender of “big ball”?

I'm sure the Congresscritters and Senators are going to scream and demand hearings NOW to fix the problem, TODAY! - just like they did right before the 2006 election when they used this critical kitchen table issue to help drive the GOP out of office, right? The high prices then ($2.40/gal) seem awfully cheap today. After all, it was the GOP's fault because they were in Big Oil's pocket, right?

Typical. While oil companies know customers may gripe and complain on the internet (but cannot actually stop the high prices), they continue to make billions.

Oh, but some will say, the oil companies do so much good...research, etc..... Even so, their profits are astronomical, while lowly Americans struggle to fill up the tanks.

Naw, Congress is more concerned about determining whether Roger Clemens is telling the truth or not.

He was in the oil industry, and I don’t know for sure, but I’d be shocked if he didn’t still have money in the industry. When you are in a business, you make many friends, and contacts. If you’re asking for concrete hard evidence, I think I made it clear in my post it was pure conjecture on my part.

Baseball doesn’t need any help. Have you seen the salaries of the players, or tried to buy a ticket?

The answer, of course, is tougher environmental laws.

Oh, sure.

...and if you believe Hillary will bring gasoline prices down, I've got a socialized medicine program I'd like to sell you...

My Virago 250 gets 83-88 mpg.

I’m wondering when the notion of lowering the speed limit will come up again.

“...and if you believe Hillary will bring gasoline prices down, I’ve got a socialized medicine program I’d like to sell you...”

I believe a Democrat would meddle with the oil companies. Last time that happened, we got shortages and gas lines.

To say nothing can be done just doesn’t seem reasonable. To say that the current administration is concerned about the price of gas would be difficult to believe. Did you see President Bush’s reaction when a reporter told him gas is expected to hit $4/gal? His reaction reminded me of Bush Sr. in his infamous trip to the grocery store. Disconnected would best describe both.

Finally, doesn’t matter what I believe. I have no clout, just 1 vote, and I’m not wealthy, (well the IRS thinks so, but that’s another story). What matters what the people believe, and how they vote. I’m telling you, make them hurt enough at the pump, and they would give anyone new a shot at making it better.
