We pay Uncle Sam the same no matter where we live, but property, gasoline, tobacco, sales and state income taxes are all over the map.
The differences can be extreme. An Alaskan keeps 7 cents more of every dollar than a Vermonter, once cities and the state have grabbed their shares.
Factor in federal taxes and the gap grows even wider. Those who earn more money generally pay a greater percentage of it in federal taxes, so states with a greater percentage of highly paid workers end up paying more.
The state in which residents pay the most in combined state, local and federal taxes, per capita, is Connecticut (38.3%), followed by New York (37.1%), New Jersey (35.6%) and Nevada (35.2%). Oklahoma residents pay the least (27.8%), followed by those in Alabama (28.0%) and Alaska (28.1%).

One really should include auto and home insurance rates as they are effectively a tax for most people (and are often partly rigged by the state).
But the article is wrong because Indiana's sales tax was raised to 7% months ago.The increased sales tax is supposed to offset property taxes which were getting out of hand, especially for people of limited income.
I have always thought the most evil tax is that which forced someone out of the home he or she had bought long ago.
Is that table available in a file type to be able to sort by any column?
That is true but the point is that since we have on display how broken the government is and how out of control the spending is this is the perfect time to start educating. Most of the public do not support these bailouts so it seems that most people only need a little push to go a bit further in their understanding. No one with any degree of sense believes the government deserves more money or the faith of the citizen. There will always be those who look doe eyed after those who would be their lord but they are not the majority. The problem is speaking to people in terms that resonate with them. People don’t trust the government and that is one place to start.
Don’t forget that one can live in WA (no income tax) and shop in OR (no sales tax). Same with WY and MT except there is a lot more driving involved.
.....and you can live in Stevenson WA and look at the Bridge of the Gods.
Here in Illinois, they have taxes and fees for so many things that it’s impossible to truly compute the tax burden. Much of it is disguised so the sheeple will not rebel. Cook County (Land of Obama) is the worst.
Just one example. If you fly through OHare Airport you pay the City of Chicago $10 for landing and $10 for taking off.
What kind of deeply stupid methodology was used for this? Is this some sort of disinformation? Where is the STATE INCOME TAX in the chart? There is NO WAY that Washington State tax is higher than Oregon tax if you work for a living. Oregon has a 9% income tax and 0% sales tax. Washington has the opposite, an 8% sales tax and 0% income tax.
I’ve seen this chart in years past, and had the same reaction. Sadly the article doesn’t say who is producing it. Who ever it is they have they are confused.
Well they tried and failed in that effort in 1861-1865. They do have a clause which allows them to split into up to five separate states, with two senators each, without approval from Washington.
I pulled the data from page 2 in the article from the source. I did not see a link to download into an excel file
we pay 9% sales tax in Dothan Alabama, obviously this chart is for state percentage only...add city, county, etc
The only difference between "fee" and "free" is an R.
Do you live up there? Beautiful country. The Bridge seems a little rickety though, somehow I always get the creeps going over it, especially on a motorcycle.
Sarah Palin = No more pussy-footing!
New York State has county sales takes on top of the state tax. Our county sales tax is > 8%. When you buy something you can be asked which county you live.
MD has a crazy county income tax piggybacked on the state income tax. Not sure if it's included above.
I cut this out of the article for all you folks who still think Tennessee doesn't have an income tax!
You can compare red and blue states, but blue states usually have a higher annual salary so I guess it evens out. Would you rather make 19,000 dollars in red Mississippi or 70,000 in blue Conneticut. If you pay 30 percent in Conneticut, you end up with 49,000 dollars. If you pay 20 percent in blue Mississippi you end up with 15,400. I know I could live on 49,000 dollars but no way could I live on 15,400...Don’t you think that alone is telling and why comparing the red and blue states does not work out exactly what people believe.
That's rich. So now you're paying sky high property tax and sales tax.
Good thing us smokers got a friend in the White House. :^)
