Incredible wacky science. See live mammoths in the zoos. Sabre-Toothed Tigers and Neanderthal Man (Homo neanderthalensis) may stalk the streets of Detroit after they escape from laboratories. Invite a happy T-Rex to lunch.

Gobble, gobble. Slurp. Burp. Belch . . .LOL, LOL !

Insanity prevails. Really. The inmates are in charge of the asylum. Oh, well. Nothing to see here. Time to move on.

Bring it on! I have been reading news items like this for years, and I am starting to get impatient!

I want them to bring back wooly mammoths, giant sloths, etcetera. How cool would that be? Imagine the hunting!

Science is just moving too damn slow! They need to crank up this sort of science. Genetic engineering in particular. I want corn on the cob as long as my arm. I want a herd of miniature cows for my back yard. Just think, you could grill a whole side of mini-beef! I want a genetic combination of coffee and tobacco.

Someday, they will figure out how to make a living couch. It will be soft, warm and furry and able to survive on nothing more than butt sweat and the crumbs that fall between the cushions.

While no one is talking seriously of bringing back Neanderthals (as per the linked article), I would love to see any and all of the other species mentioned brought back. More power to them!

Isn’t this a lot like bailing out failed companies?

I mean, they didn’t make it the first time they were here.

It's already been done. Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes the honking horns of your traffic make me want to get out of my BMW.. and run off into the hills, or wherever.. Sometimes when I get a message on my fax machine, I wonder: "Did little demons get inside and type it?" I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - when a man like my client slips and falls on a sidewalk in front of a public library, then he is entitled to no less than two million in compensatory damages, and two million in punitive damages. Thank you.

It seems that Keynesians should be on the list, although they have already been resurrected, and appear to have multiplied rapidly.

First, there is no such thing as an ex Texan. Former Texan yes.
My selection for bringing back would be the Passenger Pigeon. There use to be millions of them, in fact some reports said that the sun would be blocked out just from the flight of them.

The very best to you and yours.

I guess my plans to buy some land in the northwest territories and start a mammoth ranch aren’t so crazy after all.

Neanderthal Man (Homo neanderthalensis) may stalk the streets of Detroit after they escape from laboratories.

I think that has already happened.

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Even if the specimen is dried or frozen, depurination leads to a DNA sequence that is impossible to reconstruct with certainty. Trying to go from that reconstructed DNA to a living organism is pretty unlikely.

From this source: The production of authentic ancient DNA sequences is plagued by five major difficulties that we will discuss in this chapter. These are (i) polymerase errors resulting from experimental conditions and/or inhibitors of the fossil extract, (ii) modification of ancient DNA sequences carrying miscoding lesions, (iii) contamination by modern DNA (including products of previous PCR and cloning reactions), (iv) modification of contaminant DNA (i.e., DNA of more recent origin that has been modified by natural processes or decontamination procedures such as UV irradiation and/or treatment with bleach), (v) production by jumping PCR of chimeric PCR products between depurinated “fossil” DNA fragments, possibly of a different origin, and contaminating modern DNA molecules.

See also McMaster Ancient DNA Centre.
