[ /sarcasm on ]

Obama is on top of things. He will send Hillary to see how much radiation there is with a close up inspection of the underground site, and then give North Korea $10 billion in foreign aid...

Obama is on top of things. He has already sent orders to all military commanders in the area. Belay that last remark...

Obama sent "Happy Memorial Day Messages" to military commanders in the area -- forgot to send accompanying orders about the situation in North Korea...

[ /sarcasm off ]

Although there’s strong language involved, it’s worth Googling the Youtube clip of Team America Kim Jong Il with Hans Blix.

Hmm... can't wait, can they?

I came across an interesting column at a S. Korean newspaper(Chosun Ilbo.)

The columnist claims that Obama is set to dispatch high level U.S. emissary to N. Korea in turn for possible trial and subsequent pardon of two female journalists detained by N. Korea some weeks ago. The short list of emissary includes Henry Kissinger, Daddy Bush, and Al Gore, according to him.

If that is true, I supposed Chia Head want the possible emissary to grovel under him. Not sure how credible it is, but something to look out for.

Would NK's nuke test unravel this arrangement? We will see.

How is it the Russians have confirmed before the United States that it was a succesful nuclear test? I thought we were supposed to be the leader in nuclear proliferation, etc...?

Nice find!

By their formula 4.5 Richter implies 1.8 kt. 4.7 Richter, which I've also seen claimed, would imply 2.8 kt. They'd have to get to 5.2 Richter to equal the Pakistani's 9 kt. Trinity would have given a 5.5 had it been a "hard rock underground nuclear test," but it was above ground so their formula didn't apply.

Mb [in Richter] = 4.262+0.973 log Y [in kt]

To rewrite their formula 4.262 Richter implies 1 kt yield and yield increases exponentially by a factor of 10.66 for each 1 additional Richter point up to the yield bounds of the equation, 120 kt or 6.3 Richter.

A gift from Pelosi?

She's currently bombing in Shanghai, not Pyongyang. But as she's in the neighborhood, and in one of the few countries with direct communications there, I suppose we could have the Chicoms send her there. Maybe Kim could lock her up and save Obama the trouble of acting on her himself.

There are satellites up there which can see the flash of radiation. Also a natural earthquake does not have the same seismic profile as a nuclear test even though both register on the Richter scale. The US doubtless knows more than it’s letting on.

Thank you. I will try not to be overly dramatic here; for I am far from the action in many ways, there are many more I myself worry about (US troops in Korea right on the trip wire, US troops in Northern Japan, citizens in Northern Japan (Hokkaido, Tohoku), etc. etc.) One thing is sure, The President and Washington, D.C. (not to mention the UN tomorrow in Manhattan) is doing the same empty, theatric saber-rattling they did when the Norkies launched Taepodong-2 over Japan at Hawaii on 5 April, then backed down and nothing happened. What does anything THINK Kim Jong il is going to do after that?! So all of these excited, tension-filled yet paper tiger-like warnings and pronouncements and threats and comments coming out of D.C. in the middle of the night are like the boy crying Wolf—sheesh! Pyongyang is SO IMMMUNE TO THIS, HELLLLOOOOO???? (ask Bolton). North Korea knows full what who and what is our State Department and Obama; they havent a single fart of a CARE nor WORRY about any blowback. It is JAPAN and perhaps SOUTH KOREA they truly fear. I for one think Japan should assemble a crack team with Israel, who is facing the same damned problem with Teheran, and go in as a joint allied team and surgically fix this thing, once and for all. I won’t elaborate past what the “fix” would be. But the moral of the story is how to handle a bully in the neighborhood. This “bully” (namely 5-foot2-inch tall trouble making, mentally unbalanced munchkin) is way past his pathetic self life if you ask me.

Nothing the North Koreans could do, outside of all out war, will change the appeasement loving Democrat/Republic racket in D.C., which will in fact send those head bipartisan honchos to Pyongyang to grovel and prostrate before Kim Jong il, and s*ck if necessary; Kim knows it, they know it. It is only a matter of time. I believe the Choson Ilbo rumors. He is jacking the USA and the world around like nothing I have ever seen, call it bold face emboldenment, but can you blame him? He knows the West caves time and time again. We should have sealed up his bunkers with J-DAMS when we had a chance in 2003 when he went underground for two months out of fear, up near Mt. Paektu.

Now I’m seeing an estimate from Japan of 5.3 Richter, which implies Hiroshima size and Russian military are claiming 20 kt yield which would imply about Richter 5.5. It generally takes awhile for the geologists to run all the data and give a final verdict on the size of quakes. I suppose we should give them at least as much time to refine their calculations as it will take to launder all the shorts in japan and Seoul, and to reboot the Teleprompter in DC.

You're welcome, AmericanInTokyo. My prayers continue.

Your concern is not dramatic, it is most understandable, particularly in light of your current residence. This is a grave situation with, as of yet, an unknown outcome.

I don’t think O’s smart enough to soil himself over this. Probably fails to see the significance. The short range missile launch was certainly an in your face follow up, and I don’t see that we have even officially mentioned it yet.

I wonder who the real audience for this was supposed to be. I would say Iran, but they have missiles that are capable of far longer range. Either way, looks like the catalog is open for business, and the Memorial Day sale has been announced.
