Smoking causes gene damage in minutes

Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released Saturday.

In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.

The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.~snip

"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.

It's not addictive, it's a habit. Nothing more.

If you say so...

Oh nail in my coffin,
So pale and so thin,
Why do I keep constantly,
Driving you in?

You say that you’ll kill me,
Well what do you bet?
When I finish this last cigarette.

You can quit any habit any day you want to,
and you won’t quit till that day comes.

We “boomers”, children of the Greatest Generation, lived with parents who smoked like freight trains. They cooked fat laden, delicious meals and we ate them without a thought as to the “damage” they might do. We rode around in cars that belched toxic fumes into their interiors, without seat belts, with our younger siblings sitting on our laps. We drank soft drinks made with real sugar and ate all the Twinkies we could get.
We figured out what to do and not to do with things by ourselves without “dummie warnings” on everything we bought. When we became adults, we mostly followed the same lifestyles.

No one says that smoking is good for anyone. We know it isn’t. Neither is a fast food diet. But choices belong to people, not governments. Everyone has the right to live free of cigarette smoke if it bothers them. By the same token, anyone who wants to smoke, in spite of the known dangers should be able to do so, just like anyone who wants to eat fatty food should be able to without being made to feel inferior.

If you want to outlaw every substance that has a chance of shortening your life, stay away from the pharmacy. Have you listened to any advertisements for prescription drugs lately? If there’s anything I’ve learned in a pretty long life, it’s this: No one gets out of it alive, regardless of what they do or don’t do.

I smoked for many years before I quit. I quit because I realized it made me stink and I could do something much more enjoyable with the money it cost. Quitting also made me feel better, but I didn’t quit to live longer or for fear of DNA damage and neither will anyone else.

Showing that suffering old man’s picture above is the kind of scare propoganda I hate. You would think the poor soul killed himself on purpose. DNA damage my putootie! If that were true, most of the boomers would have two heads and an extra set of eyes.

I think it was the late Milton Berle who said “If you quit smoking, drinking, gambling, playing cards and sex, you won’t live forever.....it’ll just seem like it.”

Why, when you are hospitalized, are you given a polka-dotted clown outfit to wear, like the one the guy in the photo has on? Has some idiot done research as to the demonstrated therapeutic effect of dressing an adult like a baby girl? Another insult—in the medical profession, as a patient, you are never addressed by anything other than your first-name. No last name. No “Mr.” or “Mrs.”, no “Sir” or “Ma’am”. No respect.

Somebody said "Getting up in the morning will kill you". LOL

There are so many people, 2 famous ones, that have died of lung cancer and never smoked, and were fanatical about 2nd hand smoke, that linking all lung cancer with smoking is ridiculous.

If you say so...

Let's put it this way, I had no withdrawal symptoms. I sure did when I went off prescription pain meds.

If you want to talk about addiction please know what you're talking about.

Holy crap dude!!!!
You said this..

“I’ve seen it’s effects for myself and don’t need a plethora of medical studies to know it is bad for you.”

Right after you said..

Instead you’ll get the anomalies thrown at you like, “My grandfather smoked every day of his life and lived to be 100.”

Anomaly much?

That's what happens when emotion rather than common sense is the driving influence.

Anecdotal info is still anecdotal no matter who gives it.

I simply can’t stand the willful ignorance by many on FR with regard to smoking and second-hand smoke.

Do you use a cell phone? There are studies that say the radiation in cell phones is the cause of a rise in tumor related illnesses. How many willfully ignorant people are using cell phones?

By this statement, you have scrapped any credibility you might have had.

And of course, scienists are never wrong. Ask Al Gore.

Millions of conservatives have including myself, have marched into voting booths

That's another one of your lies Drango......Most of the anti-smoking laws across this country were passed by legislators without consent of the citizens, including my state of Michigan.

The few laws that were passed via local voting laws were based on a majority of the voters who voted. The sad fact about that statistic is that only approximately 47 percent of the registered voters in those communities voted and most of the decisions in favor of the bans accumulated only about 54 percent of the vote.

Why is this significant? Because the bans that were passed by the voters only represented approx. 27 percent of the citizens in those respective communities.

In other words, 73 percent of the individuals in those communities had no problem with smokers but the minority were able to get their way simply because they voted. That's what's called "Tyranny by the minority".........

I’d like to see this compared with other hazards that are “naturally” occurring — such as being out in the sunshine or eating celery with its psoralens. The human body ordinarily has a great capacity for shrugging off minor cellular damage — the damaged cells simply die the vast majority of the time. The odds can be pushed through habitual damage, of course.

By the way who said any smoking Freeper (and I have never smoked in my life) wants to encourage the chillrun to follow in that habit? Especially before they are adults and know well enough to make responsible choices?
