In-N-Out Burgers vs. Five Guys
Me | 4/8/11 | Oh, the huge vanity

Posted on 04/08/2011 9:32:29 PM PDT by Mike Darancette

5 guys just moved into town which is better In-N-Out Burgers or Five Guys?

From what I hear 5 Guys is better but for fries, shakes, burger taste and prices. What say you all.

I’ve always liked In-N-Out, but sorry, Five Guys is better. I still eat both depending on where I am.

Everything else is, but In-N-Out fries are not good. You actually can’t make good fries just by slicing a potato and dropping it into a fryer. That’s all they do.

Not that I could do. Nothing better than fresh ground steak burgers. I usually do that at home.

Not a chain eatery but Keller’s on NW Hwy in Dallas made the best burgers. Burgers and beer at Keller’s thats something I will well remember! The Prince of Hamburgers was not too bad either but its long gone now. Loved the old drive-ins of yesteryear.

We have Steak & Shake and White Castle in this area but Ive never been too impressed with their food. A White Castle burger is also called a “fartburger”, endearingly so by the people that like that sort of sandwhich.

I will have to check 5 Guys out since one opened near here recently.

As a bonus, you may see some of the Microsoft crew there. Bill Gates used to go there, don't know if he still goes.

Either way, with In N out it’s fresh fries because you see them peeling the potato/s and grabbing the meat from the fridge...not frisbee patties like McD’s.

Same as 5 Guys.

The tacos that Jack makes are deep fried with American cheese, they frankly don’t taste like tacos to me yet are surprisingly good.

I think they will kill my heart though, so I don’t eat them anymore.

Agreed. One of the best things on the menu. And two for only 99 cents!

But eat all you want. It's a myth that eating fried food will harm your heart.

True, it is the calories you pack on because of all the oil socked into a corn tortilla.

Red Robin is expensive here, although a decent Margarita mitigates that.

I went to college in Canada. We made fun of Harvey’s the way Australians make fun of Fosters.

Moderation in all things. I haven't had them in a couple of years but guess if I could get them all of the time they wouldn't be that good.

My current favorite is Cheeburger Cheeburger. Good burgers, great frings (fries and onion rings ), and the best shakes ever. Check out this odd locations map;

http://www.cheeburger.com/locations.asp

One of my other favorites is Krystal burgers, sadly about the same distance away from me as Jack In The Box.

In-n-Out was never a franchise. Maybe that has changed but as of a few years ago it was 100% company-family owned for decades. They grew at a regular pace and mostly in California and the West but they have been around since at least the 1950’s though they grew slowly for the first 25 years.

The In-n-Out family have a very sad history. The father/founder died at age 67 with 18 restaurants in the late 1970s. The eldsest son took over at age 24 and expanded it to almost 100 stores, but he died in a plane crash at age 40 or so in the early 1990s. The other son took over, but then he died a few years later from drug overdose. The wife of the founder took over, surviving the death of her 2 sons, and ran it for another 10 years. Upon her death it went into trust for the only surviving family member. Her granddaughter - the daughter of the son who died of an overdose - will have complete control of the company by the time she is 36. They have 256 Restaurants and probably (my guess) have revenues of around $500 million a year... maybe more. Nice inheritance.

Oh, there are references to Bible Passages on all their packaging - cups, wrappers, napkins and trays.

In and Out ALL THE WAY!!! Never a quality problem there.

Went to 5 Guys in the Northeast, good food...quite expensive though. Then they came to the Houston area. Got all excited and went to one. THEIR PEANUTS WERE SOGGY. I looked on their boxes, and the peanuts they had out were a couple of months old. Here in Texas, the humidity will (and did) destroy them. I told the boss there - he didn’t seem to care too much. Probably figures he’ll go through less of them that way and make a few bucks more. A new 5 Guys will open near me soon - I plan to get there before their peanuts get stale.
