The power of Palin: Don't count out the snowbilly from Alaska
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | July 3, 2011 | Jack Kelly

Posted on 07/03/2011 11:06:27 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Bristol Palin told Fox News her mother has made up her mind about running for president, but Sarah Palin told The New York Times she's still thinking about it.

According to the conventional wisdom, it may be too late for her to run. Ms. Palin's done no fundraising, hasn't built a campaign team. Republicans who supported her are drifting to active campaigns, chiefly that of Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

The conventional wisdom is more conventional than wise. Candidates start early to build name recognition and need a campaign organization to get supporters to the polls.

Sarah Palin has 3.2 million followers on Facebook -- about 800,000 more than all the declared GOP candidates combined. Palinistas tend to be the sort who would crawl over ground glass to vote for her. She has less need of a get-out-the-vote operation than any political figure in modern times.

The Republican National Committee's new rules favor late entrants. There will be more delegates in 2012 than ever before. A higher proportion will come from heavily Republican states. All but a handful will be selected after March 1. In the four February contests, 129 delegates are at stake -- 23 fewer than in Texas alone.

Delegates in the early states must be selected by proportional representation, the RNC says. So whoever wins these contests probably will wind up with fewer than half. After March 1, delegates may be selected on a winner-take-all basis.

The early contests are unlikely to produce a clear frontrunner, but will winnow the field. This is most important for debates. It's stretching the term when seven or eight candidates are on stage. Cut the field to three or four, and debates have real meaning....

Who would be surprised at her current numbers after being attacked for three years?

How many times must conventional wisdom be destroyed before people begin to ignore it?

"Ms. Palin's done no fundraising,"

She doesn't need to. We are all holding our bucks until she gives us the word GO!

Also, it’s not quite accurate that she is doing no fund-raising. I’ve gotten a couple of letters from SarahPac, presumably because one of the conservative or pro-life causes I donate to gave her people my mailing address.

Of course, SarahPac could just be raising money to support other candidates or whatever. Or it could be for her coming use.

He scoffs at it himself (as it relates to Gov. Palin) in the editorial.

Only the truly ignorant underestimate Sarah Palin (i didn’t say they are unintelligent) but ignorant of the facts on how time and time again she has overcome people more powerful than her, she knows whats she’s doing and her unconventional ways appears to confuse her adversaries and keep them unbalance everytime.

She’s not a hillbilly. I would ask if there is nothing too low for them to throw at her, but we all know there isn’t.

"Candidates start early to build name recognition and need a campaign organization to get supporters to the polls."

Sarah already has that. Why should she start so early(which she has, duh) when she can get things done BEFORE she announces....without them harping on her about the "rules and regulations"?

Sarah is one smart cookie. I CANNOT wait to vote for her in 2012.....nor the debates between her and barry. I would NOT be surprised if barry walks off the stage at one of their debates.

You are dead on accurate .... We have a couple of the plastic carboy water jugs we fill with coins between elections. We donate that to Sarah when shé starts her campaign.

Change WE believe in.

Sarah 2012 !

"It may be too late for her to run"

Compared to WHAT!?! We don't need 2 year long presidential campaigns.

Sarah could wait until like February of next year and would still be fine.

OH yeah, and Sarah is NOT a hillbilly, She's a Hunter!

OMG, I'm doing the "Sarah bag of coins" as well!

"Change WE believe in."

Literal change, both literal and metaphorically.

Not too many times, I would say. I recall Fred Thompson falling on his face 3 years ago — people said it was because he waited too long to get into the race. (not just pundits but local observers too). However if Palin gets in late and wins, then next time out, those very same people who said Thompson waited too long will say that you can get in late and still win.

Ditto for me, my wife and my sister. As well as about a dozen "Palin for Prez" Tea Party pals of ours in this Central Massachusetts burg. And if I personally know that many in one town in Massachusetts, try to imagine how many of us there are across this great land.

It's all over but the announcement. Then it's go time.

She should wait until October of 2012 to announce. Considering her name recognition and popularity, she’d win and say “I’ve already saved the American people tens of millions of dollars, and I don’t owe a dime to anyone.”
