New England Fishermen Freak Out After The Government Closes The Bay Of Maine For Two Months
Business Insider ^ | 4/29/12 | ap

BOSTON (AP) — Fisherman Lou Williams sees plenty of harbor porpoises, usually swimming in small pods well away from his boat, unlike the herds of lookalike dolphins that get close enough to ride his vessel's wake.

A place Williams doesn't see many porpoises is his nets.

"It's a rare occasion," said Williams, 55, who fishes out of Gloucester. "I don't think more than a couple this year."

But federal regulators say far too many porpoises in the Gulf of Maine are drowning in fishing gear, specifically the stationary nets that Williams and other fishermen use, called gillnets.

The estimated fatalities are so high, they triggered a provision in federal rules that will close a busy fishing ground that extends from Gloucester to southern Maine to gillnets for two months annually, starting this Oct. 1.

NOAA, right? National Oceans & Atmospheric Administration?

In Santa Cruz Calif NOAA is handing out $2500 tickets to anyone using a jet-ski to rescue someone who is starting to drown in surf.

Sounds made up? They’ve done it a bunch of times.

They say the jet-skis are a danger to otters.

In 20-foot waves? REALLY?

But to keep the population healthy, the Marine Mammal Protection Act allows only a certain number of porpoises to be accidentally caught and killed annually.
Right now, the annual nationwide limit is 703, and the law requires regulators to bring the average down to a tenth of that, about 70 deaths annually, said David Gouveia, the marine mammal program coordinator the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Northeast office.
But federal researchers say 883 porpoises were snared on average annually between 2005 and 2009, the most recent years numbers are

“Nice work, Obamsky. Let’s see if the fisherman and their families remember you at election time.”

Won’t matter if all the fisherman vote against Zero. Maine and Mass will be solidly in Zero’s corner.

“As bad as I feel for the fishermen, I can’t help but notice that the timing is *perfect* for the GOP...”

I (unfortunately) completely agree. WTH are they thinking? I suppose some of the economic damage will be mitigated by the fact that the ban won't be hitting during the summer tourist season. OTOH, the “leaf peepers” eat too. And they're going to want seafood, not KFC.

This could very well be the event that sets into motion the election scenarios you laid out, AuH2ORepublican.

” Anybody got a list going on all the jobs and SPECIFIC JOB INDUSTRIES Obama has deliberately taking away from “Middle Class” Americans...

Here’s the start if one hasnt been started:

SPACE PROGRAM CUT 1,000s jobs lost
PIPELINE PROJECT VETOED 10,000s of jobs NOT given to US
FISHING in MAINE
ENVIRONMENTAL RULES COST 1000s in Louisiana after BP incident

He tried to destroy the family farm too....but the backlash was profound, so he backed off.

Still, the fools vote 'rat.

Had a long talk with some supposed big-shot among them once. Couldn't quite figure out where he was coming from on anything. Sort of a cross between Paul Bunyan and Albert Schweitzer.

Shutting them down one month before the election. They’re out of work which will hurt their families and the local economy. Maine seafood prices will soar, hurting everyone.

Brilliant nobama. More! More!

observers found pingers working properly on only 41 percent of observed hauls

If this were really about saving porpoises then the fishermen with properly functioning "pingers" would still be allowed to fish. This smells of some other agenda.

I’ve been leaf-peeping around NH’s White Mountains on more than one October (my wife and I felt like the only tourists under 50, but we didn’t mind), and one of the best things about it was the fresh seafood brought in from Portsmouth all the way to the western edge of the Kancamaugus (sp?) Highway: fish chowder, am strips, lobster rolls ... my mouth is watering already. So you’re right, Obama’s fishing ban will affect not just Portsmouth and coastal Maine, but inland areas as well.

He tried to destroy the family farm too....but the backlash was profound, so he backed off.

I don't think is is so much the prohibition, I believe the real point here is they are camouflaging going after the rural and farm kids he can not reach any other way through mandatory "Safety training."

The reg started like this...

“The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.”

...90-hour federal government training course....

And revoke the safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA?

WHY? There is nothing wrong with it.

Anyone care to guess what the 90 hours of “federal government training” will contain?

THEN they claim they are not going to do it.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2877162/posts

Which is a lie as they come back with this the very next day...

"Instead, the Departments of Labor and Agriculture will work with rural stakeholders – such as the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Farmers Union, the Future Farmers of America, and 4-H – to develop an educational program to reduce accidents to young workers and promote safer agricultural working practices."

Bingo.

This is exactly what I posted about the real intent of the "rule." They are trying to access the rural kids under the guise of a "safety training program" for distribution of indoctrination propaganda.

My previous post...

Again, anyone care to guess what the 90 hours of “federal government training” will contain?

Perhaps something along the lines of what is in this?

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," he said Wednesday. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

In that >>> EXACT <<< same PUBLIC statement he said he would make federal assistance conditional on school districts establishing service programs and set the goal of 50 hours of mandatory service a year for middle school and high school students.

...90-hour federal government training course.... 4-H and FFA

Just as he was three years ago, he is attempting mandatory control of the kids. Only now the monster is going after the rural and farm kids he can not reach any other way.

With the power grab at family farms, he wanted to make himself the all powerful, all knowing fed-gov the ultimate authority, placing himself above the parents.

Unbelievable. The HAZMAT Tech course I took to go out and deal with and clean up methyl-ethyl-death in a level A suit was only 80 hrs.

This is for stuff that could me and thousands of others if things go wrong.

I took quite a few of those myself.

My favorite was Rad. MUCH easer/safer than Chem. Easy to detect, easy to protect.

The most fun was "Air Monitoring at Hazardous Material Sites." It was put on by EPA itself back before EPA drank ALL of the KoolAid.

Lots of egg-pensive toys...

I wish I could remember the FReeper here who claims dolphins are endowed with exceptional intlelligence. I'd ask him why they haven't figured out a way to avoid those nets....again.

Seems like the Radiological officer, tech, and instructor courses were just 40 hrs each. It has been too many years.

Most of the memories from those were as a result of the powers that be calling every motel in the area and picking the one we stayed at based solely on price.

Asking for another room because the first one smelled of rotting flesh.

Coming out in the morning to thousands of broken beer bottles in the parking lot.

Half of the complex taped off with city condemnation posters nailed to the doors.

Being able to tell what people were wearing as they walked by through the gap in the door frame and the mice going through without breaking stride.

Yea, good times.

This is wonderful news, I could never be happier about something like this. New England votes for these fascists year after year to force the rest of us to do what they think is best. Now they have to drink the dirty water themselves....

A very interesting thought!

I would think that the intelligence of the mammals in the ocean could be scared away by a particular underwater sound frequency that they would associate with danger. A cheap transmitter on the nets could do the job!
