Jogger targeted by teens turns out to be Kung Fu expert

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Two teenagers got more than they bargained for when a Washington state woman they attempted to assault turned out to be an expert in martial arts.

KATU reports that Priscilla Dang was jogging in her Vancouver neighborhood last Friday when she was approached by two teenagers on their bikes.

One pulled in front of her as the other groped her from behind.

Fortunately for Dang she had studied Kung Fu for 18 years at a martial arts school owned by her family. She used the training to teach her attacker some manners.

"I grabbed him and said, 'You need to apologize, and he did,'" said Dang.

Then things escalated when the second teen started swearing at her.

Dang said that something snapped inside her and that is when her Kung Fu background really kicked in as she punched him twice in the face.

"He started coming in for a few, and I was lucky enough to dodge his shots. I came up for another one and I got him good, and I think that upset him," she told the news station.

“My daughter is taking her test for her karate black belt this afternoon”

Congratulations!! You must be so proud! That’s a lot of hard work and, as you know, is only the beginning. Blackbelt means you’ve learned the basics. She has the rest of her life to practice and refine her skills.

My daughter is working on her 2nd degree for September. We started her in karate for the same reasons you did and it turned out she loved it.

I like these threads because it brings out all the gun braggarts and big talking second-guessers who puff up their feathers tell us how much better THEY would’ve handled the situation. It must be hard on some egos to get showed up by a GIRL!

The woman is alive and unharmed thanks to her skills and diciplined mind. She used the correct amount of force to end the confrontation just like you are taught. Woulda, coulda, shoulda is just talk.

I had a brown belt in karate at one time and all those sparring sessions over the years only convinced me that martial arts skills aren’t going to save your butt in a real street fight.

I knew only one guy who really knew how to fight with martial arts, he used to bring me all the brown and black belts that he would run into and have them spar with me (I don't do martial arts) over and over what I heard from them after their systems fell apart within about 10 to 30 seconds were things like, "well, you aren't doing it right" or, in class we..., it seemed to me that they were taught to do Karate dancing, and to fight at arm and leg distance. Closing on them and taking them out instantly worked every time (except with my friend, he could truly fight under any conditions and he concentrated on dealing only fatal or disabling blows, he never 'danced' and paraded).

Reminds me of the story of some young men who tried to mug an old man in Central Park back in the early 70s or late 60s. They found out the hard way that the old man was Jack Dempsey who wasn’t in a merciful state of mind.

Might be a good idea for this jogger to keep her mouth shut lest some zealot DA go after her for assault and battery. I bet if this happened in the UK, she’d be arrested.

A petite woman jogging alone. Bad idea.

I do not accept your premise.

A woman should be able to jog down the street in her own neighborhood. Shame on us for allowing thugs to roam the streets and telling law-abiding people to stay in their homes for their own safety.

I do not wish to live in such a world.

We need to enforce the laws we already have on the books and lock these punks up. We also need to bring hard labor back to our prisons. None of that sitting around and watching TV all day in the rec room. Make them bust rocks all day long until they are so tired they collapse into their cells at night. I guarantee they will not want to return to prison after that and when they get out, they will allow women to jog down the streets unmolested.

Indeed.
I was going to mention the strength disparity, but didn’t want to make it seem like I was “overstating” the achievement.

“One hopes that you (or a qualified instructor) is also teaching her to shoot.”

Excellent point. It’s sad, but important for our daughters to be able to handle a firearm as well. But, the fact is, you’re not always going to have access to a firearm.

Get her to watch Linda Hamilton in Terminator 3 when she is escaping the hospital. Hamilton is perhaps the only realistic female warrior type of all of them.

Linda trains constantly, she lives only among men who are immersed in the man world everyday and she learns from them, and she fights like a trained woman.

I love how she fights her way out of the hospital, all of it is realistic, she doesn't punch her way out, she fights, weaves, and flees, all within the limits of her size and strength with escape being the goal.

Something this Karate trained/runner, on a run no less should have done, she should have been fighting to escape, not throwing punches until one of them pulled a knife and forced her to backoff.

Good point. Boring your attacker to death is also an effective tactic.

"But, the fact is, you’re not always going to have access to a firearm."

Concur. But I would want her to have all the possible options, including training, and a nice little handgun birthday present and CCW when she "came of age". Women have been largely brought up on the meme that "good girls don't do guns". I wouldn't want any female be saddled with such a mistaken notion.

“Get her to watch Linda Hamilton in Terminator 3...”

Movie violence can be fun to watch sometimes, especially when the actors know what they are doing. However, it seems like comparing an idealized movie action sequence to real life is a little silly. Linda got as many takes as she needed to appear perfectly bad ass. Our victim had one SURPRISE take for all the marbles.

There is a difference between exhibition/competition and real fighting. A good instructor teaches both.

Hmm, not a good idea to be showing what’s in her garage. Now the little thugs know she has some sellables.

Your daughter needs to learn that she is studying how to protect herself and escape, she is not learning what men learn, how to go into a bar and defeat hardened fighters and criminal types.

If your daughter thinks that she can out fight men in a face to face fight after her karate classes, then she is in trouble. If she expects to be standing over vanquished opponents as they lay defeated on the ground then she will be in trouble, many bad guys are excellent fighters and bigger and stronger than her, many of them are the toughest guys in the county jails and lock-ups.

The female in this article did not exactly take “all the marbles” she was too much trouble for two teen muggers with witnesses, and cell phones involved, but after 18 years of studying martial arts in the family owned business it was hardly the fight of legends.

Tis not in the UK. However it is in the “Liberal Peoples Republic of Washington”.

She would be quite welcome and safe here in Texas.

Obama's sons?

That means that the victims were African-American and the bigot was stalking the children and tried to kill them -- NBC has their employees on the way, stay tuned . . . .

Never produce a gun unless you intend to use it.

Many many years ago when I was in college, I lost a room mate mid semester. Could not afford the rent without a room mate so I found an unknown quantity in the same shape. He agreed to pay the other half of the rent. It was fine until one weekend he and 2 of his drunk cowboy friends came into the apartment and poured beer on me and threatened me. I found an opening, stepped into the closet and put 20 ga. shells in my shotgun. When the breech closed, you would have thought a covey of quail flushed. I did not have to use the gun, but never saw the cowboys again. The “room mate” did not share the apartment long.

There was only 1 other time in my life that I had to produce a weapon. Did not have to fire either time, but avoided possible injury to me. 2nd time was a more direct threat. Both ended well.
