For an longtime Kansas Republican in trouble, there's no place like home.
Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is facing a Tea Party primary challenge to his reelection this year from Dr. Milton Wolf -- a distant cousin of President Barack Obama.
Roberts was first elected to Congress in 1980, and was elected to the Senate in 1996. Now, though, the New York Times reports he's struggling to renew ties to the state as he battles to keep his job.
Roberts doesn't live in Kansas; instead, when he's there, he stays at the country club home of Phyllis and Cecil Ross, who have donated to his campaigns in the past. He lists their address on his voter registration.
The Times quotes Roberts as joking: "I have full access to the recliner."
Roberts does own property in Dodge City, Kan., and pays property taxes on it -- but he rents it out to tenants. He and his wife live in Alexandria, Va.
"He owns a residence in Dodge City, Kansas, that currently has tenants so he also rents a place to stay in Dodge City, Kansas, when he travels there," spokeswoman Sarah Little said Friday.
Little confirmed that Roberts pays rent from the donor couple, who own a home on Club View Drive in Dodge City.
Of the Times' piece, she said: "The story is misleading and ridiculous."
In a separate memo to media, Little called the New York Times report a "hit piece."
"The story is so slanted and so far from the truth that Kansans will not take it seriously," she said. "They know better."
Too many Senators who are too old. The Catholic Church has a rule that requires bishops to offer their resignation from their sees at age 75. The same rule might well apply to Senators and federal judges.
confirmed with what? a Form 1099 sent to the people Roberts rents from? the tax return from the couple showing their rental income from Roberts?
Arrogant POS.
Ouch. That's going to leave a mark.
Are you elected to represent any of those other states?
The problem with Lugar was that he seemed to be voting with and representing those in DC , where he lived full time, instead of the Hoosiers that elected him
How many of those execs are dependent on the voters to keep their job?
He’s a Rat. Different standards apply.
Absentee lord.
What's the over under on that bet?
I think that Roberts should go, but you must remember that he is one of the few who stood with Sen. Cruz on the filibuster. Bob
“Too many Senators who are too old. “
Yes, too old, and even more importantly, been there too long.
“Ron Wyden (D-OR) lives in New York. He visits Oregon every now and then.”
My guess is that the all consider themselves “citizens of Washington DC.”
The go home to bull$hit their brain dead constituents as little as possible, because it interrupts their lives as brahmans.
“Stupid story. You can claim residency wherever you want.”
Complete BS. Yes, you can claim residency wherever you want but if you claim to represent a district in which you don’t reside that’s fraud, pure and simple.
I’d be interested to know exactly how many “representatives” actually live in the districts they claim to represent. These people are just opportunist con artists.
No no. That is not acceptable for an elected official. He’s in DeeCee to supposedly represent his state, and that means at least talking to people there. It’s terrible PR to not have a residence there. Not required, as Lugar proved for years, but one should.
Even Juan McQueeg has a “compound” in AZ. He’s been known to drop by once in a while.
My favorite sinecure is the one Sheila Jackson Lee has. She lives 1 1/2 blocks from her office (a 5-minute walk), and takes a limo (closing the streets) both ways, every day she “works.” Now that’s sweet. Nobody in Houston gives a rat’s patootie if she has a home there, because she’s a Democrat.
Dick Gephardt says hello!
US Constitution, Article I, Section 3:
No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.
Mark Levin is hitting this jerk hard. Roberts represents the interests of his home - Washington D.C.
Pat Roberts is all right, as far as I know.
Suddenly NBC is interested in finding corrupt politicians, and lo and behold they’re all Republicans.
Bob Costas gets on his knees for an interview with Obama tonight before the Olympics.
NBC: National Barack Channel.
Good grief! He’s only been in Washington DC for 34 years! How could anyone think he is out of touch with Kansas?! Or life?
< / sarc >
Sigh. Of course, I’m still stuck with John McCain (32 years) and his buttboy, Jeff McFlake...14 months but votes like he’s been there for 34 years!
A fitting successor to Packwood—who pulled more funding from NY than from OR.
