Celebrities' SAT scores revealed amid controversy over regrading
UIK Daily Mail ^ | March 7, 2014 | DAILY MAIL REPORTER

As controversy grows over the regrading of SAT examinations, thousands of people have started sharing their own scores on social networks to put future generations at ease.

Well-known figures have been conspicuously quiet about their results, however, but with the likes of Ke$ha, James Woods and Natalie Portman reportedly getting close to a perfect 1600, perhaps they felt they'd only add pressure rather than ease it.

Famous faces with far lower SAT scores include Bill Cosby, who got a score lower than 500, Sopranos actress Drea De Matteo, believed to have scored around 800, and even former US President Bill Clinton, whose 1020 puts him a few hundred points below successor George W Bush...

...except I keep getting mental blocks and can’t remember words.

You know why? It's because we are all expected these days to remember 400 different usernames and passwords for every stinking aspect of our lives that are now completely dependent upon being "secure" online.

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out.

"I didn’t even take the SAT, I did take the ACT. I did fairly well on the that."

I didn't take either. I took the ASVAB and even though my bum knee disqualified me from the service (couldn't pass the physical) Recruiters from all branches of the service called on me for almost three years.

They told me I scored in the top 5% of Category 1 my buddy who took the test at the same time scored in the top 1% and ended up a NASA certified electronics tech.

—Did you study/prep for it at all

Nope, just took the test,
like it was no different than any other test...

Rhodes’ legacy specified four standards by which applicants were to be judged:

Literary and scholastic attainments;
Energy to use one’s talents to the fullest, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
Moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.

I’d say Clinton fails on all 4 premises....

After reading that list it did seem sort of odd that a person who was just about the opposite of what they say they want should be given the scholarship.

Not only did he not meet the requirements he was in the extreme in not meeting them.

The old tests ran 200 to 800 in each category so the possible totals were 400 to 1600.

Bill Cosby may have scored lower than 500, but he's Dr. Bill Cosby--he earned a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts. I read something once by someone who was involved in Cosby's getting the degree--he taught at that university. He met Cosby only once, as I recall...his dissertation was about Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, if I remember correctly.

Ole BJ went to Georgetown for undergrad (which is in DC).

He was an intern for Senator Fulbright of Arkansas who was a Georgetown grad and a Rhodes Scholar.

I’m sure that was his Rhodes connection.

Obama got 1600 for just showing up. Just like everything else he’s gotten.

I am just going on what I saw on TV but I don’t think Cosby did anything for his doctorate. It was sort of an Obama like degree.

I used to really like Cosby’s stories and Fat Albert too. The older he gets and the more I learn about him, the less I like him.

I don't recall if it encompassed Bill's time there but there was a point where the Ed Dept at UMass was embroiled in a scandal for running a diploma mill, just cranking degrees out so union teachers could get salary bumps.

Buried near the bottom of the article

It wasn't buried at all. You won't see it mentioned in the American press.

It was close to 20 years ago when I read about this, but as I recall the author was not a regular member of the Education school but taught some courses for them as an adjunct, and had a pretty negative view of what goes on in Education programs—I think he thought that Cosby’s case wasn’t as bad as some of the others he was aware of.

I took the SAT and ACT in 1969 in the fall, so it was pre- anything changing or adjusting.

Verbal 745, Math 782 for 1527.

I also took the separate “Achievement Tests” with a Math 769, and Physics 784.

On ACT my composite was 31, not so bad, but I really nailed the Natural Science test for a 35 - the third dash mark above 99.9%ile... :-)

I did no prep for any of these tests. The main thing I did do though was read while growing up. A lot, as soon as I COULD read.

I read every single science fiction book in our parish (county) library in the card catalog, front to back. Also lots of nature/adventure books (Jim Kjelgaard for example), and also my high school English and American lit reading lists - not just what was assigned, and not everything, but more than half of each list.

Reading is the thing kids these days miss out on that I believe really develops so many mental abilities.

AND let’s not even bring up spelling, or the ability to compose and write intelligible sentences or paragraphs, let alone reports and papers.

Youngster’s access to computers and the net is definitely a double-edged sword if not restricted.

And home-schooling can certainly be better than almost all public schools, given how much negative impact the public schools can have now.

I had a very conservative prof when I returned to Troy. He was a great guy who was married to a hot airline stewardess.

The one man I recall him mentioning several times with obvious distaste was William Fullbright. I mean he really, really, disliked Fullbright.

I never did find out exactly why tho.

SAT scores mean nothing as far as what you will achieve in life. That has more to do with guts, attitude, determination, and perhaps a little luck.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Ke$ha, inexplicable to me up to now because it’s the sort of music and performance art that I usually dislike. But, the performances and music videos are much more wry and literate than they would appear at first glance, and the lyrics are actually clever in a way that speaks of intelligence. I guess it’s like the Disney and Looney Tunes cartoons of old, they worked on numerous levels, with in-jokes and buried little gems that only people of a certain age or intelligence would “get.” She’s no dummy, I suspect she’s actually spoofing most of the things that her audiences find appealing about her.
