Get Ready For One Of The Worst El Niños Ever

Eric Holthaus
April 22, 2014, 11:52 AM

With apologies to Game of Thrones fans, there’s a new climate menace on the prowl: El Niño is coming.

New data released late last week added to the mounting evidence.

To be declared an official El Niño, surface water temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean must warm by half a degree Celsius averaged over three months and maintain that level for five consecutive three-month periods. That’s an arbitrary definition, sure, but it gives us the ability to crunch the numbers on weather patterns that tend to associate with El Niños on a global scale.

Statistically, this time of year has the least predictability at any time all year. But peering below the ocean’s surface, water temperatures are already off-the-charts-hot. If that warm water makes it to the surface, the planet could be in line for one of the most intense El Niños ever recorded.

That would be enough to shift weather patterns worldwide and make the next couple of years among the hottest we’ve ever known. Earlier this month I wrote that taking into account current forecasts, El Niño could be the biggest global weather story of 2014. The new data shows that forecast is still on track. And that means El Niño could officially begin in a matter of weeks.

Recently people have been tweeting me questions like: “Will El Niño destroy my family’s avocado plantation in Sweden?” or “Will El Niño finally banish the Eye of Sauron from the drought-stricken Mordor formerly known as Sacramento?”

While the answer to both of those questions is a qualified no, there are some parts of the world that have a relatively predictable weather signal when El Niño rolls around.

This is based on sunspots or the lack of them. Not looking good for the Man-made Global Warming Crowd.

In 1311 thru 1317 the rain fell and people starved, the crops died in the fields and the people ate the seed and the population sickened and died.

Then came the Black Plague around 1345 and a weakened population died like flies. On top of that the little ice age developed, probably started by the rotting bodies giving off massive amounts of CO2.

My family in Central England survived both events, so having a genetic memory recall I referred the NH rains as similar to the 1311-1317 event.

I may be guilty of a false analogy but I think not.

Whales don’t have oil, just blubber so one of you is going to have a whale of a loss, the other a whale of a gain.

Wait a minute here; if the rotting corpses were giving off that much CO2 shouldn’t that have ended the Little Ice Age.
Aren’t the Goreistas claiming that CO2 is the worst greenhouse gas ever, after cow farts? Shouldn’t the rotting corpses have caused Gorebal Warming on a massive scale?
Now your just starting to confuse me and that’s not being GREEN you know.

It is climate change damn it, get it right. If it gets hot it is CO2 and if it gets Cold it is CO2.

It is the mix of Chemicals from the rotting bodies that affected the CO2 and opened the ozone hole and caused the Thames to freeze.

Luckily there were enough rib bones available to encourage winter sports and thus build the bodies of the survivors up so they could survive the Gorebull cooling.

Imagine if Queen Mooch was around then, no bread, no eggs, no beef and no mutton, not counting suet pudding a favorite of mine, with hard sauce.

You need eggs for Brioche and a lot of butter, Mooch could have saved the French Royal Family.

Well good luck with that. Already hot in S Texas.

However, this could be okay for us in the West Coast, Southwest, & South. If wikipedia is to be believed (I know), it will be wetter & cooler. It’s not gonna be *that* much wetter *or* cooler. I’ll take it!

Thanks! The Little Ice Age started precipitously with those late cold rains. After centuries of warming climate, ag practices had led to gradually earlier planting, and those rains killed off or rotted the seeds, leading to famine. The Plague hit a number of times, I suspect analogous to the flu now — there have been killer flu epidemics, but we’re used to the flu season now, despite the fact that probably a million or two die worldwide every year from the flu. The Plague was more or less always around beginning in the 14th c, but some of the seasonal yearly outbreaks were more vicious. Shakespeare was born just ahead of a bad outbreak that killed a large part of his hometown, and he managed to not contract it.
