Of course. But, it’s not a moral society. Let’s remove temptation, and make the dole something most people would wish to work to escape.

My opinion only.
The first thing to try to put the brakes on the abuse would be to have the EBT card holder’s picture on his/her card. I watched a big, strong guy pay for half a cart of meat products with an EBT card recently. Nothing unusual about that around here. After he swiped the card he had the cashier punch in the numbers for him as he read them off of a piece of paper he took from his wallet. Card got bounced. He made a phone call. Dictated numbers back to the cashier. Bounced again. Dictated another set of numbers. Card was accepted. FRAUD.

Good answer as are many here. EBT should be emergency foods only! BUT, what has happened is government has stepped into business very deep....SO, of course, grocery stores are making more money selling more goods which makes their bottom lines better and it goes all the way down to the growers who are raking in benefits!!!!

So, just like every other government handout or budget item, it has grown beyond helping the true poor get by for a period into creating a poor class who has middle class livelihood without working.

By the way, goldstategop....ever read where The Bible says that those who don’t work don’t eat?

Personally, I would have qualified for food stamps many times in my life. But, it was shameful for a healthy person to do so. What did I do? Got a part time job at times, cleaned people’s apartments/homes, mowed lawns, helped others out, etc. My family knew my plight and I worked at their homes for meals and a little cash! Today I do not struggle, God’s blessings all, but I also am 30 pounds heavier!!! So, I am rethinking the ability to buy anything I want at the grocery after Lent.

If you don’t want someone telling you that you are living a champagne lifestyle on a beer pocketbook, support yourself.

“merge all welfare into a monthly cash dole and fire 90% of the bureaucrats (without actually cutting benefits) and see how the leftist media whines. Most welfare cost is bureaucracy I hear.”

Ever been to Washington? The Department of Agriculture has TWO buildings. It’s a well-greased racket!

You'll forgive me if I decline to acknowledge your omniscience, especially as you seem intent on denying from afar that which I have personally observed many times. You don't know me and you don't know where have lived or where I have shopped. Moreover, the point is that Milbank, living and working inside the DC Beltway and sticking to his patches of affluence, has almost certainly not seen that which he claims is 'likely' and demands that any action to stop obvious fraud is strictly intended to 'humiliate' the poor. His premise and his conclusion are flawed, either because they do not comport with reality or because he lacks even a rudimentary standard of evidence.

My 'certitude' is based on personal knowledge of the events and circumstances in question, including friends and family members who have, unfortunately, committed some of the acts in question. I did not employ the sort of categoricals ('never') of which you accuse me. I did not I make any mention of Medicaid nor did I exclude legitimate prescriptions from the list of items dispensed from pharmacies.

You may have strong opinions on the subject but those opinions should remain yours i.e. don't put words in my mouth.

As before, my remarks are based on real-life experience. It's understandable that if your personal ox is gored it may cause you to lash out but it doesn't 'reveal' anything about me except that I can transcribe incidents based in reality.

I heard that USDA surplus cheese is better than commercial cheese because they don’t have to follow all the stupid regulations or something.

I wouldn’t know. But I did get my hands on a bunch of USDA surplus potato flakes (basically makes mashed potatoes) which are not too bad.

Well Dana if you want to give your money away for energy drinks and Tostito’s that is your business. I do not want too. Nor do millions of other Americans. You can call me any name you want for that. I call it intelligent.

That is another reason to trim the fat (like 90% of it or more)

I find it interesting that banks are required to report suspicious activity to the government (deposits greater than $10,000, ect) but grocery stores are not required to report possible welfare/food stamp abuse.

All for this. The abuses are rampant. The WIC program is managed by only paying for qualifying nutritionally based products. Why can't EBT be handled the same way? You could grant a broader array of products than WIC, but there's no reason you couldn't limit EBT recipients to purchasing foods with some core nutritional value -- and eliminate the pricey sodas, chips, cookies, and energy drinks.

Want to eliminate the EBT program? Limit the items that recipients can buy, and require mandatory cooking classes to educate recipients on how to prepare tasty nutritional meals within their allotment.

We should get rid of food stamps and EBT altogether and start supplying food, not $. They can use their benefits to”shop” at a food bank or just get a weekly allotment of food delivered. No cash involved.

Yeah, far better to humiliate the middle class by making them suckers, as EBT parasites buy luxury items and trade their points for cash to buy drugs, guns, and hookers. Can’t put any requirements on the leeches or it’s “racism.”

Your prices are high! It isn't usually too hard to find steak for less than $10 per pound.

Not around me, KC metro area. Even 85% lean ground beef pushes five bucks a pound.

Thus, a cart with 50 lbs. of [expensive] steak is plausible.

If they burn up their entire food stamp allotment for the month, yes.

I have a very able bodied son who took the wrong turn in life. He and his baby momma (thank God I have custody of the child) both got EBT, Tanf and all the other alphabet soup the government offers despite both being quite young and able to work. He constantly bragged about being able to buy cigarettes and other non food items with the EBT. Or would ask for more money at the end of the month cause baby momma had spent it all on red bull and cigarettes (no I didn’t give it to him)

The system is totally abused and easy to scam. When I did get custody of my granddaughter, I called the welfare office and told them I had custody of the child so they could cut off the benefits to momma. I was informed that they would not look at it until her six month review was due, she was free to collect benefits for a child she no longer had until then. Assistance should be with then end product (food, clothing etc) and not cash. And if you are able bodied you should have to do some sort of service to get it (pick up trash, stock shelves at the food bank, whatever)
As a taxpayer I am sick to death of being scammed and supporting immoral and often illegal lifestyles because those receiving it have figured out the system and how to live off my hard work.

I tend to lean more toward making sure that only the truly needy get food stamps or any kind of welfare and that it has a sunset clause of say 5 years.

As far as what people buy with the food stamps I’m in favor of personal choices. Beer and cigarettes no but if you want to make a poor choice and blow all your money at the first of the month on steak and lobster and eat beans and rice the rest of the month that’s your business. You cannot micro manage everyone and in a free society you should not try.

30 years ago there was a welfare queen who lived down the street from us. She had steaks on the grill that we could not afford. Her daughter had 3 kids but would not marry baby daddy because that would cut into her benefits. Turned out this woman was collecting food stamps (back then it was food stamps) under at least 3 different names and living quite nicely. The abuse isn’t new, people are just bolder about it.

Do realize their buying steak and lobster on other peoples dime drives the price up so that the people that pay their own way can’t afford it?

Do you realize that’s not true? :-)
