There is a clear warning sign for Donald Trump in a key early state

Donald Trump is still leading a new poll of Iowa Republicans by a comfortable margin.

But as the Republican field begins thinning ever so slightly, the poll provides a warning sign for Trump.

The poll, released Tuesday by Public Policy Polling, shows that Trump is still the front-runner in Iowa, the crucial first-caucus state. Trump captures 24% support among likely Republican voters in the state, compared to 17% who support retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina came in third place with 13% in the poll.

But the survey also shows that Trump is significantly weaker in a key metric: head-to-head matchups.

Trump would lose to Carson in a hypothetical matchup, garnering only 33% to Carson's 60%. Trump would also suffer defeats in the Hawkeye State to Fiorina, and US Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida). The only head-to-head matchup tested in which he would win came against former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a Republican.

Trump, however, has performed well in head-to-head matchups in previous polls nationally. According to a Monmouth survey of likely Republican voters nationwide, released earlier this month, Trump only lost to Carson in a theoretical head-to-head collision.

It's too soon to tell if the PPP numbers indicate legitimate problems for Trump — as many observers note, Trump has defied conventional expectations at every turn. And as PPP reports, Trump is still actually polling better than he was after the first GOP debate, capturing higher favorability ratings among Iowa voters as well.

Is there any poll out there that shows how Trump will do in a head to head match-up against ANY current Democrat candidates?

If FiaRINO was in first place in Iowa, do you think they’d be desperately looking for any crumb of negative news against her?

It’s desperation time at the old corral.

Trump leads in just about every single primary state.

Now there’s negative news for ya.

Carson is a good man, but bores me to tears. He is standing his ground on the Muslim debacle, but, dang - he is so sleepy.

What nuanced thinking. Too bad trump is in first place otherwise he would not have stuff to worry about.

This polling must be why Walker said what he said in his farewell speech. The GOPe has this polling and is trying to pressure candidates to drop out so that they stop cannibalizing each other and can get above Trump’s ceiling.

I still predict Carson wins Iowa. They are hard-wired to go for the most social conservative candidate.

Poll: Trump Leads, Clinton Under 50

A strong performance in last week’s Republican presidential debate has raised former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina’s public profile, but not nearly enough to cut into real estate mogul Donald Trump’s lead over the rest of the GOP field.

Trump takes 32 percent of the vote among self-identified Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, according to a new Morning Consult tracking poll — far ahead of retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson’s 12 percent and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s 11 percent.

Fiorina finishes in fourth position, at 6 percent, just ahead of Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas), who clock in with 5 percent each.

RE: I still predict Carson wins Iowa.

Santorum won Iowa in 2012.

Santorum secured the victory over Romney by a margin of 34 votes with Ron Paul in a strong 3rd.

Which confuses me - the state always goes blue in general elections.

A warning is not an obituary... just that, a warning.

Complete straw argument masturbation since there will be no head to head GOP primary match up.

Romney cruised to a fairly easy nomination with consistent support of around 25% in a wide field but lost most one-on-one match-ups.

It will likely be a wide field until Super Tuesday, at least. The GOPe is just p*$$ed because someone learned how to use their playbook against them.

Because Carson knows nothing of business though he is charitable, I think he could not win IMO.

Trump/Rubio/Bush/Cruz/Fiorina will all be around until Florida guaranteed. That’s a five person race, minimum. Trump at 30% wins going away.
