I don’t mind getting rid of Columbus Day, because really, he didn’t discover America. But PC BS whining that accompanies this makes me want to keep it.

Had the aborigines of what was to become America the political organization and the technology, they would have likewise invaded Europe. Instead they concentrated primarily on warring with, and eating each other.

I do not lament their conquest.

Indigenous peoples in North America, everyone here came from somewhere else, some just sooner than others. Next they’ll be telling me that the indigenous peoples lived in peace and harmony never warring with their brothers, never abused the land and it’s resources, and never ever practiced slavery.

>> Columbus was a total idiot. <<

What makes you say that?
Crediting Columbus with the discovery America may be unfounded but his explorations were recognized as the beginning of the opening up the new world.
In the context of the his age he was a brilliant navigator. Remember in that time just thinking the Earth was round was a radical idea in some circles.

I agree that the liberals celebrating "indigenous people day" are fools. They would not even go out for a Sunday walk with out the latest hiking gear. I would like to see them attempt to cross the Atlantic in the Santa María.

Also, it isn't PC to say it, but a number of smaller tribes in northern Mexico owe their very survival to Columbus and the conquering armies of Cortez who followed.

The Aztec, while the greatest civilization on the continent before Columbus was notoriously cruel and bloodthirsty.

In the 12th and 13th century, their practice of human sacrifice was limited to an occasional choice maiden or young man from their own tribe. By the 14th century, it expanded to include that demographic from other tribes to substitute for their own.

As you can imagine, the other tribes did not take kindly to this practice, so by the 15th century, it expanded to entire villages of men, women and children. Many tribes were wiped out by the Aztec, others faced near extinction. It was only the arrival of the Spaniards and the fall of the Aztec empire early in the 15th century which saved what little was left of them.

Columbus was a total idiot.

Explain-- don't just hit and run away like a democrat without valid facts.

Pardon my Spanish, but WTF? So, the Indians knew all about Spain? They'd been there and back, no biggie?

No, the Indians thought they were the only people in the world, except for their enemies in the next three villages. That's the way it is, when you're Stone Age—Fred Flintstone without the wheel.

Here's how you measure who discovered whom: You go somewhere, you find something, and you make it back and tell folks all about it, so they know it too, and the whole (literate) world gains in knowledge and vision. That's "discovery." Discovery is not Barney Rubble on the beach, digging for clams, looking up, and turning to Fred to say, "Yo, what's that white, square thing on the horizon?"

That's why we say, accurately, that Columbus discovered America.

Darn right. That's why Cortez was able to enlist thousands of Indian tribesmen to help him and his 500 men and 150 horses in taking down Montezuma and the Aztecs.

I think I read that the Aztecs had only been in Mexico City about 75 years when Cortez landed, so memories of the Aztecs' unlovely acquisition and management procedures were quite vivid.

The 16th and 17th century Spanish considered the discovery of the Americas to be the second greatest event in human history. It was second only to the birth, life, death, and resurrection of our savior Jesus Christ. Columbus was no idiot. He was one of the world’s greatest navigators during his day. He made four trips to the New World and back without getting lost or destroyed in a stormy Atlantic. He was not perfect, but he certainly was not stupid, evil, or greedy.

Dishonoring the man who is credited with discovering this continent. Stems from self-loathing.

I wasn’t referring to the Indians. Although it does appear they came from somewhere else. I was referring to Lief Ericson. Also there’s evidence in South America of African settlers before then. And of course there’s the fact that Columbus landed in the Bahamas. He quite simply did NOT discover America.

The NEW WORLD was going to be discovered. If Columbus had not sailed the ocean blue, the NEW WORLD would have still been discovered by Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 AD.

Mexico City was actually founded in 1325, but it may have been the Aztec Capital for only about 75 years.

There is this snippet about the final version of their main religious shrine Templo Mayor, which took place a mere 35 years before the arrival of Cortez:

The sixth temple was built during the reign of Ahuizotl. He finished some of the updates made by Tizoc and made his own; as it's shown on the carvings of the "commemoration stone of the huei teocalli", showing the two tlatoqueh celebrating the opening of the temple during the last day of the month Panquetzaliztli dedicated to Huitzilopochtli; day 7 acatl of the year 8 acatl (Dec 19th, 1487). The Sacred Precinct was walled off and this wall was decorated with serpent heads. He built three shrines and the House of the Eagle Warriors. At the inauguration of this Great Temple, Ahuizotl ordered the sacrifice of many prisoners of war; some 4,000 victims were reportedly sacrificed over a four-day period. Each day blood ran like a river onto the pavement of the Great Plaza, and the stairs of the great pyramid were literally bathed in blood.

Nice people, those Aztecs, eh?

You bet. And there’s plenty of evidence that white man was here before them anyways. Point is, we should all just move on from that already.

“Indians” aren’t indigenous. They are first settlers.
